Well, hullo all! I've returned from long adventures in the wildlands, and have decided to take up shop once again, here in the Shire! Here, you'll find my poetry, which used to be posted in the Shire, in many places, but alas - the archives of most of it disappeared long ago! So, since I happen to have most all of my own archives still available, I shall start posting here, for the newest generation of shirelings to read and enjoy! :nod:

Imagination Unrivalled
~A tribute to the Master Storyteller~
~Tribute to J.R.R. Tolkien~

A mind of genius true, perhaps,
did course within a life so full,
and with a humble start so small,
a tale did grow and ever pulled

the heartstrings of so many folk
who read it once, and then again
as understanding made its way
into the souls of many, then

another tale, and longer, wound
its way into the mind and heart
of that dear dreamer, bolder still,
and so again such lore did start

to weave its birthing pangs along
the path where patience worked with will
to find and make the image grow,
and formed the shapes much larger still

and then became the magic words,
the pictures of a fertile mind
in constant searching out the ways
for which it should then leap and find

that greater still, the perfect work
for which imagination seeks,
as on it went then through the days
and nights of toil, of love, in weeks

and years of conflict, and of doubt
at times of self, but never dire,
as high imagination flew
on silvered wings and ever higher,

and made that tale for which it sought
so long and hard in boldest mind,
and crafted carefully a lore
no other like--his own design.

Frodo’s Lament

An uncle I’ve, quite dear to me
who left for Rivendell
and his possessions he did leave
to me to all keep well.

Amongst the things my uncle left
there was a ring of gold
and on it markings could be seen
in fire’s flames so bold.

Little the knowledge that I had
of such things as that ring
yet found soon it would trouble cause
and my heart did not sing.

Travels just then I had to make
indeed, I had to go
quite soon and leave the Shire so dear
and all I’d come to know.

A few friends dear I took with me
to start out ‘cross the hay,
though not knowing one would go
on with me all the way.

A journey perilous and dark
we found in all the days
of our long travels through the lands -
on evil things we gazed.

Some others fair, they joined with us
to help us in our quest
to overcome the evil blight
then taking o’er the West.

Long we travelled on through the lands
so darkened and so grim
felt we our hearts turn fearful and
our thoughts they ever brimmed.

Then so sadly, we did lose two
it was a fell, dark blow
the one to firey pit so black,
other would water know.

Such fell hardships did we e’er find
and enemies so grim
yet one of slick and cunning mind
got us to follow him.

When finally grim deed was done
upon a mount so fell
a finger, lost to me, it was
yet that made things go well.

In afterdays back in the Shire
amongst the hills so green
when once we’d cleaned up Sharky’s mess
true joy it was then seen.

And yet for me, I could not stay
amid the Shire so bright
so finally ship did I take
and claimed the sweet twilight.

I often wonder in my heart
what would have happened then
when uncle dear he found that ring
he’d giv’n it back again.....

Strong Alliance

A Last Alliance of Elves and Men
gathered on the battlefield,
black and gray, silver gleams,
glinting off of spear and shield.

Thousands now marching rank on rank,
stern and resolute are they;
grave and keen, fair and fell,
ever now their mood is fey.

Elven archers upon the field,
silent, tall and high, Men deem;
armoured Men, axe and sword,
Elves’ companions with them team.

Marching, marching, surely to doom,
smoke and ash now fill the sky;
swiftly comes, darkest dawn,
evil fire does flame on high.

Flying arrows piercing fell throats,
screams of death they travel far;
bloodied Men, fallen lay,
Sauron waits, all life to mar.

Felling blow strikes both Elves and Men,
screaming e’er, the wild wind fey;
almost now, hope is gone,
one deed more yet death’s hand stays.

Wielding a stroke so swift and sure,
Isildur his bane does find;
battle won, ’til later years,
when Gollum the ring will mind....

The Tales and Wisdom of Bilbo Baggins

"It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door..."

The road did sweep you off your feet,
didn't it, Bilbo dear?
Took you places far and wide,
adventures for to find!

The day the Dwarves came to your door,
found it right out, you did--
lane that you walked everyday,
unknown to you it was.

"You step into the road, and if you don't keep your feet..."

Long ways did take you ever on,
just as you thought they might;
longings stirred inside your heart,
so much to your surprise!

Trolls and caves and goblins so grim,
did give you many scares;
then met one so thin and mean,
and "present" you did find.

"...there is no knowing where you might be swept off to."

Woods so dark and spiders so big,
they helped you prove your worth,
with the aid of what you found,
and bolder did you get.

"Do you realize that this is the very path that goes through Mirkwood..."

Mountain high hid dragon of old,
until you found the door;
made yourself a burgler then,
such treasure for to save!

"and that if you let it, it might take you to the Lonely Mountain..."

War and toil and journeys so long,
your spirit did not break;
home again you found yourself,
inside your own sweet halls.

The years they passed, and ring you held,
not knowing what you had;
'til one day it passed along
to nephew from your hand.

"I am leaving everything to him..."

Of rings and magic, you'd not known
that much 'til you let go;
on the story went from there,
becoming far too real.

So old you got, and tales you wrote,
until it came your time,
dear Bilbo, wise old Hobbit,
to lay the Red Book down.

