Headquarters, Nárië 20
Hyandaner Kaylin Maethyr
Pele spoke up right before
Kaylin was about to more forcefully shrug
Ziran's hand away. She had no idea what she was going to do herself - all she knew was she had to get closer to
Isys for some reason. And that she was seeing red.
Pele's words stalled her slightly, although she was still focused on the
Ehtyar from lack of a better way to vent her anger at the moment.
The mention of poison made
Kaylin glance at the
Captain. Combined with
Isys asking about the vial earlier - which Kaylin had ignored at the time - it seemed like she was honor-bound to say something. At least, if she was also going to demand open communication from the others as they went forward.
Yet
Pele went on with more information and then some questions of her own. When she directly asked Kaylin about
Cadil, the
Hyandaner growled rather than spoke her response.
"
Cadil is fine." She saw him around the pubs every so often, and when she did they would play a few card games or darts together. "Last saw him about a week ago."
Ready to return her full attention to
Isys,
Pele's next bit of information was... jarring. It halted
Kaylin in her untaken step - and her blue-grey eyes widened as they focused on Pele. Some of the fury left them to make room for shock, disappointment and... well, a taste of something along the lines of what
Mourgan had to be feeling.
Nine months ago?
Pele had received a threatening note from the woman she was most afraid of,
nine months ago? And she hadn't told anyone until now? She looked around the room at the others, seeing that
Karis,
Mourgan and
Isys had indeed not known. When Kaylin looked over to their new
Lieutenant, she saw no surprise in the blonde's face. So.
She had known. Pele had told
someone, then. So it wasn't that she'd been too afraid to speak up. Just that she hadn't wanted or dared to tell anyone other than
Arnyn. Her expression darkened again before looking back at Pele. Or perhaps she should just say
Captain.
The news that she had accepted a recruit who made her feel like she was standing face to face with
Relic, made
Kaylin's head tilt down. Someone who made
Pele's defenses go up, for some reason. Someone who reminded her of this Relic, in some way. Someone... whom Kaylin could focus on. Someone to hook her claws into, once she got some proof... Someone tangible. Someone close.
"Assign her to me,"
Kaylin suggested, in a deceptively quiet tone of voice. It sounded almost... casual.
Lieutenant Arnyn Dealedwen
Arnyn kept a careful eye on
Kaylin, since it was obvious the redhead was seething. Kaylin seemed incredibly hot-tempered. While Arnyn had known Kaylin to be extraverted and open with her feeling, she had not expected the other
Hyandaner to be so... emotional, was perhaps the word?
Karis seemed to have picked up on
Kaylin's mood as well, and put a hand on the woman's shoulder as she asked a question that had also popped into
Arnyn's mind.
And then at least
Kaylin seemed to maintain enough reason to ask another of the questions at the forefront of
Arnyn's mind: how was
Shamara's escape only a rumor? Her insistence on finding out for certain definitely met with Arnyn's approval.
Kaylin's other question, about
Relic, was a smart one. So was her suggestion. But Arnyn knew it had been months, and thus a difficult task for
Pele to make any such list. Unless she had already been keeping one herself.
Mourgan, like
Karis, also wanted to know what
Shamara and
Relic looked like. And asked whether
Pele had noticed anything unusual. A good question, and a bit less specific than
Kaylin's near
demand of a list of people.
The next moment,
Ehtyar Ilisys declared that
Shamara's escape was indeed no rumour: that she knew for certain of the woman's escape and that she had even seen her... on the Anduin cruise.
That was a surprise.
While
Kaylin turned her head to stare at
Ilisys,
Arnyn carefully watched both of the women. The
Lieutenant understood that Ilisys had not come to tell her about
Shamara; after all, Ilisys and Arnyn hardly knew each other and Arnyn had held no higher rank at the time. However... not telling
Pele... was questionable at best. Not only because Pele was Ilisys' commander, but also because Shamara had caused Pele personal harm. She'd had a right to know. Not reporting this to Pele until now, was... not what Arnyn would have expected. Nor what she deemed preferable. But seeing as how the
Captain was present and listening to the same account, Arnyn would not comment and would let Pele take the lead.
