@Karis Ziranphel

"Yes, she did," he smiled. Looking at the targets, he tilted his head with respect. "Cúner Ziranphel, indeed. That is stellar marksmanship." He had seen her skill in person before, of course. He had recommended her earning the specialization to Amathen as early as after their first encounter on their mission to the crossing of the Poros.

At her question, he tilted his head in feigned thought. His answer was not long in coming. "The farther targets," he said quietly, "are where I would like to begin." He took a few steps in that very direction. "I do not think the moving ones will quite move me, today." He hadn't wielded his bow for such a long time; and while he had carefully maintained the strength of his muscles during captivity, he was unsure of what his aim had become. He had never gone this long without shooting arrows, not even during his downward spiral after Mellaurel's death.

"I suggest you retrieve your arrows, then, and take your break. Meanwhile I can stretch my arm," he said, using the latter as a euphemism to mean practice. She was free to watch, as far as he was concerned. Although he did not verbalize it, he gave her a friendly look and nod - which served as an open invitation. His eyes lingered just a heartbeat too long, before he resumed his path to the unmoving targets, and chose the second-farthest removed target. How much would muscle memory serve him? Was shooting his bow a skill that did not easily deteriorate?

Obviously, he had inspected his bow earlier that day, checking for cracks and tying a new bowstring. He also knew what he should be particularly mindful of; since it had been so long, he would need to mind not to lean back while shooting. And he would have to test whether his exercises at the dungeons had truly not reduced the weight he could draw. Pulling too much weight before his muscles were up to the task, could lead to injury or bad posture, and Macardil was looking for neither.

He came to a stop and looked at the target with a momentary flash of disbelief that he was here. Then he took his stance: his feet shoulder width apart, his left foot forward and his body angled to the right. He reached for an arrow from his quiver and nocked it on his longbow. He drew back his bowstring with a relaxed hand, drawing from the elbow and not the hand, until he reached his anchor point, and the disbelief and his muted nerves faded into nothingness as the calm that accompanied shooting his bow settled over him like a warm blanket in winter.

For a man to whom control was everything, he let go of control in a way when it came to archery. Aiming, to him, was not about control. It was about instinct. It was how he had been taught: "You don't look at the rock when you throw it at something," the instructor his father had hired used to say. "You look at your target." Many shot their bow with one eye closed. Macardil shot his with both eyes open. He kept the arrow in a straight line under his dominant right eye, of course, but he kept both eyes open as he looked at the target he wanted to hit. The tip and length of the arrow only in his peripheral vision, he imagined the arrow continuing to the target, accounted for the distance, waiting for the slight breeze to go down that sometimes made strands of his hair lift from his forehead, and released.

The arrow hit and he repeated the proces a second time, a third time, a fourth time - in rapid succession. Then he lowered his right arm to his side and a sincere, joyful laugh escaped him.

Training Recruit Trastion Leithor

@Rillewen

Arnyn was pleased she did not have to repeat herself about walking next to her. She noted th egrin on his face when he saw the training weapons - really, the grin was hard to miss. Was he that excited to start learning swordplay? It didn't seem like a grin of anticipation to her. Pleased that he had been right that there would be training weapons?

She watched carefully but not obviously as Trastion gripped the wooden sword and glanced down the length of it. It was not a curious or apprehensive glance, as she might expect from someone with no prior sword skills. It seemed... like he was assessing the training weapon. A tinge of suspicion started nibbling at the edges of her mind when next she saw him twirling the weapon in his hand. It was a brief twirl, yes. And you didn't need any fighting experience to twirl a blade. But there was something about his bearing, something about his attitude when he held that practice weapon. It didn't fit with a nineteen year old who had no skills to speak of, as Pele had informed her.
Besides - Arnyn had already seen that Trastion balance skills and more strength in his fingers, hands and arms than would be expected. Either Trastion had downplayed his abilities because he thought they were not sufficient enough for a Ranger... or ... he had intentionally misrepresented himself.

Arnyn was someone who liked to give people the benefit of the doubt. However, it was not lost on her that he did not answer her first question about whether or not he had experience, instead focusing on her second question. That would teach her to ask a double question, she thought with a wry smile.
"Wooden swords?" she frowned. "Did your brother make them?" Perhaps Trastion was simply referring to sticks, but his earlier grin and look at the wooden practice blade belied that completely. Families with an abundance of wooden swords were... rare. Unless they were well-off. Yet Trastion was so young and had already worked as a lumberjack and at a quarry.

Curiouser and curiouser.

The Hyandaner took of the halberd straps that kept her longsword on her back, and placed it next to the training weapons. She selected a wooden training sword with a similar hilt and blade length as her longsword.

She assumed a stance with her left foot forward and right foot back, both legs bent at the knee, the sword tip pointing up, the pommel down, the blade angling slightly backwards. She had gripped the handle underneath the wooden crossguard with her right hand and held what passed for the pommel with her off-hand. The crossguard was just below shoulder-height, the blade itself between her center and the point of her right shoulder.

"Show me what you learned from those pretend duels and battles, Recruit," she ordered.

"Make them?" He laughed lightly. "No, I meant sticks. Growing up in a forest, there was an abundance of them, so it was easy to find some that was about the right length for a pretend sword. Or spear. Sometimes a curved one served as a 'bow', that sort of thing." He shrugged, realizing that it could have sounded like they had a lot of actual wooden swords, which was not what he'd intended to say. "These are definitely nicer than those." He would have to be more careful about what he said, Trastion realized. If he slipped up and someone started to get curious, they might connect him with a certain family he didn't want to be connected with.

"Show me what you learned from those pretend duels and battles, Recruit," His trainer instructed, having already assumed her stance.

Trastion paused, taking a moment while his mind raced, scrambling to remember everything he used to know. It had been a few years since he and his brother used to spar, and longer still since they played around with sticks. He hadn't put much thought toward fighting in the last couple of years, as it wasn't needed.

Given her stance, he considered the options, at first trying to remember the things his old instructor would've told him. He could do an overhead attack, but she'd likely use a hanging block, then counter. He could bring his blade down to the ground and swing up at an angle into a rising cut, or he could mirror her stance and swing across.. or stab toward her torso... a few possibilities flashed through his mind. Then, thinking a little deeper, he recalled his own thoughts about being more careful, lest anyone begin to suspect his true origins, but he couldn't think of what a person with no experience would do in such a situation.

After a few second's thought, he swung his blade toward her right side, at rib level, knowing, or at least expecting, that she'd be able to easily block the attack, given the stance she was in. He figured she'd have a few options for a counterattack, and guessed that if she was as experienced as he figured, she would almost certainly block and counter, but he didn't know how she would do it. So he didn't plan too far ahead, figuring he'd wing it and hope his reflexes were fast enough for it.

She waited, watching Pele as she moved into a stance. Once Pele's sword was pointing up, Arnyn assumed the Captain's stance was complete. Even though Pele didn't leave a second in between adopting her stance and swinging her sword, the action didn't startle her.

The Hyandaner didn't wait a moment longer and maintained her right foot forward and left foot backward stance. Her response was in raising her hands, bringing the hilt up and the tip down. She had spent years with other seasoned Rangers to perfect her sword style, specializing in efficiency and - thus - quick finishes. By bringing up her blade as she did, she knew she should be able to catch the middle of Pele's sword while it was still above her head - and to block it with the part of her own blade that was right next to the crossguard, catching it in place momentarily with the crossguard as well.

The new angle she'd created, with the tip pointing down, would have caused an enemy to run their neck right into the tip. If - of course - they really committed to the attack. Which they usually always would.

Since this wasn't an actual situation where she wanted to kill, however, Arnyn had pointed the tip down more than she would otherwise, so it would point at the top of Pele's chainmail-and-leather-covered chest.

Training Recruit Trastion Leithor

@Rillewen

She never went all out on new trainees, unless they proved they were already proficient with the sword. Or when they were behaving arrogantly. Or when she felt like they needed to learn and respect her a bit more. In her mind, Trastion hadn't behaved arrogantly, nor did he need to be put in his place. She would need to teach him a lesson about his armor at some point, but she still needed to learn where he was at, now.

She didn't parry. She didn't block. She simply... stepped back and off to the side, evading the swing.
And then she stilled, still in the same stance.

And... if he wasn't offering up the truth about his skills... getting him frustrated just might make him want to prove himself even more.

"Try again," she encouraged him in a friendly tone.

He should have seen that coming. Trastion could have laughed at the simplicity of her evasive action, and his own failure to anticipate it. He held back a grin, however, though a little sparkle of amusement showed in his eyes. Try again, she said. Alright, he'd try another, while trying to keep in mind not to strike too forcefully, not knowing how much force these wooden swords could take without breaking. One shouldn't be too hard on the equipment, he'd always been taught.

Furthermore, although he was counting on her having the agility and reflexes to either dodge or block the attack, he didn't want to hurt the woman if she didn't, so he was careful not to put his whole strength into it as he quickly swung the blade in a backslashing motion, at the same level as the first had been. This time expecting that she might try the same move, he would follow up his attack with a swift stab/lunge toward the torso if she didn't do anything to stop him. After a few years without any practice, he wasn't sure how good his control was, and to be totally honest, he'd never been the best at that. Of course he never had bothered to stop his attacks short, whenever he had sparred with that arrogant stepbrother of his... it had always been quite satisfying to land an attack on him at full force. And then say it was accidental. But this was not his stepbrother and he wouldn't find it so funny, if he caused her any injury.

"Please let me know if I need to lighten up, or anything else," He spoke up, still worried about that. "I don't want to break these things..." Or hurt her, he added mentally. Of course, she was wearing armor, he reminded himself, but his concerns still stood. "I'm not sure how much these things can take," he glanced at the wooden sword, unsure how old it might be, nor how much training it had already been used for over the years.

The backhand swing was easy to see coming, and since he hadn't closed the entire distance she'd created earlier by stepping back (you did not specify, so I might assume he closed none of the distance, but let's give him a small step forward anyway), she leaned back so the tip of his blade cleared her. She moved her sword down to hit his own farther away from her - hard - thus forcing it along the path it had already been traveling, off to her left.

As she hit his sword away from her, Arnyn's right foot moved forward, and she used her two hands on the wooden handle to turn the sword: she returned the wooden 'blade' toward her, turned it upward by the time it got to her left shoulder and completed the move by bringing the practice sword back down in the same fluid motion, aiming for Trastion's right shoulder while the recruit would still be caught off guard by her earlier move to use his own momentum and push him farther off the mark.