"But I at last with weary feet....
My evening-rest and sleep to meet."

Daffodil, these are wonderful (I hope you don’t mind me posting in your thread!)

We do have a specific Poetry place as well, the Cottage of Lost Play https://lotrfanaticsplaza.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=5 which is where people share their poems - this thread would fit better in there if you just want this to be a poetry thread for you, but if you’d like it to be a place where all Shire visitors can share song and verse, it’s fine to stay here. Let me know what you think.

Arien, ahhhh - I didn't know that! I need to move it over there, then! But can it actually be moved, or do I need to do a copy/paste of the poems over there? And sorry to be so long getting back to you; I was checking in here almost daily, but when I saw how little activity there was in here, I stopped checking nearly so much. It seems that, though the Plaza is up again, not too many people actually do much on it, which I think is rather sad. So many of us used to be in here a great deal of the time! I just desperately wish that everything had been archived, as much has been lost (and I've tried the Wayback Machine, but it can only do so much).

Yes - it’s a huge shame about all that was lost. But we are seeing lots of wonderful new stuff too :smooch:

For Love and Honour

A dark day of battle and death,
a warrior lone, and an enemy black,
facing each other with weapons of war,
knowing that neither of them would turn back.

A shield raised up on high to shine,
a tearstained face, hidden under a mask;
blackened the foe's heart in hatred and pride,
lifting a weapon of grim evil task.

Where is the fear, Eowyn, Eowyn?
Where is the fear, maid of Rohan?
Buried down deep, 'neath the pain and the grief,
buried beneath love and duty.

A laugh dark and fell amid screams,
a challenger fair, desperation did feel;
ghastly the voice of a foe beyond fear,
hissing his answer, did not make her reel:

"Thou fool. No living man may hinder me!"

A sword lifting up in response,
the beating of wings of a creature now nigh;
hideous hide flying next to her face,
reply made she ringing, clear to the sky:

"But no living man am I! You look upon a woman..."

A silence of doubt in reply,
the screaming of beast bearing down on her then;
deadly the stroke cleaving into the neck,
as she faced death-blow, up came her small friend.

Where is the fear, Eowyn, Eowyn?
Where is the fear, maid of Rohan?
Buried down deep, 'neath the pain and the grief,
buried beneath love and duty.

A terrible foe up above,
such twisted hard hate beating down to the ground;
desp'rate the sword driving through the fell flesh,
Hobbit heart pounding, and honour new-found.

Where is the fear, Merry-lad, Merry-lad?
Where is the fear, Shire-Hobbit?
Buried down deep, 'neath the duty and pride,
buried beneath love and honour.

A deathly pall clinging to sky,
yet changing the airs, and the battle below;
honour had found them whose hearts did stay true,
yet grievous the wounds that they came to know.

Where are the tears, Eowyn, Eowyn?
Where are the tears, maid of Rohan?
Buried down deep, 'neath the pain and the grief,
buried beneath love and duty.

Where is the youth, Merry-lad, Merry-lad?
Where is the youth, Shire-Hobbit?
Buried down deep, 'neath the duty and pride,
buried beneath love and honour.

Bond of Love

"As a father to me", you said,
not knowing the pain to come;
"for a little while", he replied,
and too soon it all was done.

In true fealty an oath you took,
he honoured your will to serve;
and he took you in, there and then,
for to stay with him and learn.

What made you do it, Merry-lad, Shire youth?
What made you take that vow?
Love and honour, that was why,
to Theoden he bowed.

"As a father to me", you said,
and meant it down in your heart;
"for a little while", he replied,
whilst loving you from the start.

If either of you had known,
the kinship would be so short,
come into your mind, would it have,
to leave you outside the court?

What made you do it, Merry-lad, Shire youth,
What made you take that vow?
Love and honour, that was why,
to Theoden he bowed.

"As a father to me", you said,
not knowing the pain to come;
"for a little while", he replied,
and too soon it all was done.......

Hello Daffodil: Sorry I haven't posted yet. Awesome to read your (new?) poems. Soms do speak to me from personal circumstances. Wayback is intense digging. And costs perseverance. I know it is quiet around at times.
Just call me Aiks or Aikári. Notify is off.

Aikari, hullo! Thank you so much, and no, they're not new, actually, but poems I had written and posted in the old Plaza, in my poetry threads in the Shire. I thought I'd come into the new Plaza, see who was here, and post them again, since there may be new folks who've never seen them before. And yes, the Wayback Machine is, indeed, intense digging!

Okay - maybe it's time for a wee bit of a parody.....totally singable, of course, lol!

(tune: "If I Were A Rich Man", from "Fiddler On the Roof")

If I Had the One Ring
(as sung by Boromir)

If I had the One Ring,
ya ba dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dum
I'd have such a power in my hand
if I had that one gold band!

I wouldn't have to fear then,
ya ba dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dum
if the One Ring, it were on my hand,
strongest would I be in all the lands!
I'd make my father proud, for I would take it to him,
show him exactly what I'd got;
and he would love me more than he even might!
I'd make sure all our lands were free of friends of Sauron,
oh, and in a lousy mood he'd be--
then screaming out his threats both day and night!

