Se Riddermarket of Returning Winter

Winter has once again come to the Mark. Snow has blanketed the green fields in white. A cold wind blows and snow falls gently from the sky as dawn breaks over the Mark turned winter wonderland. As the marketplace comes to life for the day shoppers hurry from place to place bundled in thick cloaks, hats, scarves and mitts. Many carry extra packages, some wrapped with bright bows or ribbons. Mettarë is approaching, the Rohirric winter holiday, and the market is busy with people doing their shopping.

The Cavalry Liaison Office

In the center of the marketplace is the Cavalry Liaison Office. This small building is staffed by Conal, a retired Cavalry Feldmarshal, by request of the Cavalry Marshals, and is the first stop for citizens of Rohan who need to interact with the Cavalry. Rohir can come here to request the help of the Cavalry patrol, report illegal activity, thefts, or other crimes, ask questions about the Cavalry or leave missives and notes for the Marshals.

Shop Rules:
1. Shops must be realistic for Rohan. So no pizza shops, sorry.
2.NO libraries or book shops. The Rohirrim were a people of oral tradition, so would not have had things like that.
3. No repeat shops. If someone sells something already, think of another idea. We don't want overlap.
4.Tag Shivased, the lædenmanger, in the Golden Hall OOC thread for approval BEFORE opening a shop! PM must include shop name and description of what you plan to sell.
5. Shopkeepers are asked to post at least once per thread, to show your shop is still open. Those who do not post for a full thread (approx. 4 weeks) will have their shop placed on the "closed" list, and will be contacted. If the Laedenmanger does not hear from the shopkeeper by the end of the next thread, or they do not post in that time, their shop will be put up for sale.

Thread Rules:
1. Remember, this is a marketplace so posts should reflect that. Shop, socialize, etc. as you would while at market.
2. Red BF0000 is reserved for the lædenmanger
3. Please post your location at the top of your post - Pen and Ink, Streets, etc. so others know where you are.
4. If a shop is listed as FOR SALE, feel free to RP there being a shopkeeper there, within reason. If a shop has an owner, please wait for them to acknowledge you, do not godmode them.
5. HAVE FUN!

Luisa of Pelargir, a good many years ago now
(Tying in with THIS POST >> Jewellers Shop

It was in the very moment that she handed the ring over, that she started to regret it. Always that was the way of it; that a thing only mattered once it was lost, even if it had been willingly surrendered. And a wild part of her heart whispered for her to reach out and grasp it back. Instead she glanced down to the hand which the Rohir jeweller had weighted with no small amount of coins. As though she might manage to balance the measure of the loss with a different sort of gain.

She had no real comprehension what the ring might be worth, to a stranger, or what quality this foreign mintage might mean. The given piece of jewellery had been a gift, long ago, in a place now far away. And in the moment that tears threaten to overcome her resolve, Luisa closed her fingers about her meagre prize, and fled from the scene as though she were the sort of criminal who sold somebody else’s goods.

In one manner of speaking, the woman who had accepted that ring, in an exchange of vows, had been completely separate to the woman that she was now. The former would never have believed the latter, if she had tried to warn her how it would all turn out. But though the sun rose and set in an endless cycle, it could not rotate it’s motions from the present to the past. The future was all that she could concern about now. And this .. this act would see that she could eat this night. That was as far as she was willing to think upon, in any direction of time’s passing.

Unalmis and Addhor Raxelilta, a good many years later.
Exploring with Hattie >> Jewellers shop. (Tying in with THIS POST )

Wooden buildings served instead of the hard white walls he was accustomed to, still there was no denying that this was a marketplace. The conversations may have sounded in a foreign tongue but still they were the same. Vendors advertising their wares, customers haggling over prices, friends and acquaintances coming across one another and exchanging news ... the scene was as familiar as it was different.

Trusting Hattie without any sort of leash had been a dangerous decision. The dog was swiftly overwhelmed by so many sounds and smells, the fresh foods as much of an allure as the delighted faces of hands she took it into her head to lick. Unalmis had swiftly understood that she was not going to sit and wait patiently while his father carried out his mission. There were no books to be bought upon the subject he was investigating, the sorts of projects he wished to undertake. So speaking with everyone and anyone who was possessed of an opinion had turned out to be the play of the day. Duinion and Eryn had wisely taken themselves off on a private engagement for the day and eventually Unalmis had left his parent sat amongst a group of accommodating experience. All the better to take in the ambience of the riddermarket.

When he returned to where he'd left his father, Addhor was no longer there. The crowd of conversationalists had dispersed. But it was no chore to seek out the only other Gondorian, particularly with a clever dog to assist him. Witnessing his father outside of the ordinary was a thing the young Ranger had started to get used to, during their vacation. But still he never would have expected to find his parent in what looked like a jewellery store ! Pondering over a collection of rings that the seller was extolling the virtues of. It seemed one in particular had caught his father's eye.

That particular ring looked suspiciously like his mother's wedding band, or so Addhor had convinced himself. The one he had eventually given to Luisa in turn. He had not been looking for her, or it, but fate had introduced an encouraging vendor to bring it to his attention as he sought to locate his errant son, and now he could not help but be convinced. Could it be .. in fact .. the very same ? But .. Luisa had taken it with her when she walked out on them, years before ! Serenda had suggested that her best friend might have written some letters from here. Her best friend, .. Addhor's wife .. Or former wife, that was. The man's mother had personally made the necessary pleas up at Civil Hall back home, before the abandoned husband had ever properly been back on his feet. Their ill-fated marriage was long over, as short as it had ever been. With only their son really to show for it.