Arnyn had addition questions concerning the two Umbarians, other than their physical characteristics. What were their skills? What should the Rangers be most careful of - in other words: what were their known and preferred methods of operation?
Ilisys answered in part; revealing that
Shamara had carried some vial in the past - that would have most likely either contained a sedative or a poison. And Ilisys indicated that
Relic had incapacitated over a dozen people at the harbour, through some kind of toxin. So it was safe to assume that the two women were versed in poisons and sedatives of sorts. In addition to fighting skills, one would assume.
Ilisys also asked what
Relic looked like, and indicated several of them had seen
Shamara.
Arnyn was trying to piece it together. Based on everyone's questions, she deduced that
Karis and
Mourgan had seen neither,
Pele had obviously met both, and since that left
Kaylin and Ilisys, Ilisys must have meant that she and Kaylin had seen Shamara.
So Pele, Karis and Kaylin had seen Shamara, but only Pele had laid eyes on Relic. That answered a few more of Arnyn's questions. But brought forth another.
Pele addressed
Ilisys as Isys again, saying the
Ehtyar should have told her. The
Captain's tone was not very strict, which surprised Arnyn in turn, although she kept her face neutral. Pele went on to mention
Shamara using a poison on her. And more sedatives on the way to Umbar. Pele's extra tidbits of information made Arnyn's gaze grow darker. Why had they targeted Pele, out of all people? They had wanted information on Gondor - Pele had told Arnyn that much. Had Pele been a random choice, out of several options? Or had there been reasons why she had been chosen? If they knew that, they might be able to get into their enemies' minds more.
The
Captain asked
Kaylin about this
Cadil person, whom
Arnyn did not know at all, and it seemed to the
Lieutenant that the question came at an opportune time, because one look at Kaylin now told her that the redhead was ready to just about strangle
Ilisys in payment for her silence on the matters the
Ehtyar had just divulged. The question was... would Pele's question be enough to distract Kaylin?
Arnyn winced when
Pele said it had been nine months since she'd received the note from
Relic. Perhaps that would make
Kaylin angry with Pele, as well. At least it might serve to divert Kaylin's attention from
Ilisys enough to avoid a fight right in the Captain's office... When Kaylin looked over at her, Arnyn had regained her calm facial expression, but what she saw in the redhead's eyes was troubling. Kaylin had a keen sense of perception. Arnyn was convinced Kaylin knew right away that Pele had told her abut the note. She could feel it in her gut.
Yet she managed to look unfazed, and gave Kaylin a level look in return, until the redhead looked away.
The
Lieutenant tucked away the information about
Shamara and
Relic's appearance, and when
Pele mentioned having accepted a recruit by the name of
Amber, whom Pele apparently found unsettling, Arnyn's dark eyes flashed.
Kaylin's request made alarm bells go off in
Arnyn's mind. The redhead suddenly sounded all too calm. Arnyn cleared her throat. "Perhaps we can hold off on deciding what to do with
Amber until some more questions have been answered and the situation is clear to all," she suggested calmly.
Then she dove into the questions she had left.
"
Ilisys... If you have not heard from whoever is following Shamara, how do you know they are still following her at all?" Arnyn slanted her head thoughtfully. "Do you believe they would intervene if Shamara made an attempt at sequestering anyone? Or hurting anyone? And since we are speaking freely now: who is it, that you have following her?"
"How have the two of you,
Ilisys, Kaylin, come face to face with this Shamara?"
"Other than a preference for poisons and sedatives, do we know anything else about their skills? I assume they can fight, as well? What are their weapons of choice? What else do we know about their method of operations?"
"And..." She was loathe to ask, but felt like she had to. "What do Relic and Shamara know about you,
Pele? I know they tried to ask you about Gondor's defences, and you resisted their questioning. Did they get any intelligence on your person, though? Or did they gather information about you, previous to your capture, that you know about? What
can they use to get to you?" Her dark eyes touched Mourgan for just a second. She was asking about any weaknesses they might exploit; whether from knowledge or by guesswork.
"
Kaylin, Ilisys mentioned a vial as a lead just now, then looked at you. But I'm missing context there. Was there a lead to follow up on?"