I'd be a strong, wise, patient, kind, fair leader with
folk all around to heed my cry,
gath'ring quickly, against our foes to stand!
And every blast of horn, beat of drum, cry of voice, neigh of horse
would bring every friend around for aid,
and all would say, fair Boromir's The Man!
Yesssss!
If I had the One Ring,
ya ba dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dum
I'd have such a power in my hand
if I had that one gold band!

We wouldn't have to fight hard
ya ba dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dum
with that ring we'd every battle win,
Sauron's chances truly would be dim!

I'd see my dad, my father, reigning as he ought to then,
on a dais fair and high,
ruling lands as far as the eye could see;
I'd see dear Faramir too, so happy, even jolly,
oh, how his songs would never cease,
for a poet he would ever be.

The leaders of all lands
would all then come to call on me--
they would beg us to defend them,
we of Gondor, proud and strong;
"pretty please, Boromir",
"on our knees, Boromir",
making such request in time of dire need!
ya ba da da, ya ba da da, ya ba da da da....

And it would so fill me with pride then,
just to honour their requests;
after all, I would because I could!
If ring I had, I'd have the power I crave to
lead all the people everyday,
and maybe even sit on a dais neat;
then I could sit and survey our earned abundance fair
from the morn to the eve--
our dominion then would be complete!
Yesssss!

If I had the One Ring,
ya ba dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dum
I'd have such a power in my hand
if I had that one gold band!

I wouldn't have to fear then,
ya ba dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dibby dum,
If I had that One Ring on my hand,
I could lead and rule well all our lands,
Strength for Gondor can't be a bad plan!
Oh, to have that one gold baaaaaaaaaaaand!

*Daffodil comes in and sees no one's been around, and figures she should maybe cause a small ruckus by posting yet more total nonsense! Let the parodies continue!*

(Tune: Oscar Meyer Weiner)

Oscar Meyer Mithril!

Oh I wish I had a coat of Mithril armor,
that is what I’d truly like to wear,
for if I had a coat of Mithril armor,
the Orcsies couldn’t hurt me anywhere!

(Tune: Gilligan’s Island)

'Twas A "Tour", All Right!

Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale,
a tale of a fateful trip,
that started in the Shire green
when bad news it did slip (when bad news it did slip!)

The journey started getting rough,
the hobbits, they got lost!
If not for the courage of the hunters three
More lives it would have cost (more lives it would have cost!)

Adventure’s done now, it’s OK
’cause Middle-Earth was saved
’Cause Aragorn,
and Gandalf too,
the Hobbits four,
and Gimli,
poor Boromir,
and legolas the woodland Elf
did fight to save the daaaaaaaaaaaaaay!

(Tune: Brady Bunch)

The Fellowship Bunch!

Here’s the story
of a lad named Frodo
who was dwelling in the Shire so fair one day
and he was adventure-prone, like his uncle
who travelled far away.

Here’s the story
of his true companions
who had no idea of what they were in for
all of them had things to do, their own problems,
which waited evermore.

’Til the one day when the laddie met these fellows
and they knew that they were much more than a "trip",
that this group must somehow hold a counsel,
that’s the way they all became the fellowship!

The fellowship
The fellowship
That’s the wayyyy they became the fellowship!

Daffodil: Really nice those latest ones, and again I have no recollection of them. You are quite good at writing poem parodies. I never came across such, so it is a first time for me. On the subject of ME. If I got the One Ring... the World would be mine... :lol: Funny!

Aikari: Thanks so much! It's rather scary, really, how easily writing such parodies comes for me! It takes me little time to come up with such, generally speaking! And there's more where those came from, LOL! :lol: And, since your tag at the bottom mentions Gondolin, which involves the Elves, I have something that I think will make you grin, again!

Lembas Bread, Lembas Bread!
*to the tune of Matchmaker, Matchmaker, from Fiddler On The Roof*

Elven lad, elven lad, bring me some bread!
Bring it right now, don't fill me with dread!
Don't tell me you're out of it, 'cause if you are,
I'll drop-kick you oh, so far!

Elven lad, elven lad, lembas I need,
give me it now, with greatest speed!
Bring it to me, so that I may now eat,
as it's surely one big treat!

Remember, all of the times I have asked you for that fine recipe!
If you'd just give me that listing, then I would not be such a pest, you see!

Elven lad, elven lad, bring me that bread,
strengthens, it does, goes to my head!
Bake me some quick and I'll give you a kiss,
my lembas I surely miss!

*Elven lad replies*
Lembas! Yes lembas!
Do I have a treat for you!
Such baking, and making, I do know how to do,
and it's a fine bread, a brown bread---true? True!
I know it makes you happy, you eat it every night!
And that, my dear is fine--more than all right!
But you think that I'm a slave?! Well, I do the best I can!
With no payment, no thankyous, no honour, no oven--be glad an Elf I aaaaaam!

Elven lad, elven lad, I see your need!
Thanks you shall have, many indeed!
Just bring me my lembas and all shall be wellllllll---
until the next time
that you are late
bringing to me
my full up plate......
of wonderful lembas breaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad!! *So there!*

Aikari: Thankies muchly! If you could see all the parodies I've written, all together in one place, you might really think I was a bit bonkers, lol! 'Tis a strange talent to have, methinks! :lol:

Ode to Haldir
(or: Ode to Tall, Blonde, and Gorgeous!)