For all the wonders of chance that a certain far more famous ring had turned up, this was still uncanny. Could this truly be the same ring ? Did that mean Luisa might in fact be here still ? Addhor had never quite expected it could be so. And now was so astounded and surprised that he had made some (vague as he could manage) enquiries, before purchasing the small item. He was so taken aback by even the possibility that he did not observe his son’s arrival until a glance down found Hattie wetting his hand.

"Do you want to tell me something ?" Nal asked, in lieu of a more traditional greeting. "Who are you buying that for ?" The son narrowed brown eyes and was met by a lack of great reaction. If there were ever a cause to downplay a circumstance, it was this. Addhor and Nell were still early days and he certainly didn't want to overstep there and frighten her off. He had not even really mentioned that to his son yet .. And this was probably not the best situation to provoke that. Still for some reason he could not explain, the elder man completed his unexpected transaction and then began to share with his son an account of what he'd learnt from the local carpenter and other traders here, which timbers and tools frequented in Rohan rather than Gondor ... until Unalmis was left to wonder if his father had misunderstood his question. Not an entirely implausible turn of events while exploring a foreign land, except that his parent was the most equipped person at hand to comprehend his mutual language. He never obtained a satisfying answer and chalked it up to his parent having something to hide.

They never spoke about his mother unless they could help it. And raising the possibility that she might have been here .. the evidence that suggested she'd hawked their family heirloom ... for whatever reason she did anything .. was a matter likely to derail the rest of their holiday. So when they later each spoke of the riddermarket to the remainder of their travelling company, neither Addhor or Unalmis would deviate from telling about the marvels of the stalls and stores. Without ever mentioning the ring. As though it was as great a secret for them each to contemplate in private as the One Ring which had changed the fate of their entire world ..

NPC Bill the Pony and Ethelwen, mother of Háma

Life had been pretty boring lately. Ever since little Háma wasn't so little anymore, Bill felt lonely. He used to be Háma's best friend, and he had been so patient in teaching the little boy how to ride. They'd been on long rides through the country, together with Háma's father. They'd slept in the stable together, and laid in the field on summer days. Háma had brought him apples, carrots and other good stuff.
But those days were gone. Háma was a big boy now. Practically a young man. And he was too big to ride a pony. Had a horse of his own now. And Bill... well, he was still in his stable, and in the field at summer. But no longer playing with his big friend.
It just wasn't fair, he thought. And so when this morning somebody left the stable door open, he decided to go on an adventure of his own. There was a smell of apples in the air...

At the Market

Many a man and woman from Rohan was out in the Market today. Bill followed his nose and tried not to push little children or carts full of groceries. He also tried to ignore the cries of some, who wondered what a pony on his own was doing on the Market.
But no matter how hard he searched, there were no apples to be found. No carrots either. Still following his nose, he ended up in front of an empty shop, where one last dried apple was laying in a corner. 'For sale' it said. Bill neighed and shook his head. More bad luck this was...
Behind him, a familiar voice was calling: ''Bill! What on Arda are you doing here!'
Well. It seemed he was caught now. Slightly expecting an angry voice, Bill pricked up his ears. But instead of scolding, he felt a soft hand on his neck.
'Ah, dear Bill... Were you out on your own, today? You miss the vegetable and fruit shop just as much as I do, don't you? But guess what! I came here with a mission, just like you did. Now that Borland is no longer riding out with the other Rohirrim, with that hurt leg of his, we've decided to grow more vegetables and fruits than just what we need for ourselves. We'll need more income anyway from other sources now.'
Bill looked up in wonder, at Háma's mother Ethelwen. What was she saying?
'Let's see if we can find the Headmaster of this Market. This shop here is no longer for sale!'

Gléowyn
Bits and Pieces, tack shop
(Open)

The smell of leather greeted her the moment Gléowyn entered the shop. She paused and took a deep breath, a little smile breaking out on her young face as she stepped in and began wandering down the aisle. Pushing her hat back so that it hung down her back by the string attached, Gléowyn stopped to admire the tooling on a saddle, but upon seeing the price of it, she ventured on to look at bridles instead.

It wasn't often that she got to venture into the market. Her family lived somewhat far out in the East Emnet, so they only made periodic trips into the larger cities to get what they couldn't get more locally. And Gléowyn had seldom had a chance to visit any shops on her own. Up until recently, her big sister had always been around, so her mother and father always sent the sisters together in pairs. But now, her sister had gone off on her own, and finally, just after her sixteenth birthday, Gléowyn was getting a small taste of her own independence.

The girl took a moment to let her gaze linger on some fancy bridles before turning to look at the halters, instead. She let out a tiny scoff, amused by the fact that some people actually bought those, instead of making them themselves. Gléowyn shook her head with a tiny smile lingering on her lips, and ventured on to the aisle where she found the tools for upkeep of gear. Yes, that was more what she was coming for. Leather oils and waxes, saddle soap and clothes, waxed threads and needles and so on. She picked up a few things as she went, checking off every item in her mental list, while also keeping up with how much it was going to add up, since her parents had only given her so much spending money.
I'm looking for someone to share in an Adventure