If her blow struck, which was highly probable given the circumstances, it would not be pleasant for Trastion. She hadn't hit him as she would an actual enemy, of course, but she had hit him as she would hit as if he were wearing appropriate gear.

Arnyn narrowed her eyes slightly. "I would worry more about yourself instead of the weapons. If they break, they break. And whereas I am wearing armor, you are not. We will, however, continue this session as if you were, since you were expected to and I am a proponent of natural consequences."

The strike to his sword surprised him slightly, although he was trying to anticipate some sort of block. But her next move was so swift that he didn't realize what was coming until it was too late. His shoulder, already angry at him for the push-ups earlier, received a sharp blow that he hadn't managed to block or evade. The first, natural response was to clamp a hand over the throbbing spot, but he resisted the urge, gritting his teeth as he fought to not show that it hurt. His hands gripped the handle of the practice sword tighter, instead. It was his own stupid fault, after all, making assumptions and not checking with anyone about what he ought to bring. And he was definitely rusty, he noted to himself. Not too unexpected, after not putting any thought toward a sword or any other weapon, over the last couple of years.

"Right," He nodded in reply to her words, focusing on ignoring the pain. He'd taken worse blows in the past, though it had been a while since those days. So, going from Arnyn's response, he guessed he needn't worry about how hard he struck with these wooden swords, so that was one less thing to have to be mindful about. Preparing for another attack, he started with the blade pointing to the ground on his right side, with his left foot forward. Swinging the blade upward in what appeared would be a rising cut toward her body, sliding forward and to his left as his sword moved upward, Trastion faked the first attack, and instead brought his sword swiftly up and around to swing horizontally at her right shoulder, thinking he might catch her off guard while she was expecting the other attack.

Perhaps the slower approach stole any moment of surprise Pele’s attack might have possessed, yet it also gave her a couple precious moments to notice Arnyn’s very effective move and do something to avoid getting ‘killed’ right away.

Halting her forward movement and with a small adjustment of her wrists, she attempted to correct the position of her sword to see if she could catch Arnyn’s blade more towards the middle rather than the crossguard and applied sideways pressure to move their weapons to her right.

At the same time, Pele did her best to get out of the way of the sword point should her sword adjustment not work sufficiently, or if Arnyn would push it any further. While her arms pushed the weapons to her right, she took a step left with her left foot and followed up with her right foot placing it behind her left at an angle, moving much of her body weight back onto it.

Then she worked to disengage her sword from this particular collision so she could switch into a guarded position, similar to Arnyn’s, to bring the hilt down to her hip and point of the sword up.

Ranger Recruit Romeran
Studying under Captain Pele
@Pele Alarion

There was an immediate sense of relief when the captain did not pursue the attack any further and called a halt to the first sparring session by putting her sword under her arm. Romeran likewise stood up straight and copied with his own sword. His leg still stung and he was sure there would be a bruise there tomorrow but he made now show of pain or discomfort. The best lessons were those learned quickly and painfully but without serious injury. Romeran nodded his head at the captain's critique "There's a lot to try and pay attention to at once" he said in agreement. It would take a great deal more practice and sparring for such a level of awareness.

At least he had is strength he supposed and the captain was aware of that. He shrugged and smiled at her apology "It didn't hurt much" he lied. Her comment about agility however had him concerned. What exactly did she mean by that? Luckily (or perhaps unluckily for Romeran) he would find out very soon. A balance beam. Romeran wasn't even sure he knew exactly what that meant, it wasn't something which came up when farming, but he imagined from the sound of it that it was fighting on some sort of log. Romeran and his childhood friend had playfully fought with sticks on logs in the woods as children, with Romeran mostly losing these tests of agility, so he wasn't excited at the prospect but it hardly felt like he could say no.

"I think it might be me who is doing the falling..." he said in an attempt to lower expectations "but I'm here to learn after all right?" he asked rhetorically and looked around for where the balance beam was located. He looked over to the captain. "I'm afraid you'll have to lead the way" he said in confession having not yet spent much time in the training grounds where the rangers sparred.

@Rillewen

She'd assumed a middle guard, her right foot forward, the hilt of her longsword off to the side in front of her left hip joint, and was stepping back with her right foot as he stepped forward and left to bring his sword up in that seeming upward cut - Arnyn wanted to see what Trastion would do, instead of countering his attack right away again. Her dark eyes widened minutely when she recognized the wrist movement and she saw the change in the motion of his blade, but her stepping back with her right foot had already been repositioning her blade to her right side instead of her left, so that worked to her advantage.

She blocked his weapon as it came for her shoulder, his attack horizontal, her block almost vertical. Arnyn pushed her training weapon against his, testing his strength a bit. Meanwhile, she spoke in a low tone of voice. "Trastion Leithor, there are things you are not telling me." There was simply no way someone with his alleged experience could pull off a move like that the way he just had.

Pele's response was good, and while not at all surprising that Pele had the technique to react in such a way, Arnyn hadn't been sure Pele would have the speed and presence of mind to foil her counter and reset effectively.

Stepping back into her previous position as well, almost mirroring Pele, Arnyn smiled. "Yes!" she exclaimed with happy approval. "I am glad to see your speed has improved greatly, even if your sleep may not have." Her smile softened. "Not yet, at least. Perhaps it will improve if we physically tire you enough?" she suggested, her eyes twinkling for a moment, although she quickly turned more serious again. "Or does that not change anything?" Sleep shortages could really mess with someone, so she wasn't happy to hear this was still such a problem.

Arnyn also wondered why exactly Pele had been assigned a guard. She knew the general circumstance, yes, but whether or not something specific had happened to cause this change to go into effect, she wasn't sure.

Recruit Trastion Leithor

"Trastion Leithor, there are things you are not telling me."

For a moment, Trastion had been feeling somewhat pleased with himself for pulling off that tricky move, after so long without practice... until those words hit him, and he realized he'd made a mistake. He froze for a second. Mentally cursing himself for getting carried away, he lowered his training sword and stepped back, hesitating, thinking swiftly as he adopted a questioning expression. "I don't know what you mean," He felt a twinge of guilt for that little lie. Still, if it got out that he'd had formal training, it might raise other questions, which might somehow reach the ears of others who would come to investigate... and he couldn't let that happen.

Turning his attention to the wooden sword in his hand, he pretended to be checking it for any damage after having struck it against hers a couple of times... as if worried it might have dented, though he knew it wasn't likely to. But he found it difficult to look at her as he spoke, and found it easier to find something else to focus his gaze onto. "I told you... my brother and I used to have a lot of play duels..." He shrugged, trying to act nonchalant about it, despite feeling a little nervous. She wasn't going to buy that alone, though, and he knew it. "You're right though... I did leave out a little bit." He admitted quietly. "A few of the men that we knew growing up had some experience with swords," He added, still focused on the sword. "They taught us a few things... but I didn't think it was worth mentioning. It's been a long time since then." He hesitated a moment before looking up, hoping she'd accept that explanation. "I'm sorry if what I said seemed... misleading."

Avoiding Arnyn’s pointed sword had not come effortlessly, and Pele responded to her friend’s comment: “It has not been easy training while my body and mind scream for more sleep most days, but it might have helped.” She shifted her weight forward slightly to balance it equally instead of it mostly being on her back leg.

“Sometimes physical weariness helps, and sometimes it just chases the sleep right off when I overdo it. I think there is still quite a lot of fear that I haven’t handled properly or simply have suppressed because… facing it hurts. It sort of messes with everything,” she tried to explain as best she could. Pele was silent for a few moments, but did not initiate another attack just yet, though her body tensed as if she was about to strike.

“And then again I feel like I’ve taken on too many responsibilities too soon, though they are a convenient excuse to say that I am too busy to handle my personal issues,” she admitted, and then regarded Arnyn with a small tilt of her head thoughtfully. “I think you could help me with this…”

“If you agreed to the position of a second-in-command,” Pele finished her sentence as she moved, stepping forward with her right foot and adjusting the angle of the left, as she aimed a thrust towards Arnyn’s chest.

“Yes, you can end up in big trouble if you focus only on the obvious movements of your opponent’s sword,” Pele commented some more on their sparring and chuckled lightly. “But you already saw that.”

She headed for the area with logs of various shapes and heights, and considered what Romeran had said about him falling. “Agility is not one of your top skills then,” she assumed, and she could see that it might be so. He was big, and it might not be easy for him to balance himself or keep up with quick and changing movements of opponents. Pele wanted to see how true that was, and how much improvement could be made.

She stopped for a moment at a round log fastened to two vertical posts with short chains and glanced at Romeran with a grin to see his reaction to a possibility of attempting to stand on this, let alone fight effectively. Then she moved on to a low rectangular beam which was firmly secured about a foot above the ground.

“Come, let’s see if you can handle this,” Pele challenged, and jumped lightly on the beam, and then turned around, placing her right foot forward fully on the beam and her left foot back, perpendicular to it. Resting the hilt of her sword on the inside of her right hip, she lowered the point of the weapon to look relatively harmless, as she waited for Romeran to find his position on the beam.

@Rillewen

"I don't know what you mean."
Trastion's words sounded evasive.

Arnyn frowned at that statement. Either he was a bit slow, or he was lying. She would prefer the former, honestly. Trastion was inspecting his training sword as he continued. Arnyn took a step back and lowered her own weapon slowly, carefully evaluating his facial expression.

"I told you... my brother and I used to have a lot of play duels..."

That did not explain a move like that to her. At all. And it seemed like he realized as much, for Trastion went on to provide a more believable explanation:

"A few of the men that we knew growing up had some experience with swords. They taught us a few things... but I didn't think it was worth mentioning. It's been a long time since then."

Arnyn narrowed her eyes slightly in thought. Anyone experienced in the sword would never start their teachings with a move like that. And Trastion wouldn't have been able to learn a move like that without prior education. Plus, to have retained the muscle memory for this long.. He said they had taught him 'growing up'. So before his work with lumber and the quarry.

Trastion finally looked at her again. "I'm sorry if what I said seemed... misleading."

She left a moment of silence as she gauged his expression. "I said the Captain told me you had no experience in this, and asked you if you and your brother perhaps had played at swordfighting. You said that you and your brother had pretend duels and battles. You mentioned no other instruction." She paused for a few heartbeats. "Either I have not yet made it clear enough that you are to be precise in your answers to my questions... or I did make my point clear but you intentionally chose not to answer in full."

Arnyn slanted her head, looking him straight in the eyes. "I understand that respect for my position as your instructor has to be earned, Trastion, and I would not ask of you to blindly give it to me from the start while you know nothing about me." She slowly gestured between them. "But earning respect goes both ways. And at present, I fear you are not gaining mine." It was clear that she was displeased, but more than that she seemed... regretful.