Ahhhh, I saw an Elf, so tall and fair, and golden was his long, long hair,
all dressed in gray and silver, he, there standing underneath the trees;
it was Haldir, his name they called, that smote my heart and me enthralled,
until perchance he called my name, and then love true did me enflame!

When once those eyes beheld my own, 'twas just for him and him alone,
that lo! I sang a sweet love's song, beneath those trees in Galadhon,
until the day waned long and cool; then he led me beside the pool
of waters rippling ever sweet, where washed we there our tired feet;
and sat us down to spend the eve, in speaking of the golden leaves,
and wonders old and new and fair, and surely did we linger there,
until the day was long past done, with nightchill after setting sun;
though loathe to part, we knew we must, 'til in the morn', for that was just.

Then morning came and brought its dew, with dearest, sweetest light anew,
when once again I found him there, upon the green so ever fair,
and sang again a sweet love's song, while joined with him in Galadhon;
and spent we many happy days, whilst walking there 'long brightened ways.

When after weeks and months of time, that seemed forever up to climb,
my love so clad in silver gray, he begged of me to never stray,
but stay with him upon the lawns of Nephidril and stars of dawn,
and I so fully acquiesced, for love I knew then, at its best.

So now we wander long afield, under the trees that never yield,
and speak of very many things, but most of all, of true love's wings
that bear us up beneath the stars, so free to fly, where nothing mars
our hearts and spirits ever glad, in truest peace we've ever had.

Proud Mountain
(as sung by Frodo)

(tune: Proud Mary)

Left a fine hole in the Shire,
wound up with a ring of such power great,
that I had to hurry, on my feet so furry,
didn’t have the time, I just could not wait

Big eye keep on turnin’,
Mt. Doom it keep on burnin’--
trudgin’, trudgin’, trudgin’ up the mountain
trudgin’, trudgin’, trudgin’ up the mountain

Took a few friends along with me,
didn’t have no sense, they just had to go,
from them I could not flee, they just would not hear me,
when I told them all they would hate it so

Big eye keep on turnin’,
Mt. Doom it keep on burnin’--
trudgin’, trudgin’, trudgin’ up the mountain
trudgin’, trudgin’, trudgin’ up the mountain

Trav’ling along with ol’ Strider,
getting chased and hurt out in nowhere land,
had to get to Rivvie, ‘fore the dart could take me,
needed healing quickly by some Elvish hands

Big eye keep on turnin’,
Mt. Doom it keep on burnin’--
trudgin’, trudgin’, trudgin’ up the mountain
trudgin’, trudgin’, trudgin’ up the mountain

Since then, some others have joined us,
what a motley crew we do look like now,
short, tall, fat and skinny, but we are no ninnies,
gotta ditch the ring, now Elrond’s told us how

Big eye keep on turnin’,
Mt. Doom it keep on burnin’--
trudgin’, trudgin’, trudgin’ up the mountain
trudgin’, trudgin’, trudgin’ up the mountain
trudgin’, trudgin’, trudgin’ up the mountain
trudgin’, trudgin’, trudgin’ up the mountain….

Sauron Got Outsmarted by Two Hobbits!
(tune: "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer!")

Sauron got outsmarted by two Hobbits,
walking through his land one horrid eve;
you can say there's no such thing as heros,
but as for all us others, we believe!

Now this tale is rather gory,
tells about the orcs, all black;
you had better stop your ears up,
if you don't like thoughts of ick and hew and hack!

Now you know about the Hobbits,
how they had to ditch the ring,
and they had to climb the mountain,
that did always spew and belch and hot ash fling!

It was truly, truly hard now,
what they had to go and do;
Frodo lost a valued finger--
Gollum now, he really wanted that ring, too!

Sauron got outsmarted by two Hobbits,
walking through his land one horrid eve;
you can say there's no such thing as heros,
but as for all us others, we believe!

(go up a step in pitch!)
Sauron got outsmarted by two Hobbits,
walking through his land one horrid eve;
you can say there's no such thing as heros,
but as for all us others, we belieeeeeeeeve!

Daffodil: I am no fan of hobbits at all. Sauron did it himself, allowing to be destroyed, tying his life to a piece of gold. He was thrown in body and all in chains in the timeless Void. Melkor was only defeated. Still funny that parody about dumb Sauron. The Mountain I am not getting alas. But the Ode to Haldir? :heart: A lovely one. Could have been written by a lovestruck elfmaiden. :lol: I don't know if I would consider you bonkers. Talent is how it comes, nothing strange about it, as it looks to me. Thanks for sharing! :thumbs:

Silky Gooseness: Awww, that's a shame that you're not familiar with the actual songs, as it would make these that much funnier to you! I'm glad you like them anyway, though! Thanks!

