I believe it is well-known that some of Tolkien's inspiration for Middle-Earth comes from the beloved countryside and landscapes of England.
Now, I believe none can presume to know what Tolkien "would have thought" about anything, and only those who knew him best could accurately speculate. However, considering Tolkien's inspiration, I wonder if we can speculate whether Tolkien would be disappointed the adaptions were filmed in New Zealand rather than England? Or, if you don't want to speculate about what Tolkien might have thought, perhaps, weigh in on what you think about the choice of film location?
Of course, I do not mean to undercut the magnificence of New Zealand in anyway; the country and the locations filmed are beyond words. It's beautiful, sublime, fantastic. However, I do wonder why at least some of England wasn't used as a set location. Especially, since Tolkien wanted Middle Earth to be a modern mythology of England. The rolling hills of England would have made a beautiful Hobbiton. Although, the spot they found in NZ was perfect too!