"Tell me, please: what would you do if you were in my position right now? If you were the instructor and your trainee was doing what you are doing?" Her tone suggested it was a genuine question, not some sort of trap, and that she was open to considering his answer as an actual option.

It saddened Arnyn to hear Pele speak of fear that had yet to be processed. She so wanted for her friend to overcome this and to beat the memories and the fear, but unfortunately she did not know what else to do rather than offer to listen, talk, show Pele she had people who loved and believed in her, and help with what Pele asked of her - of which these training sessions were an example.

Pele's posture changed a bit then. Arnyn recognized the prelude to an attack, and prepared.

When Pele said she sometimes felt she'd taken on too much too soon, and indicated that her duties did come in handy to justify to herself she had too much on her plate to face her demons, Arnyn grumbled mentally. Facing what haunted her should be one of her friend's priorities in Arnyn's mind, but there was only so much she could say to try and help Pele to realize the same...

Arnyn moved without needing to think about it. As Pele started uttering her last sentence and stepped forward with her right foot and started her thrust, Arnyn moved her right foot diagonally forward to the right, and brought her sword up from her middle guard to meet with Pele's - flat to flat. The thumb of Arnyn's right hand moved onto the very beginning of the flat of her blade, so she had a thumb grip on her sword.

As Pele moved into the thrust for Arnyn's chest, the Hyandander pushed their blades to her left side with the edge of her sword against the flat side of Pele's. Arnyn brought her own blade up to her upper left side (bringing her left elbow up to just above her left shoulder), as the thumb of her right hand supported the blade from below in the half circle movement.

From this point, Arnyn was perfectly lined up for a thrust of her own, but it was then that Pele's sentence had come to an end and registered in Arnyn's mind, which caused her to freeze with her sword still binding Pele's and pointing at her chest.

"Wait - what?" Arnyn asked, sounding rather perlexed.

While Pele had been able to escape the previous attack, this time her sword was pushed way off leaving her wide open to attacks. She was too forward to jump away, and she did not see a way to recover her sword this quickly. Frowning and half-closing her eyes she expected the imminent impact of the sword tip against her chest, yet it did not happen. As she looked back at Arnyn questioningly, a small chuckle escaped her at the look of confusion on her friend's face.

"What - what?" she laughed softly. "Wanna be my right hand? Officially?" Pele then repeated the question in a different way. And since she was not poked with sharp objects yet, she pushed her blade off Arnyn's slightly and rotated her wrists to the minimum necessary to bring her sword under Arnyn's blade and raised arm, aiming a quick and short cut for her unprotected torso.

Pele continued with the reasoning behind her question, then: "Seriously though, Arnyn. You have experience. You know my strengths and weaknesses, and secrets. And I trust you..." She figured she should let her friend think on this, so she stopped talking to see what response would follow.

Hyandaner Arnyn Dealedwen
Sparring with Captain Pele Alarion

She hadn't heard wrong then. Arnyn lowered her left elbow, turning her wrists with the movement and forced her sword blade to her right to misdirect Pele's cut - stepping back in the process, so the cut wouldn't actually hit her if she proved just a second too late. Pele's attack missed just by half an inch, less perhaps. Not something she would ordinarily be pleased with, but... it was what it was. Pele had successfully distracted her.

After bringing the swords down, the Hyandaner left the tip of her blade on the ground. As the Captain explained why she made such an offer, Arnyn eyed her friend carefully.
Arnyn knew she was not the only one with leadership experience, not at all - and she was not the only one who stood close to Pele. Yet perhaps... she was the only one to combine the two? Even as she started going over the different Rangers in her mind, she stopped herself. It was a pointless exercise. Pele had given her the reasons, and Arnyn could not deny the truth of them: she did have experience, and she was the one Pele had trusted to evaluate her, test her, train with her... the one Pele had finally trusted with details she hadn't likely entrusted to others.

"Pele..." Arnyn's dark eyes were doubtful for a moment. "I'm not sure what to say." Drawing a deep breath, Arnyn gave her friend and Captain an almost discomfitted smile. "I won't lie - I have been wondering when you would appoint someone at last and stop doing everything on your own. I've wanted you to choose someone so you could entrust them with your worries and share your burdens. But I did not expect that someone to be me."
She was slightly worried about how it would look. Everyone knew they were friends, and Arnyn wouldn't appreciate anyone assuming she'd been promoted through nepotism. Then again, Pele was friendly with nearly everyone, was she not?

Arnyn remembered then, what she had told Pele upon helping her move her things to her new room. How she had wanted to support her friend, and how she wanted to do that still. And as Pele's right hand... she could keep a closer eye on what happened around Pele, as well. Perhaps even be of help against this Relic...

"Months ago," Arnyn finally continued, "I told you that you can count on me. That I am here, for whatever you need." She paused, nodding. "I stand by those words." A faint smile touched her face. "Captain Alarion."

Sparring with Hyandaner Arnyn Dealedwen

@Arnyn

The merry spark still lingered in her eyes, as Pele found that the unexpected offer had distracted Arnyn enough to have something that might be considered a successful attack. She did not apply any counterpressure when her friend brought their swords down, and also left it pointing downwards instead of pressing another attack. Even though she was still watchful, Pele let herself relax, while she waited and listened to Arnyn’s reply.

“I do think that I need your help with… stuff, no matter how much I might have tried to convince myself that I can do everything myself,” she admitted as she took half a step back, still holding her sword down in a relaxed way.

“I keep running from myself by taking on more duties, and I believe that you might have what it takes to help me stop this endless cycle since I’ve shared with you what others might not know. So that Rangers – and Gondor – would receive the best they deserve, and I would not drive myself towards destruction,” she said, expanding on what reasoning she had provided.

Her eyes lit up with renewed hope, just as she adjusted her grip on the sword. “So a yes it is, right?” Pele asked just to make sure, and observed Arnyn, wondering whether they should still continue with the current sparring or move on to something else.

Ranger Recruit Romeran
Studying under Captain Pele
@Pele Alarion

As they were walking towards the next training area, Romeran could already spy the training logs (or balancing beams he supposed) which captain Pele likely was referring to. This was going to be difficult, he thought and his heart sank a little.

"Yes you could say that" he said in response to the comment about agility "I can't say that it came up too often during farm work. Mostly strength and endurance as you might expect" there was very little delicate work on the farm, at least that Romeran was involved in and given his size there was always more grunt work for him to do.

The training ground was a lot larger than Romeran had initially expected. Perhaps he was realizing just how much different areas there were for different training approaches. The likes of things he had never seen before and could still only hesitate a guess as to what they all did. When they arrived at the balance beams which he had already seen coming, Romeran gulped. It was higher and narrower than he had expected, it reminded him of the sorts of logs he was apt to fall off during his childhood playing with sticks as swords.

The captain, naturally, leaped from the shorter beam to the taller beam as elegantly as he could only have expected. This didn't make Romeran feel any better as he stepped onto the shorter beam. For a moment he hesitated trying to decide how exactly he was going to get onto the taller beam. The captain had jumped and while trying to hoist himself onto the bar with his arms would likely be the easier route, he thought that perhaps would be embarrassing.

In a nervous leap, Romeran managed to get his feet up above the beam and landed, not quite as gracefully as the captain. He swung his arms out violently in circles to balance himself. The additional weight of the sword almost threw Romeran off as he was unused to balancing himself in such a fashion with a sword in his hand. Luckily, he was able to stop himself from wobbling and didn't fall. He paused and took a deep breath before looking up at the captain.

Flicking his eyes down at her feet, Romeran decided to copy, although it seemed naturally enough and placed his left foot back, perpendicular to the beam and right foot forward. Instead of a low guard, Romeran kept his hands close to his hips on the hilt of the sword but the point of the blade aimed up pointing towards captain Pele's face.

Recruit Trastion Leithor
Sparring area

Risking a glance up at the ranger who was here to train him, Trastion felt his heart sink. The expression on Hyandaner Arnyn's face seemed to tell him all he needed to know. She was disappointed in him. Just like everyone else. Like his mother, especially. He couldn't remember her ever having a positive thing to say about him, or anything he'd ever done. No matter how hard he tried to please her, it was never good enough. But this was different. This.. he brought onto himself. Trying so hard to protect his secret, he'd told a few too many untruths and now she probably despised him and thought him a liar. Maybe he'd made a mistake in coming to Minas Tirith, asking to join the rangers.. how could he think he could get through all the training and stuff required if he couldn't even be honest about who he was?

Staring down at the ground, Trastion's shoulders drooped, listening to Arnyn speak. Telling him, in a surprisingly polite way, that she had lost respect for him. He couldn't really blame her for that, but felt more and more miserable. 'Trouble', indeed.. he'd picked a very apt name for himself, at least, he thought wryly. Still, a mistake it may have been, but that didn't mean he was going to quit... besides, he'd made an oath, and he didn't take it lightly. He wanted to try and fix that mistake, if it wasn't too late... but how?

He remained silent for a long moment, thinking carefully about her words, and her question. What would he do? 'I don't know,' He kept thinking, struggling within himself to come up with some sort of answer. 'I don't know what to do,' Anxiety twisted up his insides, threatening to overwhelm him, a feeling he'd grown more and more familiar with, since learning a dangerous secret. The secret he'd been running from for the last couple of years... it was hard, having to hide.. having to worry about being found by those who wanted to kill him, carrying that burden around on his shoulders, all by himself. He just wanted to have someplace he belonged again, where he could sleep peacefully at night, without worrying about his stepfather finding him... and maybe even make some friends. He had hoped others would like him, but he was failing pretty badly, so far.

And Arnyn was still waiting for an answer, he reminded himself, swallowing down the lump in his throat. "I...would want to know why," He spoke at last, quietly. The answer came to him as he spoke, and was followed by a sigh. "But... I can't tell you.. I'm sorry, I..." He cleared his throat and looked up, expecting more frowns and disappointed looks. "I'm terrible at lying. I'm sorry I've not been honest about certain things, but.. I can't tell. Anyone. I... just don't know what else to do." As that last bit spilled out, he mentally cringed at it. He couldn't believe he'd blurted that much out. Letting out a shaky breath, he tried to regain his composure. He inhaled a deep breath slowly, struggling to try and get a grip back onto his emotions, fearing he might just crumble from all the figurative pressure he'd been enduring so long, and wondering how much he'd messed up now.

Hyandaner Arnyn Dealedwen
Training Recruit Trastion Leithor

@Rillewen

The light frown stayed on her face, but the regret and displeasure shifted more to concern. The young man in front of her seemed almost like he had sunk into himself. He seemed... at a loss. He had no clue of what to do. His words confirmed the same a mere moment later.