Aikari: What! You don't like hobbits?! Awwww, but hobbits are great cooks, and so much fun at a party! :lol: That being said, I'm thinking of switching kingdoms, and joining the Elves, as there just doesn't seem to be anyone hanging out in the Shire these days. It's really boring in there right now, which is truly sad! I miss the old Plaza, the way it was before, for sure! And I've always liked the Elves, especially since I'm a writer and artist, and singer. The Elves have always seemed to me to be another kingdom I could fit well with, too.

Fair Halls High

High on a wind-swept mount it sits,
amidst grasslands wide,
under heaven blue;
fair are the halls of old therein,
carry on through years,
many lives of men.

Gold is its roof 'neath morning sun,
gleaming brighter still,
cheering many hearts;
proud is the king who rules within,
leading well his folk---
the folk of Edoras.

Battle's Eve, King's Heart

A dark day
a king renewed
a plan rehearsed
a place readied

A fear felt
a doubt ling'ring
a mind troubled
a thought entrenched

"Who am I, Gamling?"
"You are our King, Sire."
"And you trust your King."

A grim fate
a fell darkness
a heart pounding
a blood racing

A fell en'my
a sheer malice
a dire evil
a thought entrenched

"Who am I, Gamling?"

A storm neared
a day dreaded
a night threat'ning
a man standing

"Who am I, Gamling?"......

"Your men, my lord, will follow you to whatever end."

A fear felt
a doubt ling'ring
a mind troubled
a thought entrenched

"To whatever end....."

Bond of Love

"As a father to me", you said,
not knowing the pain to come;
"for a little while", he replied,
and too soon it all was done.

In true fealty an oath you took,
he honoured your will to serve;
and he took you in, there and then,
for to stay with him and learn.

What made you do it, Merry-lad, Shire youth?
What made you take that vow?
Love and honour, that was why,
to Theoden he bowed.

"As a father to me", you said,
and meant it down in your heart;
"for a little while", he replied,
whilst loving you from the start.

If either of you had known,
the kinship would be so short,
come into your mind, would it have,
to leave you outside the court?

What made you do it, Merry-lad, Shire youth,
What made you take that vow?
Love and honour, that was why,
to Theoden he bowed.

"As a father to me", you said,
not knowing the pain to come;
"for a little while", he replied,
and too soon it all was done.......

Unexpected Hero

A heart of loyalty he had,
and swore an oath upon a sword
unto a king of goodly lands
and gave his strong and binding word.

A hand of friendship then he gave,
and took upon him many cares;
unto the end he bravely stood,
his fealty kept through evil's lairs.

A stature short, though no less brave
was he in heart than many men;
the strongest yearning of his soul
fulfilled it was, helped by a friend.

A last surprise, it gave him cause
to put aside his greatest fears;
with single stroke, the evil fell
then loosed he all his bitter tears.

A battle won, at last it was
upon the fields of Pelennor;
he stumbled weary in the streets,
but then found honour all the more.

A truth it is, shall always be,
that though a person small of frame
be thought to have less chance than most,
can show a heart of loyal flame.

~Into Life's Maturation Chamber~

Youngest of the four were they,
and far too quick to volunteer;
they'd no idea of where they'd be
when danger gravest came up near.

Sent themselves into the fray,
for friendship's sake they spoke up loud;
reality would hit them hard
when they went walking with that crowd.

Youngest of the four were they,
yes much too young to understand;
they did not know just what they did
when they yelled out, to Elrond ran.

Sent themselves into the fray,
to go with Frodo near or far;
and could not yet so fully see
just how complete would life be marred.

Youngest of the four were they,
and yet their hearts were true and bold;
they did not realize just yet
how death be bitter, hard, and cold.

Sent themselves into the fray,
for pure love's sake they did this deed;
and when it came down to the test,
they proved themselves true friends at need.

Hey Daffodil: Aye, yeah I have no particular love for Hobbits. I can appreciate a few of my own invention, but otherwise? Their way of simple life isn't my idea to live :lol: . If you like to join another area, go ahead. Anyway, back to your new editions. Few about the Rohirrim. They do come to me as ironic. Merry and Pippin are to be better to digest than Frodo and Sam together. They are two equal friends, and not the master and servant how you can perceive from Sam's view. The rhyme is very nice. I am not able to that in English. I guess you have to be native for that.

Aikari: Sorry you think so little of the Hobbits! A simple life can often be the best kind, without all the drama and nonsense that can happen in a more complex reality. And Frodo and Sam may have started out as master and servant, but it quickly changed to a deep friendship. In the movies, Frodo tells Sam: "Frodo wouldn't have gotten far without Sam." And that's very, very true. And Sam was the only one to actually take the Ring, wear and use it - in the middle of the enemy's own territory, no less! - and willingly give it back without a fight. He had a momentary temptation, but that was all. No one else who had used the Ring was able to do that! And Sam never gave up, either on Frodo, or the whole quest. That's true friendship. That's true loyalty. There's a whole lot to be said for that!
Loyal Heart of Love
Alone
You were so alone.

Small
So very, very small
in a place of hate,
in a place of lies,
in a place of death

Never
were you so afraid.

Hard
so very, very hard

then to find your way,
then to find your strength,
then to find your friend

Courage
did you then need.

