Riddles in the Dark
I'll take it! I was aiming for yarn or wool, but wool is after all a type of fur. Your turn @Durien .
they/them/actual hobbit in search of a merrier world
Eeek...I like solving riddles, but I'm not so good at creating them. Here we go:
What has a mouth but cannot drink,
Is always empty but can be filled
Take years or moments to grow or shrink,
Sometimes hot and sometimes chilled?

Dormant volcano?

Artanis / Éomund / Brandor / Zarâm
I was going for cave, but dormant volcano seems to fit too, so accepted!

Yikes Menolly, that was a tough one! The living room clue had me picturing different objects around a room, and misled me from the fact that it had come from a sheep's back! :smiley8: Well done.
Erg, I like riddles, but am not the best at coming up with them, so here’s a classic.
As I was going to St. Ives,
I met a man with seven wives,
Each wife had seven sacks,
Each sack had seven cats,
Each cat had seven kits:
Kits, cats, sacks, and wives,
How many were there going to St. Ives?

Artanis / Éomund / Brandor / Zarâm
Ha I'll have to resist the urge to google this! Just one is my guess, since I think I was the only one going to St. Ives when I met the man and wives and sacks with cats and kits.
they/them/actual hobbit in search of a merrier world
@Menolly Yep, you've got it.

Artanis / Éomund / Brandor / Zarâm
Not going to lie, I did some multiplying by sevens math there before I thought about the turn of phrase.
I capture moments of time gone by
Holding them still in the blink of an eye
I used to be balanced on a stand
Now I can be held in just one hand

A camera? :smiley8:

Evil is a lifestyle | she/her
Yes indeed! Your turn @Moriel.
they/them/actual hobbit in search of a merrier world
Brought hither by foul weather
But appearing only in sun,
I wear a coat of many colors
Though really, I have none.
If you seek to find me you will find that you cannot,
For I am ever shifting, never sitting in one spot.

Wouldst that be a rainbow?
"We are born of the blood, made men by the blood, undone by the blood. Our eyes have yet to open... Fear the Old Blood..."
You got it @Frost! Your turn.

Evil is a lifestyle | she/her
Some call me wisdom
some call me death
I say don't call me late to the battlefield
some call me death
I say don't call me late to the battlefield
"We are born of the blood, made men by the blood, undone by the blood. Our eyes have yet to open... Fear the Old Blood..."
Athena?

Evil is a lifestyle | she/her
You're on the right path, but not quite
"We are born of the blood, made men by the blood, undone by the blood. Our eyes have yet to open... Fear the Old Blood..."
Freya then? I was torn

Evil is a lifestyle | she/her
closer! but not quite so grand
"We are born of the blood, made men by the blood, undone by the blood. Our eyes have yet to open... Fear the Old Blood..."
The Valkyrie?
they/them/actual hobbit in search of a merrier world
Still a little too grand, think more down to earth :smiley10:
"We are born of the blood, made men by the blood, undone by the blood. Our eyes have yet to open... Fear the Old Blood..."
Hel?
Rohirrim at heart, always.
They're all true. Especially the lies.
They're all true. Especially the lies.
Bad Frosty! I may have not done a good job leading with the hints. I will say it's not a specific person and its more folklore than mythology
"We are born of the blood, made men by the blood, undone by the blood. Our eyes have yet to open... Fear the Old Blood..."
A raven? Though, uh, that wouldn't be very "down to earth".
"What filled me with a barbaric joy...it was that I had been able to read the anger of the desert in the beating wings of a dragonfly."
there we go! @Aerlinn for the win! I meant down to earth as opposed to gods and mythical beings
"We are born of the blood, made men by the blood, undone by the blood. Our eyes have yet to open... Fear the Old Blood..."
Oh, dear. Now to the hard part...well, I tried.
Flattened mountains, legends and keys
In pockets and hands, on walls and cheese.
(sorry, just wanted a rhyme

"What filled me with a barbaric joy...it was that I had been able to read the anger of the desert in the beating wings of a dragonfly."
Mmm, cheese. Tasty tasty cheese. I want some cheese...no wait, I mean, is it a map? (Mmm...cheese)
they/them/actual hobbit in search of a merrier world
@Menolly Yes! Hmmm, I'll have to work on my riddling skills. Your turn!
"What filled me with a barbaric joy...it was that I had been able to read the anger of the desert in the beating wings of a dragonfly."
'Scuse me, I need some elevenses with a cheese course...ok, I shamelessly plagiarized the first half of this one, and then kept going.
Alive without breath
As cold as death
Never thirsty, ever drinking
All in mail never clinking
Always seeking, ever smelling
Hunger driven, never quelling
Tales of me frighten all who dare
But I never intend to scare

Shark?

Artanis / Éomund / Brandor / Zarâm
Correct! Too easy on my part, but I enjoyed taking a canon riddle and adding to it. Your turn @Dimcairien Luiniel.
they/them/actual hobbit in search of a merrier world
Ok, here goes. Probably my first time attempting to write my own riddle.
Keep me fed
And I will rise
I may be sour
But sweet is inside.

Artanis / Éomund / Brandor / Zarâm
Yeast?
Close enough. I was going for sourdough starter, but it is a kind of yeast. You're up @Arothir

Artanis / Éomund / Brandor / Zarâm
On fire, and not fully hot
It is iced and yet not cold
A glorious thought
For young and old
To share its pieces together

I stared at this for at least a full minute and then my brain went...cinnamon bun? Might be real off the mark but that's all I got.
they/them/actual hobbit in search of a merrier world
Close! But not quite, similar realm, though.
molten chocolate lava...birthday cake?
"What filled me with a barbaric joy...it was that I had been able to read the anger of the desert in the beating wings of a dragonfly."
Birthday cake is correct @Aerlinn! I was aiming specifically for cake, but a more specific answer will certainly suffice.
Oh man, I haven't seen that meme in a while @Lúthien Tinúviel
Hullo, by the way!
Uhhh, here goes again..
Perhaps underwater, perhaps in a box,
Scattered or gathered,
Black and white, amongst others.

Pearls?
Er, that does seem to fit rather well, but was not what I had in mind. "In water" may have been a better choice of words than "underwater".
"What filled me with a barbaric joy...it was that I had been able to read the anger of the desert in the beating wings of a dragonfly."
Photographs?
she/her | Esta tierra no es mía, soy de la nocheósfera.
Hmmm...more natural than photographs, but more everyday than pearls
It starts in the ground.

Hmm it seems trickier now!
Could it be roses?
Could it be roses?
Closer!
"What filled me with a barbaric joy...it was that I had been able to read the anger of the desert in the beating wings of a dragonfly."
Is it the flowers by Minas Morgul? They're white, but in a very black (shadowy and evil) place. They're also right by water.
"Wide flats lay on either bank, shadowy meads filled with pale white flowers." Stairs of Cirith Ungol, TTT

Hmmm, wandered a bit further away there. It is mentioned in the books, but not specific to Middle-earth. Possibly (no promises!), it only ever comes up at Bag End.
I thought map was too easy and may have swung around to too vague with this one. Sorry!