Arnyn took in a slow, deep breath as she gauged the recruit in front of her. He was looking at her, and seemed incredibly vulnerable. As if he might fall apart at any moment. Not that she thought he would, if he could help it. The Hyandaner took a moment to think, then took a few steps forward to put her free hand on Trastion's shoulder. The look in her eyes was almost gentle. He needed to calm down before anything else.

"Trastion. You may not yet know this... but you will learn, in time, if you stay with us."

She paused, trying to see if he was really hearing her, and hopefully wasn't too distracted by his own thoughts. "Being a Ranger does not just equal performing duties. Being a Ranger is being part of a team." She hesitated. "And for me, it has always been like being part of a family. A family you choose, not one you were born into. People you can count on. People you can trust - with your life. If you stay with us and if you commit yourself to your oath, sooner or later you will feel it." Speaking of it made a smile touch her eyes and light up her face. "We salute not fist-to-chest, as most would say. We salute fist-to-heart." She was smiling plainly now. "It is where the devotion comes from." She nodded at him. "I understand if you cannot bring yourself to trust me yet. But know that what you choose to tell me in confidence, today or any day, will stay with me, and me alone." She took another deep, slow breath, hoping her words were of some help.

Then she tilted her head. "Besides. My recruits don't spiral," she told him more quietly, but in a steady and confident voice that left no room for Trastion to doubt the truth of her words. "They rise. Regardless of past or current hardships. I make sure of it. I won't lie, it does help if they are honest with me. But we can wait on that, if you are not ready."

He quite expected a lot of scolding, especially having admitted that he'd lied, which he felt very guilty for doing. It was different here than working different jobs. He didn't have to try and hide how he knew how to cut down a tree, or climb up a rock face, before. But here, it had proven far too difficult to try and hide that he knew how to use a sword.. that he'd had training before. And then he'd gone and made the Hyandaner upset with him, and she'd probably send him away and never want to have anything to do with him again, and-

Her hand on his shoulder surprised him. The words she spoke next surprised him even further. Slowly raising his blue eyes to meet hers, he listened to all that she was saying. He couldn't speak, not for a bit. That lump had returned, and seemed to swell up so he didn't dare try and use his voice. A family. People you can count on, she said. That he could count on..with his life. She couldn't have known how much he wanted that very thing...longed for it... but it was hard to trust people he barely knew, especially after being betrayed by the man who had helped raised him from infancy, in the place of a father. Not that he'd ever been close with, or even liked, the man, but still... it hurt. It made it all the more difficult to feel safe trusting anyone.

Keeping his jaw clenched as he continued the inner battle against those pesky emotions that had gotten stirred up, Trastion rubbed a hand over his face, and nodded slightly, showing he heard what she said, that he was listening. For a few moments, he focused on taking slow, deep breaths, until he felt that he could maybe try speaking again. Letting the words absorb in, and taking the time to carefully think about that, and about what he could maybe share with her, without revealing anything too important.

"I've had training, before," He admitted quietly, after a little while. "But it was years ago, and I thought I'd be rusty. That... that's all I can tell you, I think." He frowned, looking down at the wooden sword. "But, the stuff I said about me and my brother playing sword duels with sticks...that was true. We did do that," He gave a faint smile, which faded. "Though, I haven't really touched a sword since he died. Until today." With a small shrug, he glanced up at her. "I guess I wasn't as rusty as I thought I'd be.. if you picked up on my having had training before."

A soft smile mastered Arnyn's features when Pele explained why she was asking this of her. She noticed Pele taking half a step back and changing her sword grip, and narrowed her smiling eyes slightly.

"You honor me with the request and your trust, Pelepele. A yes it is," she confirmed, watching Pele in a more general sense. Her friend and Captain liked surprising her perhaps a touch too much - but Arnyn had learned long ago to always have her guard up when weapons and sparring areas were involved, and slightly changed her own posture to be prepared. "Anything else you wish to spring on me?" She raised her eyebrows questioningly.

"Oh," she said casually, almost as if it were an afterthought. "That does mean I will outrank Lieutenant Brian, yes?" A Lieutenant he might be, but he was a paper pusher and no second in command. Yet it was an important question, since Arnyn did not assume and she was considering to at least temporarily move back into the Barracks. She did not want to escape her house - she loved it, really - but felt like Pele would need her more in the officers' quarters at the moment.

He was having trouble reacting. Anyone with eyes would have been able to tell, and Arnyn was a keeener observer than most. She kept her peace and gave him the space to respond in his own time. She recognized part of what she saw in his eyes. He seemed... afraid. Of something - more likely, someone.

When he finally said that he had had training before, Arnyn nodded slowly, almost encouragingly. "Don't be dismissive of what you have been taught," she said quietly, with a gentle smile. "You are young and strong, and if you had decent training it will not leave your muscle memory that easily."
She nodded again, as if making a decision whilst taking her hand away from his shoulder and stepping back. "Alright. We will make a new agreement, Trastion. No more lies. You will tell me only truths. No half truths. No fibs. When you are uncomfortable with sharing and choose not to, simply say that. We will see where such an approach takes us." Her dark brown eyes investigated his blue ones. "Agreed?"

"So. We've established you have had training. I don't need to know where or from whom or why you got it. What I do want to know is: they knew what they were doing?" She thought to rephrase her question. "They were professionals? How frequently and for how long did you receive training?"

She thought it was best to reiterate something. "I will speak of it to no one. I merely wish to be the instructor you deserve. It serves neither of us to spend much time on things you already know, and only needs refreshing or testing. And if you dare not speak of it..." She gestured to a row of practice dummies a way off. "You can always show me, rather than speak the words."

A long moment passed, during which time he managed to calm a little of the inner storm. And then, she proposed a new agreement. Trastion tilted his head, listening to what she said, and gave a slow nod. No lies.. just speak up and tell her if he didn't want to talk about something. That seemed simple enough, and reasonable, he figured. A wave of relief washed over him, that she was so understanding, and..kind. He hadn't actually expected that, especially with how stern she had seemed on the first. It was nice to know she was also kind, and he smiled faintly. "Yes, ma'am, agreed." He answered with a nod, running a hand through his hair, pushing it out of his face and off to one side.

Her next question made him pause for a second, thinking how to reply to that. "Yes, very professional, I'd say," He replied carefully. "As for how long.." He frowned, trying to remember. "I.. I'd say, a couple times a week, for around ten years or so?" He guessed, though he couldn't quite recall exactly how old he was when he started training. "From the time I was old enough to use one of these," He held up the training sword, "Up until..right after the war." He added, frowning slightly, with a slight emphasis on 'after'. That part had always bothered him.. that his brother had survived all of that, only to be murdered right after. He was too good a swordsman to be defeated honestly, so the coward had to resort to laying a trap for him... it irked Trastion to think about that. So he pushed that thought away, trying to focus on the present.

"I don't know whether I was all that good at it, of course..." He added with a shrug. "I tried my best. But my brother was always better...at everything. He was three years older." He smiled wryly. "Anyway, the training I received back then may be different than what you have to teach me, so I don't mind learning something new," He added with a smile. "Already it seems that this will be a bit different than I was used to. We didn't wear armor for training sessions... that's why I didn't think I'd need it today." He mentioned, feeling a little freer to explain that, now.

A sense of relief appeared and threatened to flood Pele into relaxing too much for the current setting. The decision had not come easy, she had taken a lot of time to think things through or simply putting off acting on the decision, but now voicing it and receiving Arnyn’s agreement made her feel as if a great burden was lifted off her shoulders.

“Not sure I could come up with something else quite as surprising,” she said with a grin. “And you definitely would have greater authority and powers than Lieutenant Brian. Are you thinking of chasing him around and docking his pay for some infraction?”

Pele moved her left foot back and deepening the bend in her knees slightly made and impression as if she was about to lunge forward, yet the only other movement that followed was flicking the tip of her sword to point up towards Arnyn’s chest.

“We should do some hand-to-hand fighting at some point,” she mentioned, as she waited to see if Arnyn would respond with an attack to her change in stance, while she considered the options for her own attacks. At least sparring allowed for such luxury. “I might be more rusty with it than anything else.”

Training Ranger Recruit Romeran

She smiled slightly as she watched Romeran attempting to steady himself on the log, though he did succeed eventually.

“You are big and strong, and not easily pushed over,” she said, watching him take a more threatening stance than she had chosen. “If you managed to keep yourself steady enough, that is something you might use against me. There is no way for me to sidestep as I might on the ground, so you should use your advantage of strength if you can.”

Pele moved her right foot forward just a little, following up with her left, sword still pointing down. “This is good to practice footwork too, along with the balance. Try and move back and forth a bit to get used to this narrow footing, and keep yourself right above the beam, and your feet, without leaning this way and that. At first,” she encouraged him.

To give Romeran a little more space for practice, Pele switched up her stance, taking two steps backwards, first with her right foot and then with the left, so that she again stood with her right foot forward – almost at the very end of the beam. While she did not raise her sword, she watched her trainee intently both to observe how well he would find his balance when moving and to be ready to defend herself should he decide to rush at her.

Ranger Recruit Romeran
Studying under Captain Pele
@Pele Alarion

The captain's logic was sound, of course, Romeran wasn't sure how exactly he was supposed to use his strength to his advantage given that he felt he could fall off the beam if a particularly swift wind blew. He simply nodded, he would have to figure it out as they went. He was beginning to feel more comfortable, luckily, the longer they spent up there, he was mostly concerned with how swinging the sword around would throw off his balance.

As the captain instructed, Romeran tried shuffling back and forth on the beam. He moved his front foot forward a pace and then followed quickly with his back foot in a shuffling motion. It took a few attempts but after a moment Romeran began to feel more confident balancing his weight evenly on the beam, at least without swinging a weapon or parrying. That, he supposed, would come soon enough.

Watching the captain give him more space, he noted how she took steps back, changing which foot was forward. Romeran decided to give it a try. With his right foot back already he pulled his left foot, leaning backwards slightly, and attempted to put it directly behind his right foot. Unused to walking with his feet together on a single line, Romeran miscalculated and placed his foot too far left, not quite on the beam fully. This caused him to lose balance and he swung his arms around violently trying to regain his balance as he searched for the rest of the beam with his left foot.

Luckily, he did not drop his sword nor fall off completely although at one point he had to drop his left hand to the beam as he steadied himself. Romeran stood again, somewhat embarrassed, but determined to try again. This time, he decided to be more careful and was more aware that his foot needed to be placed further around his body than he was used to. Stepping his right foot back this time he was able to find the beam and stepped cleanly resetting himself with his right foot back and left foot forward. He looked up at the captain somewhat hesitantly, if this was how it was starting he was wondering how it would end.