Love
so very, very true

found to help your will,
found to help your heart,
found to help your soul

to do what it took to go searching on,
to do what it took to choke back the tears,
to do what it took to follow the foes,
to do what it took to manage the fears--

to do what it took to find your dear friend,
alone in the tower almost at his end,
and if there were doubts in your heart e'er before,
then banished they were when you burst through that door

and saved him from fate worse than death could e'er make--
and willingly gave back the ring you did take.

Never
should you doubt your worth again.

Proven,
your quality,
the very highest--
Samwise the Brave.

Greatheart

"I am glad you are here with me.
Here at the end of all things, Sam."

And you were glad, weren't you--
for he helped you, didn't he;
waited then with you--
waited
for the end to come.

"And Frodo wouldn't have got far without Sam..."

And on the mount of ash
you both laid down, finally--
he taking your hand,
struggled
to hold back the tears.

"And Frodo wouldn't have got far without Sam..."

And you did dream, didn't you--
as eagles flew, came to aid,
they found you there,
lying
as the lava fell.

"I am glad you are here with me.
Here at the end of all things, Sam."

Then you were saved, both of you--
and woke to light, morning clear;
you and dear friend,
alive
still side by side.

"And Frodo wouldn't have got far without Sam..."

Daffodil: Don't mind me about Hobbits :smooch: . Nonetheless I find your creations very nice. I believe you have drawn always a lot of inspiration from the tales. The rhyme makes them complete. Your explanation on true friendship reflects well back in the two poems. And this time I don't believe they are parodies, but genuine ones from the heart written. The Old Plaza? It wasn't what it was by April '20. Bit more activity over more forums, of which a lot were silent as well. Greater loss was the database of years behind it. I miss it also.

Aikari: I'm glad you do like those! Sam's my hero, honestly, as his character has such a good heart, and he refused to give up! As to the old Plaza, you're right about all those years of activity and archives being lost. I really hate that too, and this Plaza, while very close in appearance, is seriously lacking in people to participate. Far, far too quiet in here, no matter what forum or page you go to. Sigh.

Daffodil: It is lovely to see you admire Sam so much, and you're right he is a very good person. He is definite not someone who got a secret agenda. But otherwise I was always attracted to far more complex characters, and I chose te Minyar from across the sea, largely untouched by Melkor's darkness. And they have a great access to the Valar while most peoples never have, or believe in their existence. Love to see more of you coming up! :thumbs:

Aikari: Is that someone from the Silmarillion? We have a copy of it, though I've not read it. I know next to nothing about the Valar, honestly, having concentrated much more on reading the Hobbit and LOTR. And yes, there's lots more coming from me, still! (lol!)
Contest of Wills

A maiden fair, cold as the icy stars,
beautiful as a new dawn rising,
wild heart within a cage,
firey spirit contained,
yet only barely.

A twisted man, dark as an evil pit,
hideous as a worm hard trammelled,
black lust behind fell eyes,
greedy grasping desires,
with nothing fullfilled.

A loyal heart, true in its every beat,
deepening to a long, dark sorrow,
fierce soul inside a maid,
hard'ning ever again,
will steeling within.

"Your words are poison!"

A coward black, false in his every move,
glittering eyes in pale, fell face,
grim mind within a man,
leering always indeed,
heart blackened fore'er.

"Your words are poison!"

A shield-maid high, not cowed by twisted lust,
cowardly worm in man's bent form;
the first honour would win,
other would flee in wrath,
truth won o'er deceit--

"Your words are poison!"

Beloved Kindred

"Daughter of kings"
You fit that description
so very well--
'twas surely your part
to play to the end.

High the heart, true the flame,

"Shield-maid of Rohan"
And didn't you know it
deep in your heart--
you proved it was true
beyond any doubt.

fair the soul, bore such bitter a pain,

Dear neice of Theoden
But that was no title,
'twas just the truth--
brought grief to you hard
before all was done.

to know the hurts and scars of war,
and grief to carry evermore.

Daffodil: aww, about Eowyn :heart: . Lovely poems! She is one of the characters I love from LOTR, besides the energising Boromir. And *nods* they are the first branch of the Eldar and are mentioned in the Silmarillion. They have a very important role in the last battle of Beleriand. The men are going to war on the mainland, the women back home provide relief for the war, such as caring for the harvests and foods sent to the mainland, as taking care over the wounded, the refugees and the procecuted. King Finarfin's Valinorean Noldor are a tenth of the total of their people once, so their influence and role isn't big in the great war. The Host of Valinor is 85% to 90% or more, Minyar under the leadership of Ingil. Melkor is the greatest villain of the Valar in the First Age, just as Sauron of the Maiar is in the Second and Third Ages. But as you never read the Silmarillion, I will not elaborate more about it, though personally it interests me very much and write quite lot about it still. Most of it is in Rivvy's place, but I can upload it here as well. :grin:

Aikari: Yes, I do very much like the character of Eowyn! She's my favorite of the Rohirrim! And Boromir meant well, but good intentions don't always lead to good outcomes.
And now - time for more!

Fair Love’s Long Road

Alone, she walks by quiet pools,
her dark hair flowing in the wind,
contemplating things far-seen
fair brow knit in furrowed row.

Alone, he stands on darkened hills,
his keen eyes gazing, searching far,
as through the mists of dawn gray-red
he senses swiftly changing tide.

Gray eyes sad and knowing, calm
watching now the new day rising
upon fair valley safely kept
while fear knocks soft upon her heart.

Turning at last to go, he sighs--
his face is stern, yet sad, of late
for far through perils, toils he goes
before his love again he meets.

These two so fair of mien and bearing,
apart remaining, long years counted,
now at last may lives entwine
when once their trials they have passed.

Visions of a Dream

Lone figure stands upon emerald green
amidst wood ancient, dark, yet fair;
breezes bend boughs, although all unseen,
while kissing soft the flowing hair.

Shimmering the gown so long, ever bright
cascading down to meet the earth;
billows in waves of gossamer light
giving fair feet a wider berth.

Eyes of clear gray gazing here and then there
solemn a glance so fair, so keen;
lifts now her face to the moving airs’
gentle caresses sweet and clean.

Comes into the vale a wandering myth
thinks he has strayed into a dream;
beautiful vision now he sees with
eyes wide with wonder, filled as streams.

Meet softly now on the glades fair and green
promise true hearts, though so far long;
ever they wait for years not yet seen,
hearts bound with love cords, true and strong.

Hands of Healing, Heart of Gold

Cloaked and hooded,
humility bound,
a heart of gold
did softly pound

with grief belayed,
deepening fears
that waited still,
along with tears.

And as he worked,
assailing the dark
that placed itself
upon each heart,

the message ran
like fire, 'twas said,
e'en as he knelt
down by their beds.

Then with her words
from ancient lore,
a woman wise,
the truth she bore,

though knew it not
when first she spoke,
but found it out,
as did her folk:

"The hands of the King are the hands of a healer,
and so shall the rightful King be known."

Waning of the Evenstar

"There is no ship now that would bear me hence..."

Under the fading trees
she spent her final time,
alone among the leaves
of failing gold sublime

Under the fading trees
were all her days replayed,
as in her thoughts she breezed
back to the life they'd made

Under the fading trees
came tears of grief anew,
that long gone o'er the seas
were all her kin so true

Under the fading trees
the land became so old,
when gone then were the leaves,
she too did leave the fold

Under the fading trees
did linger memory,
as rain washed o'er the lees
and took her tears to sea.

A Winter's Breath
~Fading of the Evenstar~

Their King has gone,
their Queen has followed
her heart's blue night,
no stars, no light
as her love true
is wrapped and shrouded,
mists have fallen before her eyes

Their King has gone,
their Queen has followed
and gone afar,
lone heart, no star
will shine again
for her gaze darkened,
grief has taken up all her life

Their King has gone,
their Queen has followed
for sadness reigns,
fills all her veins
forevermore,
sad sighs do echo,
into wood has she borne her night

Their King has gone,
their Queen has followed,
and cold the stones
as white as bones
so sadly wail
in wind's wild moaning,
inside the walls they surely grieve

Their King has gone,
their Queen has followed,
the Evenstar
has faded far,
become dark night
upon naith lying,
and Gondor feels a Winter's breath.

Beautiful words Daffodil. I think you’d really enjoy the Silmarillion actually - some very poetic language there which might be great for inspiring some of your next verses?! You paint a really vivid picture with simple, short lines. Looking forward to seeing more!

It takes a very special talent to be able to create a good parody and you've created quite a few that brought a smile to my face! I'm loving the light hearted, sunny feeling you've put into so many of your poems, and you're producing so many at a great rate too! Well done and keep it up

Zeal & Ardor: Thank you so much! I'm very happy that you like them! These are all poems that I actually wrote back when we were all on the old, original Plaza, and I really was writing them at a pretty good clip back then! Maybe not quite as quickly as I'm posting them now, but fairly close to that!

Haven

A mysterious place
to outsiders,
yet to those who knew it well,
a haven safe, a harbor far from sea
amidst a world of troubles and
a host of sorrows,
of woes
countless, numberless, growing
until all the world around it
became encompassed and ensnared
in the engrossing and encroaching
darkness,
leaving one lone spot of light,
leaving one dear place of peace,
that hid itself away,
that would not be extinguished--

Hope Has Ever Bloomed

In a courtyard
in a city of stone
from ancient times, from ancient years
the tree has ever grown;
from a sapling
from a seed truly fair
from ancient times, from ancient years
its beauty fully shown

Through hard ages
through foul wars and through peace
from ancient times, from ancient years
its blossoms have released
to the four winds
to a people so free
from anceint times, from ancient years
its life has had new lease

Yet once only
yet in one dreadful time
from ancient times, from ancient years
tree lost its life sublime;
withered slowly
blossoms dead and long gone
from ancient times, from ancient years
'twas needed, a new clime

In a courtyard
in a city of stone
from ancient times, from ancient years
new hope it was re-sown;
from a new seed
from a young tree in snow
from ancient times, from ancient years
white blooms they have regrown

Now forever
now in beauty anewed
from ancient times, from ancient years
its wonder fully viewed;
blossoms growing
from a white tree so fair
from ancient times, from ancient years
new hope has ever bloomed.