"Nooo," she laughed. "I would never dock pay. And I don't see myself chasing Brian around," she added, jesting. "But it does seem more appealing to take a room in the barracks knowing I outrank him." Arnyn shrugged casually. "He still despises me." The prank wars. They had perenially gotten her on his bad side, but he'd been hard pressed to give her any trouble for it, since she had no longer had a room at the barracks at the time, for one, and had outranked him at the time, as well. She was sure it had been a source of great frustration for the man.

Pele assumed a new stance, and Arnyn leisurely mirrored Pele's footwork, although she held her sword in a higher guard. "Hand to hand sounds good," she nodded. "Next time. Let's see this through, first." As Pele waited, Arnyn smiled. It seemed like her friend had finally decided to wait for Arnyn to move first. And waiting for the other's move was generally the best approach when you knew your way around a blade.

Arnyn suddenly stepped forward with her left foot and moved to bring her sword toward Pele's head. A bold attack, which Pele would need to stop in its tracks as quickly as possible.

She listened attentively and nodded when he had finished. Ten years was a long time. He would have muscle memory. At his comment about the armor, she raised her off-hand.

"Wear it," she advised him. "When training as a Ranger, wear it more often than not. Always, if you can. It is not only about avoiding the worst of the bruising. It pays to get used to it. So you know how warm it is, how quikcly fighting in it dehyrdates you in the different seasons, how the mail affects your arm strength, how the helmet impairs your vision - whatever your choice of armor is, it pays to know your speed and strength in it, and the way your body reacts to its weight and restrictons." She waited a moment, to see if her words were sinking in, and then assumed a high guard stance, her left foot forward and right foot back.

"Let's find out what you have learned over the span of a decade with these professionals. Show me your footwork, Trastion!"

Listening, Trastion nodded slowly as Arnyn explained the reasoning behind wearing the armor even for practice. He'd not really given much thought to any of those things, or the fact that it might cause dehydration or any other issues. But now, hearing Arnyn mention the possibility, he could see how it might become a problem. "Ah, yes, that makes sense," he replied, thoughtful. He recalled the few times he'd worn armor, and how bulky and heavy it had seemed. That was different than the armor he'd been given at the armory here, of course, but still. It had also been difficult and awkward, the one time he'd worn the stuff into a fight. But that was some years ago.

Observing the position that Arnyn had adopted, Trastion took a second to let his mind travel back to his former lessons. He somewhat regretted having not bothered to practice any of this in all that time, but he would remedy that now, with Hyandaner Arnyn. Hopefully. Deciding on a position, Trastion stepped back with his left foot, and held his sword pointed out in front of him, almost horizontally, about level with his belt, the tip angled slightly upward. His mind raced through several techniques he used to practice regularly, yet which he had not given much thought toward in the last few years. Concentrate, he told himself, mentally going through a few of the moves the best he could recall while he waited to see how she would attack. "Ready.. or did you want me to start off attacking, again?"

She gave him a slight smile. "We can do either. But in order to get a better idea of your responses... I shall start us off this time. And remember: behave as you would if I were coming for your head." Her smile quirked for a moment. Then her right foot stepped forward and she moved her sword down and to her left with the force she would use in a proper fight; not aiming for Trastion himself yet but rather aiming to engage his sword instead.

Not the kind of move the more inexperienced would think was the right one, perhaps, but she was curious how his former trainers had taught him to deal with this. They should have taught him, but had they? And if so, had it stuck?

So then... what would be his reaction?

Trastion nodded briefly, with a small smile of his own. He preferred to let the other person attack first, at least a few times, so he could have a chance to get an idea of what they were likely to do. Given the fact there were only a couple of people he'd ever sparred with, and one of those would never spar again, it made it difficult to anticipate what Arnyn might do. From that position, however, he figured he could expect a few different moves, and mostly expected her to aim a slash toward his head. He had contemplated a couple of different options, in the event she did as he was expecting, and so as soon as he saw her sword begin its motion, a slash toward him.

He moved his left foot to the side quickly, sliding himself toward his left, and out of the trajectory of her attack, while his sword moved upward in a hanging block to protect his head and neck, where he thought she was going to be aiming. Her attack turned out to be lower than he was expecting, however, so the that didn't actually turn out quite like he'd anticipated, yet he finished up with a counter-attack, turning his sword so that it slashed downward at an angle, toward her arms. Having seen how fast she could be, he suspected that she ought to be able to stop or evade the blow in time. Hopefully, since he didn't really hold back much on how much force he put into it.

Hyandaner Arnyn Dealedwen
Training Recruit Trastion Leithor

@Rillewen

Arnyn's training sword only made slight contact with Trastion's as he slid to the left and moved into that hanging block. She moved her forward right foot more to the right, pushing off on her left and then having her left foot follow the movement to the right, to stay with him.

As Trastion moved his right foot behind his left and brought his sword around up high to begin his counter, Arnyn's left foot began to step forward toward him and she brought up her sword to meet his. The wooden blades crossed just above or at head level as she put her left foot down, and against expectations Arnyn let go of her sword hilt with her left hand. She simultaneously stretched out her left arm up and forward on the other side of Trastion's blade (for her, to the right of his blade, for him, to the left of his blade) while bringing her hilt up so the sword was horizontal with the ground and his sword would be momentarily stuck between her weapon and her left arm.

Immediately her wrist and arm moved to hook around Trastion's blade, to catch it in the crease of her elbow and under her armpit, her left hand grabbing at the crossguard so he wouldn't be able to pull it back. The motion of hooking her arm around Trastion's blade caused her own weapon to move back around the back of her head. It ended up at her right side, ready for a horizontal thrust.

He inwardly grumbled at himself for misjudging where she would aim her blow, which as a result, threw off his block. Then, before Trastion quite knew how she'd accomplished it, the Hyandaner had his blade trapped. Blinking, he gave a quick tug to try and yank his training sword out of her grip, but it seemed unlikely he would accomplish that. He saw her blade move into position for a thrust, and tried to think fast. How could he prevent that? What was there even left available to him? He couldn't block that, with his blade trapped. If he tried to catch the blade, thinking of it as a real blade, then he'd probably get his hand cut off or something.

As a last-ditch effort to not get "killed" in this mock sword fight, Trastion suddenly pivoted his whole body around as fast as he could, moving his left foot around behind him, with a bit of force from his arms as he attempted to use the motion to also swing her around and maybe put her off balance. With any luck, it might even force her to release her hold on his blade... Although, he remembered a second later, she had appeared to have incredible balance earlier, on the obstacle course, so his unexpected move may not hinder her attack at all. In which case he was 'dead' anyway. But at least he won't have 'died' without a fight.

She felt him moving his left foot more than she saw it, and experience had her slide her left foot further to the side in order to maintain her balance before Trastion might threaten it. Arnyn moved her sword forward, completing the thrust, although she did not complete the move as she would have in a real fight. There was no need, and she was performing it from such a position that actually using force would be rather uncalled for, she found.

"Nice try," she nodded. "Never yield in a fight against a true enemy. Most will just kill you, even if you do." Arnyn let go of Trastion's training sword. "Now, in hindsight. What might you have done differently?" After a moment, she corrected herself. "Or rather - let me put it this way: what allowed me to finish the fight and kill you just now?"

Sighing, Trastion looked down at where he'd been 'stabbed'. "I guess I'm dead," He acknowledged, a bit annoyed that he hadn't done any better than that, and that the duel hadn't gone longer. But then, he reminded himself, she wasn't called Hyandaner for no reason. Her question brought a small frown to his face as he thought about that, stepping back. What could he answer to that? He hadn't really seen how she accomplished that maneuver that trapped his sword. What allowed her to win? "You being faster than me." He answered, with a slight grin, hoping that would make her laugh, rather than frown in disapproval. Seeing as he was still learning what his teacher was like, he couldn't help testing her sense of humor.

"Could you show me how you did that trapping move, though?" He tried to replay it in his mind, but being on the reverse from her, it got a bit confusing. "I think that's what got me.. and I couldn't think of any way to block your stab, with my sword trapped and all." He explained with a bit more seriousness. "Though, wouldn't that risk cutting your arm?" He added as an afterthought, trying to remember how she'd had her arm hooked around it, and whether the blade would have been digging into her arm or not.

The right corner of her mouth quirked up at his comment about her being faster, and although she didn't laugh out loud, the half smile lingered on her face until he'd asked his own questions and tried to answer hers. Then, she nodded and her face settled back into more serious lines.

"I will show you," she replied first of all. "And yes, while that move caught your sword - that move was not what 'killed' you." She gave Trastion a moment, her dark eyes checking to see if he was following what she was saying. "Trapping your sword did not equal killing you. It was my next move that did you in. And while you did try to unbalance me, and I applaud you for not simply freezing in place with surprise, you were unsuccessful. And..." She tilted her head thoughtfully, gauging the recruit in front of her. "...I dare say that at least a part of you knew there was a good possibility your attempt would be in vain. No?"

"What killed you, therefore, Trastion, was your refusal of letting go of your weapon." She raised her own training sword pointedly. "When the choice is between sacrificing your weapon or sacrificing your life - I want you to always choose the former." Arnyn was aware that seemed counterintuitive, and yet... "While you should never surrender your weapon unnecessarily, since that choice can bring you in a very dangerous position against an armed enemy - it is still the right choice when you are faced with the dilemma of either surrendering your sword or your life. Besides, in a realistic battle situation I would assume you have another weapon to fall back on, even if it is only a dagger. Or even if it is only an armoured glove and hand-to-hand combat. In a worst case scenario, you only delay the unevitable, so to speak - but perhaps that will allow a comrade in arms to assist you, and your life is yet saved. Time is your friend."

Arnyn assumed a position similar to the one Trastion had been in when her blade her met his, and right before she'd performed her trapping move. "I will talk you through the move," she said. "Your left foot forward. Have your sword meet mine at the height of your forehead. Then let go of your sword hilt with your left hand." She waited for him to do as she said. "As you can see, your sword is to your left side of my sword, yes? The idea is to move your left arm to your right side of the sword. Hold up your left wrist to the right side of my weapon. You can see that you already need to move your right hand, still holding the sword, up higher to allow for that movement. The only way you can now stretch your left arm out and up, is if you simultaneously move your right elbow up higher, so your sword is more horizontal to the ground - yet still to the left of you sword. The length of my weapon should be going over your head, and you use your crossguard to ensure I don't bring my sword down."