I'm actually quite grateful I can't find any of my old poetry from the the OG Plaza, I was an angsty teen metalhead and it shoooowed :lol: but you're material is wonderful! I'm impressed by how much inspiration you find in the world of Tolkien and use it uniquely because it's hard for me to find poetic inspiration like that. I'm good at the prose but the poetry leaves me flabbergasted. I'm quite fond of Haven, keep it up!

Mortiis: LOL! Your description of yourself as a teen made me laugh! I'm glad you enjoy my poetry, though! I do find so much inspiration in LOTR, and it really is the classic good vs evil story, though more epic than most! What scares me about my writing is that it's so freaking easy for me to come up with the parodies! I am so serious right now - I can come up with that kind of stuff in just about no time flat, much of the time! I always say, "Don't get me started!", as I'm dangerous once started, LOL! Just to let you know, there are more of those that I've not posted in here yet, but trust me, I will get them posted, and likely soon! :lol:

(tune: "Hello, Dolly!")

Hello, Goodbye, Good Riddance!

Well, hello, Sauron,
yes, hello, Sauron
we are here
to send you back where you belong!

You're looking bad, Sauron,
and you're mad, Sauron,
you're still stinking,
you're still thinking
you can rule us all!

Well, hello, Sauron,
we have news, Sauron,
and we're here
to tell you you're about to die, so--
hit the sky, moron
you're about to dissipate, Sauron,
and you're never gonna come back here again!

Well, hello, Sauron,
yes, hello, Sauron,
it's so grand
to know your ring's just fallen in!

You're looking gray, Sauron,
but then, hey, Sauron,
we might look the same way too
if our house
just caved in!

So now goodbye, Sauron,
we won't cry, Sauron,
for we're all so very glad to see you go now--
that's the breaks, ain't it,
we're not gonna miss your tricks, one bit,
and we'll have a peaceful, happy life,
Aragorn the king will take a wife,
and we won't put up with evil's strife again!

Cirith Ungol Remix!

Ciiiiiiiiiiiirith Ungol,
where the orcs come bounding down the stairs,
where the land is gray
and you will stay
out of the way
if truly now you're scared!

Ciiiiiiiiiiirith Ungol,
does that name put fear into your heart?
If you only knew
what's stalking you
behind your back
you'd quickly now depart!

The orcs they belong to this land,
and this land you do know, 'tis not grand!

Yeah honey, hey! You'd best get out of theeeeeeeee way!
You’re knowin’ now that
it's stinking foul, Cirith Ungol,
Cirith Ungol, go 'way!

Ciiiiiiiiiirith Ungol,
See the red eye follow you along!
You had better flee
or you he'll see
and quickly now
he'll add you to his throng!

Ciiiiiiiiirith Ungol,
It will follow you into your dreams!
For a better fate,
do stay up late
and pillows take
to muffle all your screams!

Black Mordor, the name of this land,
and this land it is in Sauron's hand!

Yeah honey, hey! You'd best get out of theeeeeeeee way!
You’re knowin’ now that
it's stinking foul, Cirith Ungol,
Cirith Ungol, go 'way!

You’re knowin’ now that
it's stinking foul, Cirith Ungol,
Cirith Ungol, go 'way!

Daffodil: Another :heart: for your new additions. What can I add? Hello goodbye could be written by Samwise, I feel a bit his voice in those words. As for the other parody poem... Is that one perhaps good for an Uruk-hai composer of Saruman? Who mocks the lands of Mordor and the inhabitants there? They were funny. :grin:

Ohhhhhh, mercy! I've done it again! Gone and gotten busy with other things, and completely forgotten to get in here and post! Wow, sometimes it just gets like that, without any planning or even noticing on my part! Well, let's see if I can make it up to you all, or if anyone's even noticed my absence!

(tune: The Sound of Music)

The Sound of the Rohirrim

The plains they are filled
with the sound of hoofbeats,
a sound we have heard
many times before
For hard ride the fair
proud high sons of Rohan,
and swift comes their
aid now to Gondor!
My heart wants to
tell of the flowing golden hair
flying high in the breeze,
of their steeds ever running
through the grass
like the wind on the lees
I know they shall fly
to the aid of all
who now call Gondor home,
and send soon in flight
all the foul orcs to their final tomb!
I sing of their deeds
when all hearts are fearful,
I know they shall win
and so valiantly,
Come sing of the sons,
yes the sons of Rohan,
and them praise greatly!

The Prince & The Steward

A banner high and fair,
it waves now in the wind;
yet war is everywhere,
much struggling within
the walls of ancient stone,
as hard the en'my howls;
the man rides not alone,
upon his horse so proud.

Behold the blue and gold,
bespeaks of royals true;
yet sadness his eyes hold,
to mar the prince's view;
the bloodlust it goes on,
and screaming fills the air,
yet his eyes are upon
one true, and of heart fair.

In through the gates he rides,
with news of trials grave;
his worry, tries to hide,
for healing hands could save
this life so hurt and maimed,
for black breath did it find;
almost a son it claimed,
and tried to end a line.

He clatters up the stones
of such a winding road;
though knowing haste alone
shan't help his precious load
to shake off fear and pain,
and take up life again;
dear Faramir to gain
the stewardship of Men.