She waited there, to see if he had any questions and whether he understood her instructions so far.

Trastion nodded to what she said, that her trapping his sword wasn't what killed him. "Yes, I know, but I couldn't..." He trailed off what he was going to say, in order to hear the rest of what she said. How he could have prevented getting "killed". "Let go..?" He blinked, glancing at the training weapon, contemplating that. "That didn't really occur to me." He admitted, frowning slightly. Returning to her comment concerning whether he had suspected it might not work, he shrugged. "I didn't know if it would work or not.. I mean, at the last second I remembered how well-balanced you were on the course, but before that, I was just thinking as fast as I could about someway to get control of the situation, or at least get free."

He thought for a moment about her words about surrendering a weapon rather than his life. That made sense, but at the same time, he wasn't sure how he'd go about defending his life if he lost his weapon. "Right, I'll keep that in mind, but what if I'm alone, and the opponent has already gotten me down to my last weapon? If they're significantly better than me, you know? Then.. I guess, I'd just use whatever happens to be handy..hm." He added, thinking out loud for that part. "I guess that's something a ranger would need to be able to do, isn't it? Be resourceful.. being able to use whatever's available if the situation calls for it..."

Realizing that Arnyn was demonstrating, he returned his attention to the maneuver she was showing him. He complied with the instructions to hold his sword up to meet hers, as she instructed, and slowly went through the rest of the motions as she described them. He nodded slowly as she went into how the motions worked, and how his sword ended up in the perfect position for a thrust. "I see," he took a look to study the positioning and how it all worked together. "Can I go through that a couple of times, to get the hang of it better?"

Captain Pele Alarion
Training Ranger Recruit Romeran

@Romeran

Even though she felt somewhat amused at Romeran’s attempts to balance his large self on the beam, Pele held back the light-hearted teasing that wanted to escape her. Instead, she simply observed his movements keenly.

“Try to keep your weight centred instead of leaning forward or backwards too much,” she advised. “It should help you remain more balanced should you misstep at some point.”

“Now, let us add the sword into the mix. Slowly,” Pele raised her sword up over her left shoulder, and then brought it downwards in an arc, as she stepped forward with her left foot. The continued movement brought her sword up over her right shoulder. As she stepped forward with her right foot again, she brought the sword point down behind her and then forward and slightly up to finish in a low guard with point up. This she followed up with a quick simultaneous thrust towards Romeran’s midsection and a shuffle forward, starting with her back – left – foot first, and only then with her right, forward, foot.

Pulling her sword back into the low guard, Pele moved two long steps back along the beam to position herself near its end. “Again, Romeran. While you have to use more than simple arm strength to move your sword, be aware of where most of your weight is – don’t swing yourself around along with the sword or you will fall off. See if you can copy my movements – or try some of your own. Slow. Get used to the narrow footing and handling sword at the same time, and don’t hurry,” she encouraged him, while prepared to defend herself, should he come too close to her.

“Ha… He does want everything in perfect order in the barracks, doesn’t he,” Pele chuckled some more. “Makes me want to expect a sudden room inspection, no matter the rank.” Pele did not seem to have earned particular dislike on the part of Lt Brian, but neither did they seem to like each other particularly.

Arnyn’s sudden move forward did not give Pele time to come up with some amazing intricate combinations to play out. Instead, she raised the blade slightly higher to meet Arnyn’s weapon ensuring that the place of contact was nearer to the hilt of her sword rather than the tip. Instinctively, she both pushed the swords to her right and rotated herself out of the line of attack by stepping left and somewhat forward with her left foot.

“You would leave your comfy home in exchange for a barracks room?” Pele wondered, as she worked to raise her hands and angle the sword point into a position to thrust. Somehow she found herself hopeful at the idea that her friend would do so.

Once he showed her he was listening and understood it so far, she continued. "...Then you hook your forearm over my blade; the rest of your arm follows and your own sword is pushed back more to your left and can easily circle around to be ready and poised for a thrust on your right side."

At his question to go through it again, she nodded, lowered her training sword until he did the same and then held it back up to start anew. "Again." She talked Trastion through it extensively a second time, correcting his stance a bit at some point. The third time, she used less words. "Swords meet. Left hand lets go. Left arm on the open side of my sword. Right elbow up, mind the crossguard. Hook your left arm. Circle around. Thrust."

The fourth time, she demanded he do it faster, and the fifth time she gave him no instructions. They went through it a few more times, before Arnyn nodded. "We will revisit the move later. If you want to master it, you need muscle memory first. Speed comes next. And only then it becomes useful. Right now I want to circle back to the matter of sacrificing your weapon. I want you to understand you should never do it carelessly, of course. But in this case, it would have been wise. Even if you are alone, even if you no longer have a weapon, even if you know you cannot win against your current adversary without a weapon... Yes, you can see if there is anything around you can use. You can also temporarily retreat until you find something you can use. Running away... shouldn't always be seen as cowardice. Running away can be wise. So you may find something to help you. So you may find reinforcements. Or so you may simply live to fight another day, by hiding."

Arnyn slanted her head and looked Trastion in the eyes. "Fighting the enemy isn't an honor duel. And my job is to teach to you stay alive, first - to win, second. Know your limits. Know your weaknesses. Staying alive as well as winning, all starts there." She was aware that might sound strange to someone unused to being in similar situations. It didn't sound like the glory and glimmer that some expected. "Tell me - what is going through your mind as I'm telling you this, Trastion?"

After Pele pushed her sword away, Arnyn had moved her blade into a low guard. While Pele brought her sword into position to thrust, Arnyn prepared to make the thrust go off course by bringing her own sword up, hilt higher than the tip. The idea would be to make Pele's sword go into the air to Arnyn's right rather than into Arnyn herself, and then to step in closer and while still holding Pele's blade as such, make a thrust of her own towards Pele's lower belly or her thigh - depending on how high she would manage to push Pele's intended thrust.

"Of course," Arnyn answered Pele's question. She frowned at her friend, in seeming lack of understanding. In her mind, it was simple. "I think that is where you need me. And as such, that is where I want to be."

After going through the move several times, Trastion began to get more confident about doing it. He would definitely be practicing that later, at least the best he could to the air. Unless... maybe he could talk his roommate into some sword practice. He briefly thought of that and decided to at least check the likelihood of Mourgan joining him for some extra practice sessions, later. For now he tried to give his whole attention to the Hyandaner, as she returned to the previous topic.

Listening carefully, he nodded slightly as she spoke, although as she began to talk about how running away wasn't being cowardly, and everything after, he grew still, listening more intently. He almost couldn't believe the words she chose just now.. it was as if she could read his mind, almost. That thought was slightly spooky, but he doubted that was truly the case. With his eyes slightly widened, he found himself staring in silent surprise at his trainer. How could she possibly have known... He didn't expect to hear such words, and wanted to take a moment to digest them, so that he would not forget them.

Blinking as she caught him off guard with her next question, he hesitated. "Um.. well, it's..I'm not sure how to explain..." Looking at his training sword thoughtfully, he shifted a bit uncomfortably, unsure how much he wanted to divulge of his thoughts. After a moment, he glanced up at her again. "I think that you must be incredibly gifted, Hyandaner Arnyn," He answered with a little more confidence. "To know exactly the right thing to say to whomever you're speaking to... or..something like that." He smiled faintly, and continued, speaking quietly but sincerely. "I want to thank you for saying what you just said, a minute ago. I..don't feel that I can explain why...but your words mean a lot more than you may realize."

Hyandaner Arnyn Dealedwen
Training Recruit Trastion Leithor

@Rillewen

Her own concerns about being misunderstood, combined with the quiet stare Trastion had been given her, had prompted the question. He seemed to find her word strange at least, surprising perhaps, or baffling even. Arnyn couldn't really tell which it was.

Her question made him uncomfortable. She frowned slightly as he started a halting sentence, which she had come to associate with him having trouble navigating through what he felt he couldn't tell her. When he gave her a completely unexpected compliment, the frown faded and made way for muted surprise. At his elaboration, she didn't quite understand how what she had said could have been 'exactly the right thing to say' to him. She tried replaying her words. Sacrificing your weapon only when necessary. Use whatever you can around you. Running away as a valid option. She'd emphasized running away the most, perhaps. Running away to find someothing useful to use in the fight; running away to find people who could help; running away to hide.

And here she had him, a fresh trainee, hardly of age. Who had wanted to hide the skills he had already learned. Who didn't feel like he could tell her much about his past. What had he run away from? Some people thought they ran away from circumstances, but in her mind you always ran away from people. People who would cage you, or harm you in even worse ways. Yet, she did not voice her thoughts. Nor did she ask. They had an agreement, after all. If he was not offering the information freely, she would not pry. This was not an instance where she needed to know to instruct him better. Not yet.
He understood her words, that was clear. Even more so, he appreciated them. He'd clearly needed to hear them, on a personal level. That was definitely an added bonus: it meant he would never forget them.

Arnyn nodded, a serious look on her face. "Thank you. I meant them, Trastion. And they are one of the most valuable lessons I have to teach." She smiled slightly. "As per our agreement, you need not explain. I appreciate your words, that is enough."

She casually rested the tip of her practice weapon on the ground and steered the conversation into a different direction. "Pele told me your primary and secondary weapons were yet to be determined. Yet if you have received sword training for about ten years, several times a week..." She gestured. "Unless your training was not limited to swordplay?"

Trastion wasn't sure if Arnyn was surprised or confused by what he'd said, and half-wondered if he ought to have said it. But it was absolutely true. For the last couple of years, he had struggled inwardly with a sense of guilt for running away, while trying to convince himself it was the only thing he could've done.. telling himself all the reasons why it would have been stupid not to run. Yet, he had felt cowardly, and he wasn't entirely sure if he might have done anything differently if he had taken the time to think before he acted, that day that he left home, but there was no changing that now.

But today, to hear someone tell him that running away wasn't necessarily cowardice... someone who was wiser and more experienced, whom he'd already begun to feel respect toward... that meant a lot. And it was reassuring, that perhaps he'd made the right choice then, despite all the doubts he'd entertained since.

As Arnyn changed the topic to primary and secondary weapons, he took a moment to think. "Oh, right. When I spoke to her then, I wasn't really sure about much, but I've thought some on it since. I definitely intend on the sword being my main weapon.. I guess that'd be primary. And, I figure I ought to go with weapons I already know a little how to use, so I figured a bow would make a good choice for another. I'm wouldn't say I'm good at using a bow, but I can do it, enough to hunt a bit.." He considered the last part of what she'd said, and how to answer it. "Yes...I've dabbled a little with a few different kinds of weapons." He answered with slight hesitation. Remembering she didn't like vague answers, he added, "Those would be spear, mace, ax," He paused, deciding not to include the lance, "..as well as bow and arrows, as I mentioned before."

Arnyn gave him a thoughtful look as he replied and listed off the weapons he had 'dabbled with'. Again with the vagueness. "Trastion, 'dabbled' could mean anything from swinging it around in good fun a few times, to a lower intermediate skill level." Pausing to let that sink in, she wondered whether he was once again loathe to divulge much information. Because it would give her clues about where he'd run away from?

"I don't think your choice should depend on what weapons you're already good at," she said, using his chosen expression. "I would advise picking your weapons based on what you enjoy. You will always end up being better with weapons that suit you, in the end. You will train with them more and will not neglect them as easily." She smiled, then, and her face lit in a way it hadn't since they had started the training. "That being said, if you do indeed enjoy the sword and the bow, I dare say it is not a bad choice." Given that her own main weapon was the sword and her secondary the bow, Trastion's choice amused her - and seemed to delight her for some reason. "It's a good balance: a solid melee weapon and a solid ranged weapon." She always sought that balance. Even her smaller side weapons were a dagger and throwing knives - with Arnyn, the balance always came back.

"If you do not change your mind, and you do choose the sword as your primary, I will stay on as your sword instructor," she decided. "Will you be keeping the hand-and-a-half sword? Or switching to a different kind of blade?" She paused for a moment, but it was obvious she still had questions for him.
"For feasibility reasons, I would assume you would not pick a longbow, but a short bow? One you can carry on your back more easily?" Depending on his answer, he would be better off with one instructor or the other. While she was good with a longbow, it was not something she lived and breathed. And new rangers deserved the best training, when it was available.

She then thought of the other weapons he had mentioned. "To finish your Ranger training, you will need to seek training in a third weapon. Not necessarily right now," she added reassuringly. "It doesn't have to be a weapon that is part of your standard equipment, either. But it will be required for you to advance. So you are a well-rounded warrior." One of her slight smiles mastered her expression. "You can decide that later. But I would recommend starting training with your first and secondary weapons early, hence my earlier question."

Inwardly cringing slightly at the reminder that he had still managed to not divulge as many details as Arnyn liked, Trastion held back a sigh and thought how to put it in a way that would be more approved by the hyandaner. "I've had..slight training in each, but I can't actually think off hand exactly how much training with each sort of weapon," He explained with a shrug. "The sword always interested me far more, and the others.. not as much." At the next set of questions, he smiled faintly, somewhat surprised to be asked. He was used to, in the past, being told what weapons he would learn to use, rather than being given the choice. It was strange, but nice. "Well... I did look at a big two-handed sword in the armory, but the lady wouldn't let me have that one." he admitted. "Said I'd better learn with a regular type sword first, and get approval from a higher up. But," He glanced at the sword in his hand. "I think I'm alright with this type, after all. I'll stick with this. The other might be too heavy and bulky, especially if we were in a forest setting." He decided, realizing his admiration of the bigger sword had been a bit unrealistic.

"About the bow, yeah, I figured a short bow would be the logical choice, so I could carry it on my back, as you mentioned." He hesitated. "I actually already have one that I brought with me, which I've used for some time now for hunting. But I wasn't sure if I could use my own or if I had to get one from the armory." He added. Hearing her mention that he would need to pick a third weapon, he smiled, but waited until she had paused before speaking again. "I can answer that right now," he said, despite her saying he didn't have to decide yet. He didn't need to think much about it. "I was already thinking I'd like to have a small ax as my other type of weapon." He informed her, smiling. "I've used axes most recently to fell trees and chop firewood, working in the lumber camps and all, but I'd definitely like that to be my third weapon." He had personal reasons for that, as well as practical, but didn't want to delve into his reasons for choosing it.

"You're quite right that the sword is far more interesting than any others," she said, in good humor. "I'm glad you were... advised against a large two-hander." Perhaps she needed to elaborate further on that. "Your muscles are lean, not bulky. Have you met Mourgan? He has the right build to wield a heavy two-hander without it wearing him down too fast. It's one thing to wield one of those for a sparring match or a duel. It is quite another to wield it in battle, which could take hours. Unless you decide to gretaly increase your muscle mass, which means you'll have to eat three chickens or so a day... the hand-and-a-half longsword will suit your build much better."

"Bring your bow next time," she said, but it was hard to tell whether it was a suggestion, as her tone made it sound, or an order, as one might expect based off her earlier bearing. "Then I can see if the bow suffices, I can get an idea of your current archery skills and we can go over some tips for you to improve."

When trastion said he would like to train with the axe in addition to the sword and the bow, Arnyn nodded slowly. "The axe sounds good." She would have to find out who would be best suited to instruct him in that weapon. If Udan had been around, she would not have hesitated to ask him to train Trastion in the weapon - but the man was on a leave of absence. Granted, Arnyn herself could use a smaller axe if she had to, but she wouldn't call her own skill at the weapon advanced. "I will check with the Captain who among us has the most experience with the axe," she promised Trastion. She had told him that her trainees succeeded - she would do everything she could to make that happen for him.

"Right." She raised her practice weapon. "Now for something different. We won't be sparring, as such. I want you to show me some of your moves. I attack you - you defend and counter. Then we assess. And then we start over." She waited for him to adopt his chosen stance. Without further ado, Arnyn aimed a thrust at his chest.

A grin found its way onto his face as Arnyn asked him whether he knew Mourgan. “Yeah, he’s my roommate.” Trastion answered, amused that she would have asked about that particular person. “I’ve also met Romeran,” he added, recalling that both of them had a fairly large, muscular build. He honestly couldn’t see himself being like that, so it was good to hear that the sword choice he had was best suited to him. The bigger sword may look impressive and awesome, but the kind he had would be more useful and practical, plus he recognized that he could accomplish quicker attacks with it.

He nodded slightly when she told him to bring the bow next time. “Yes ma’am. The arrows too, or are there special arrows for practice?” He wondered, figuring he might ought to check that. “Mine are for hunting…” He explained, unsure how that would work when fired into a target, rather than a deer or rabbit. He only had a few of those arrows left, actually. He had set out with about a dozen, and had about half that left, after a couple of years roaming and having to catch whatever he ate. If nothing else, his travels had made him feel a greater appreciation for things he had once taken for granted, like money and equipment that wouldn’t be easily replaced, and plenty to eat at every meal. Hopefully, those experiences had made him better prepared for this new life with the rangers, but he had little doubt that there was still plenty to learn. For instance, aside from how to chop down a tree or cut it into firewood, he barely remembered much about using an ax.

And then, it was back to the sword practice. He gave a brief nod to show that he understood the instructions, then took a moment to think, observing how she was standing, before choosing a stance with his right foot front, sword held level at waist height and pointing toward her, thinking quickly of one of the defense moves he used to practice, before.

As she moved to thrust toward him, Trastion reacted quickly, but too late realized that he’d gotten mixed up with a different move, just like he used to do years ago. He carried through with it anyway, hoping for the best. With his left foot stepping across toward his right, his sword moved to his left; his right hand held the sword vertically -blade pointed to the ground- to block her sword, while his left hand let go and reached for her arms so he could push her weapon to the side, away from him. His right hand carried the blade around his head, and into a downward angled slash toward the back of her leg nearest him, the left hand coming back to the handle just in time to perform this cut with more power than one hand alone would have done. Meanwhile, his feet didn’t move so smoothly, however, taking a few steps to get himself turned correctly by the time the sword had finished its path. Glancing at Arnyn, he waited to hear what criticism she would have for him.

She nodded when Trastion said Mourgan was his roommate. "Good." She was pleased that he had been paired with an experienced Ranger like Mourgan. "You can learn a lot from Mourgan."

In response to his question about archery, Arnyn told him to bring his arrows, too. She wanted to see them and watch how he handled those arrows. Then they could switch to training arrows that were more easily removed from the targets.

Upon her thrust, Arnyn let him perform his defence and move into his counter. Her practice weapon moved away from him as a result, to her own right. His counter involved circling his blade around his head, and while it was really quite fast, she saw the counter coming, and while her sword was not in an ideal position to parry, she blocked Trastion's fast approaching practice weapon with her left forearm, catching the weapon with her vambrace. With the speed and force Trastion had put behind it, it was likely to hurt - yet Trastion couldn't tell from her expression or body language whether it did.

"Alright," she said, straightening. "No hesitation, good. All in all, not a bad move. Smoothly executed, precise. However, I blocked your counter. Why, in this case, was I able to do that? Other than speed and experience," she added with a faint smile. "What about your counter enabled me to block it, do you think?"

Captain Pele Alarion
Sparring with Hyandaner Arnyn Dealedwen

@Arnyn

"I suppose I do need you nearby," Pele admitted, a shadow of a smile touching her lips. "At least for the time being."

She had been distracted for the slightest moment while looking at Arnyn as she spoke, and even though she turned her attention back to their sparring and attempted to correct the effects of being careless only for a little while. That while was enough to end up with her sword not reaching the target and lifted high enough and tied to leave her open for a counterattack.

"Oh bother," Pele sighed as she felt Arnyn's sword tip graze against the chainmail on her hip while she did her best to rotate out of the way, stepping with her right foot backwards and adjusting her left foot accordingly, simultaneously trying to recover full control of her sword by lifting it up and over, all in an attempt to gain enough time and space to reset.

She shook her head in dissatisfaction, as she took another step back to bring the sword back into a low guard. "I just might be that proper sleep is the element I miss to make sure my performance is much better than this. Too inconsistent still," she evaluated the results this far. "At least the range of motion is not limited."

Trastion smiled. "I was thinking about asking Mourgan about doing some practice together.. if that's alright?" He wouldn't like to step on any toes if there were some kind of rules about only training with the person he was assigned to train with. He gave a brief nod in reply to her saying to bring the arrows, mentally adding that to the list of things to bring. Armor, sword, bow, arrows.. "Should I bring my pack too?" he wondered. If he was supposed to bring the other gear so he could get familiar with fighting/moving with all his gear, then it might make sense to do the same while having a pack on, right? He waited to hear what Arnyn would say on the matter, however.

Focusing back on the other matter, the move he had tried to pull off, Trastion gave a thoughtful frown at the hyandaner's question. "Well.. I messed it up, that might have something to do with it." He mentioned with a small smile. "That move always gets me, I should've picked a different one I guess, but it was the first thing that came to mind." His brow furrowed as he tried to recall how the move was supposed to go. "Let's see, what'd I do wrong... I should've had my feet switched, and stepped with the right foot, not the left..." He slowly went through the actions. "So then that would've required less stepping and made everything else go more smoothly." He sighed. "I knew I messed up the moment I started, but it was too late to fix it then," He explained with a sigh. "I remember stuff like that, but like, not everything like I should remember it, if that makes sense." He paused, and glanced at her as he added, "Is uh..that what you were going to say?" Perhaps she had a totally different criticism for him, which he would be curious to hear if that were the case.

Hyandaner Arnyn Dealedwen
Training Recruit Trastion Leithor

@Rillewen

"Of course you can ask him to practice with you," Arnyn said, even encouragingly so. "If you practice the sword with him, do realize that I am your sword instuctor. If you want any sword skills you learn from Mourgan to count towards your progression within the Rangers, you will have to demonstrate them to me. If you would like for Mourgan to become your instructor for a certain skill, you will need to ask the Captain for approval that Mourgan trains you in this. If she agrees, he can even teach and evaluate you as I am doing."

On what he should bring when they would start with the bow, Arnyn smiled. Looks like she got him thinking, in preparation. Good. "Your bow, your arrows, the full gear you would wear in summer if you were going out on a mission with a good chance at melee. I like your idea of bringing a pack," she decided. "So yes, bring one."

She shook her head with a smile when Trastion replied to her question and said he had messed up. "There is no one right move," she said goodnaturedly. "Some of the best swordfighters are those who make known moves their own, and adapt them according to the situation. None of us are perfect. We are only human." Her brown eyes twinkled at this. "You can change up a move and still win the fight, no?"

Creativity was something she wanted to stimulate, not stifle. "The only way to mess up a move is when it gets you killed," she said decidedly. "So no, that was not what I was going to say." Arnyn's smile faded into more serious lines. "I blocked your counter - because I saw it coming. And seeing it coming gave me sufficient time to move my arm where I did."

"Now," she said, clearly at the beginning of some lesson she thought he needed to imprint on his memory, "our move was fast and fluid, and against a slower or less experienced opponent it may well have hit. However, I am fast, I am experienced, I was in a position to stop you - albeit it not with my sword - and you circled your sword all the way around your head to attack me." She paused for a breath, checking if he was starting to get her point. "You gave me the time I needed. And that is enough."

"I don't want to simply teach you some flashy moves like what I did when I hooked my arm around your sword. Although," she added with some thoughtfulness. "Despite it being flashy it was also efficient in that moment." She shook her head, returning to the point. "I don't want to teach you how to win from someone who is less skilled than you. I want to teach you how to fight an opponent who is just as good, or better, than you are." She held her left index finger to her face, the top of her vinger against her forehead. "And for that, you need techniques that are efficient. Efficient techniques require as little movement as possible, thus giving your opponent little warning and even less time to do anything about them. Or, efficient techniques are entirely unexpected, again giving your opponent little warning and hardly any time to do anything to block them, let alone to counter right away."

"You saw my attack, and you blocked it with one move. Then you moved into a counter from there, with another, separate move. I want to teach you how to block my move with a counter, when at all possible."

"So, then. Let's reverse. You thrust at me, like I thrustred at you. And I will show you what I mean."
When Trastion thrusted at her chest, Arnyn brought raised the hilt of her sword, dipping the tip slightly lower than where it had been in her guard. She caught Trastion's blade from below, pushing his up higher and enough to the right to go over and next to her head, and as her blade started pushing his upward, She prevented him from trying to slide the end of his blade next to her sword by angling the crossguard horizontal with the ground, thus protecting her head. And even as she was pushing his blade up, Arnyn rushed forward toward him, so close and so fast that the tip of her own practice weapon hit him in the stomach.

She wasn't holding back, and Trastion would have felt his lack of armor. Arnyn lowered her practice weapon, slanting her head. "One move, the block, turned into two moves, simply by me stepping forward," she summarized.

They spent the rest of the session in a similar fashion: Arnyn attacked Trastion, he blocked and countered, they discussed his chosen moves, and Arnyn then showed him what she might have done. When the time for the next meal came, the Hyandaner called their session to an end.
"That is enough for today," she said. "I advise you to go rehydrate, eat and clean yourself up before tackling the rest of your day."She returned her training weapon to its rightful place, and gestured for him to do the same, before she closed it and picked up her own sword from the side of the sparring area, slinging the custom scabbard across her chest and back.

The blonde Ranger smiled at her recruit. "It was good to properly meet you, Trastion Leithor." Then she offered him her hand and forearm, for a warrior's clasp. "Arnyn Dealedwen."

After they'd clasped each other's forearms, she turned toward the exit, wasting no time in heading toward the rest of her own day. "I will see you two days hence, at the archery range," she called back over her shoulder. "Right after midday."

Recruit Trastion Leithor

"Oh, no, I wasn't talking about asking him to be an instructor or anything like that," He hastened to clarify, after hearing her reply. "No, just.. some extra practice, sparring, and things like that." He hesitated slightly before mentioning quietly, "I guess I miss having someone about my age to spar with. I thought it might help me brush up on some things, and..maybe I could make a friend. Especially since I'm sharing a room with him, I'd like to spend some time getting to know the guy." He explained. "I just.. well all this, here, is pretty new to me, and I don't know what sort of rules you have, so it seemed only proper to check that I was allowed to practice with other people besides my instructor.. you know?"

She wanted him to bring his pack, so he nodded and added that to the mental list. Then, mentally tossed out the list. If he was bringing his pack, his armor, and his weapons.. that was literally everything he owned these days. So there was no need for a list to keep up with in his head. "Alright then, I'll bring my pack." It vaguely crossed his mind to bring the pack, empty, just as a joke to see what she'd say, but decided that would be too much trouble to unpack everything. Instead he turned his attention toward her corrections.

Listening carefully, he nodded slowly to show he was paying attention as she offered correction to what he'd done. "Ah.. that makes sense." He nodded and obliged her request to attack her with a thrust, only to end up wincing slightly as she jabbed him in the stomach with her blade. It was just a wooden blade, so he could handle the blow, but it would have been deadly with a real blade.

As they went through more lessons, Trastion found himself wondering whether the younger him had simply chosen to remember the more complicated flashy things, or what, because he found it unlikely his instructor wouldn't have taught simple stuff like Arnyn was showing him, and some things seemed familiar but didn't stick in his memory as well as the fancier stuff. That he wouldn't have paid proper attention seemed likely, if he was honest, and so he tried not to worry too much about being corrected. Instead, he paid close attention now, to the things Arnyn was teaching him, so he might commit the lessons to memory as they went through many things, and time slipped away faster than he realized.

When the Hyandaner called a halt to their training session, Trastion was slightly surprised it was time to end already. Yet, he was so hungry and thirsty, sore, and tired... he was glad to call it a day already. Pushing his hair, wet with sweat, back from his forehead, he clasped the Hyandaner's forearm in return and grinned. "Thank you for.. everything, Hyandaner." He replied. He meant it not just about the lessons, but the talk earlier, and her understanding and everything. "Two days, archery range. Midday." He repeated with a nod. "I'll see you then."

With a slower pace, he headed back for the city, eager to get back, grab some food and drink, and maybe nap for the rest of the day.

Ranger Recruit Romeran
Studying under Captain Pele
@Pele Alarion

Luckily for Romeran's confidence, the Captain chose not to tease his performance, although he would not have blamed her had she done so. Instead, she opted for some words of confidence and in response Romeran stood up slightly straighter and took in a deep breath to calm his nerves. Even though they had only been on the beam for a short time, Romeran found that he was beginning to feel more comfortable with his balance. While he was standing and the captain was talking, Romeran took a few slow swings with his sword, trying to get a feel of how the momentum of the blade would pull him off balance to that side so that he could compensate his weight on the other side. There was a sort of pendulum motion to it, as he swung one way he leaning slightly in the other way he felt more balanced across the center of the beam.

"Is it advantageous to counterbalance your swing even when you are not on a balance beam?" Romeran asked, perhaps realizing the value of this particular exercise. Staying centered in balance seemed likely to be advantageous insofar as staying upright when the opponent was attacking, but he was no melee fighter in training.

Romeran tried to pay close attention to the Captain as she moved and attacked simultaneously across the beam. It was clear that she had done this many hundreds, if not thousands, of times and looked about as comfortable on the beam as she did off the beam, it was a testament to her balance and skill. Romeran took note of precisely which legs moved and how the sword arced down and up again, he was going to try and mimic her movements exactly as that seemed the best way to do something right.

As Romeran brought the sword over his left shoulder and swung it as the captain had he could feel that stepping forward with his left foot was the right thing to do, it was the natural counter-measure. Stepping forward, he completed the first arc downwards with his sword and continued up above his right shoulder as Pele had done. He followed the next swing with a step forward with his right foot and finished with the same thrust the Captain had done. Romeran's longer legs and larger stature had brought him further along the beam than Captain Pele had traveled, far enough that his final thrust would come dangerously close to the Captain, although Romeran had not intended to do so and as such was not wholly prepared for an incoming parry, should it come.

Recruit Trastion Leithor
Archery range - New Day

Trastion was still a little sore from recent training sessions as he made his way, again, to the training grounds. This time, he wore the leather armor that the smith had suggested for him, along with padding underneath. The sword hung at his side, his pack, with a bedroll, worn on his back. A lengthy coil of rope hung from a strap on the side of the pack, and on the other side hung a canteen filled with water. Strapped close to the bedroll was a leather case. What was inside the pack was anyone's guess, but it appeared fairly full.

He'd made sure to eat before coming, so he wouldn't get too hungry after he'd begun training. Hopefully, he hadn't forgotten anything that he ought to have brought, which seemed unlikely. Finding the archery range, he looked around. He didn't see Arnyn, but decided that didn't automatically mean she wasn't there yet. Curious about how today's training session might go, he took a moment to check out the targets and other things in the vicinity, before lowering his pack to the ground. His arms protested certain movements, after some of the exercises he had put them through lately, but he ignored it and knelt by the pack as he pulled out the case, close to three feet in length, from the straps on the outside.

Maybe today's training wouldn't involve quite so much things to make him sore, he thought with hopefulness. It seemed as if they would only be working on archery, so that couldn't be that bad, right? He paused to consider that, and decided he shouldn't be too hasty in his conclusions. It was probably better to expect the worst, and then he wouldn't be disappointed if it happened, or he could be relieved if it didn't. He'd find out soon enough, anyway, when Arnyn arrived. In the meanwhile, he readjusted the straps holding the bedroll, then took a drink from the canteen.
