The Book of Lost Threads [Basic Lore Archive Thread]

My plan with this thread(s) is to provide a link to as many Basic Lore threads as are openable and discoverable in the archives. There were obviously many other lore fora on the old plaza, but unlike kingdoms, lore did not disappear in 2009, and so I am worried that this thread may grow unmanageably long if every thread from every lore forum is shoved into one thread here. I may revise that opinion depending on how many threads open, of course, but for now my plan is to open separate threads for other fora, perhaps grouping the smaller lore fora together while leaving more populous ones (and I assume this will be the most populous) to stand alone. If the organization of the archives is no more readable than the archives themselves, I figure, then the whole exercise was one of complete futility.
~~~~~~~~~~
Some organizational notes:
I will be arranging posts by year.
From about 2007 onwards, the threads have multiple pages. Unless otherwise stated, only the first page loads.
I will tag people I spot in the archives just in case they want to look in on an old thread, but as a habit, I tag no more than once per year. People can go a-searching if they want beyond that. If the tagging bothers you (like it does for me) just let me know and I will be sure to stop.
If the majority (or entirety) of a page capture's threads load, I will simply post the page capture, with explanations of any exceptions that do not load.
Without further ado, 2002, when there was no basic/advanced lore distinction, and the forum was simply called Middle-earth Lore:
A capture from August 2002, where most of the threads load, with the following exceptions listed below in ascending order:
https://web.archive.org/web/20020803134 ... ForumID=21
Mithril Stainless Steel?
The Magic of the Mirror
Why did Tolkien base the story upon RINGS? (I am actually curious what people have to say about this one, would be a good redux thread)
Another capture, this time from October. There's a thread from baby Hoth in here, asking about the Kinslaying, and also some poor soul who thought Theoden and his family might be inbred rednecks because they misread the term sister-daughter. Oh dear :googly: :
https://web.archive.org/web/20021011070 ... ForumID=21
name of saurons mouth (liutenant)
Not totally Convinced
Greatest Battles/VOTE
So even though this post looks kind of short, a bunch of threads actually load, I think about 25 or so? It's probably mostly only good for laughs, unfortunately, I didn't see any particularly deep discussions. To be fair, the forum was still relatively small and was already being bombarded by teenage fanboys and girls who mostly wanted to say how much they loved Legolas or whatever. I have to say, it's at least worth the peek (to me) just to see some of the shocking or hilarious titles back then.
WHAT? This isn't the forum to say how much I love Legolas? Excuse me! Legolas+Lirimaer 4eva <3 xoxo
(sorrynotsorry)
The Wood-elves lingered in the twilight of our Sun and Moon, but loved best the stars.
:rasp:
From the first capture in 2003 (April), we already see that the forum has been split, and this one named "Beginner Lore", separate from Advanced Lore underneath it. This archive thread is for the Beginner Lore, which will get another name later. :)
2003
halfir was already very active, he has thousands of points even in early 2003
@Aduchil spotted in a thread called Sauron really Destroyed? and another called nazgul vs balrog. Thanks for informing "borogorn" LOL
@Arnyn spotted you in some of these threads, like Who or What is Tom Bombadil and Is Aragorn a half-elf, has to be some of your earliest posts right?
The great majority of these threads load, like 75 percent, but I'm still going to link them all separately because uh, well, I sank a lot of time into organizing them already. Sigh.
Policy on Surveys (Update 5-11-03) -- Early Melkor, Vana, and Nessa icons, and a hardline policy against low-effort point harvesting through surveys, polls, and games. There was apparently some (deleted) backlash.
Arwen’s Family -- Either nobody had anything to say on this topic, or the archive has cut it pretty short
https://web.archive.org/web/20030513233 ... Position=1
is aragorn half elf? -- The usernames appearing in this thread are really something else, you should check them out. I think my favorite is ChibiStrider, but it's hard to say.
Basic Lore Help X (bring your questions) -- snoop dawg out here dropping knowledge bombs about glorfindel, didn't know he was such a Tolkien NERD
https://web.archive.org/web/20030513224 ... Position=1
Bilbo’s other adventures -- The spelling is so poor sometimes it hurts to read. They weren't even typing on phones back in 2003!
https://web.archive.org/web/20030513233 ... Position=1
Concerning Balrogs -- Poster gracefully left it out of the title, but can Balrogs do the sex? Really ancient Vaire icon in there.
https://web.archive.org/web/20030513232 ... Position=1
Can you answer me 2 questions? -- Sure. What's the 2nd question?
https://web.archive.org/web/20030513232 ... Position=1
Aragorn!!!!!! -- The title kind of just says it all, doesn't it?
https://web.archive.org/web/20030513234 ... Position=1
Who or what is Tom Bombadil? -- goblinkilla116, with a dwarf icon I LOVE IT, also an appearance by @Karis Ziranphel to point out that nobody is reading before posting, gj Karis halfir suggests a "definitive" Bombadil investigation thread to Philthrandir.
https://web.archive.org/web/20030513233 ... Position=1
Small People -- Tolkien is racist and sexist, but at least he gives representation to vertically challenged folk in a world dominated by tall models? Not a well-received thread.
https://web.archive.org/web/20030513234 ... Position=1
nazgul v balrog -- I can sum up this thread for you: "I think the balrog would win" "I think the nazgul would win" Boom there you go you can skip this one.
https://web.archive.org/web/20030513234 ... Position=1
Women in the Fellowship -- "Okay I don’t know if anyone else saw this but there were no women in the fellowship!" Honestly not sure anyone but Daughterofhorse ever saw this important detail, except of course for lotrlvr, who points out a bit down the thread that she too noticed, and gives us the true deep wisdom, that "It was sexist back hten, and some people are still sexist now, but thats just the way that life is"
https://web.archive.org/web/20030513234 ... Position=1
I think that lotrlvr's mic drop is as good a note as any to end this post on, there's still plenty more of 2003 but this has already sucked up most of my posting time for the day.
Wow, hands-down the very best part of this thread is the summaries of ancient and sometimes pointless lore topics by 2020 Ducky. Thank you for your service, sir.
Interesting look into the past there. Brings back memories. Thanks Ducky! I see Arnyn also made an early appearance in that thread. Good points.
Not reading previous answers is still a pet-peeve of mine, and a reason I stayed well away from Lore for the most part after a few brief early interactions.
2003, continued. The archives were being a bit weird, I'm worried I may have missed a few threads that should have loaded but didn't because the internet. Might go back later and check. We'll see.
Was the LoTR World Real? -- "The thing is that if it did, no one would know, because no one has ever checked." Someone get on this!
https://web.archive.org/web/20030707202 ... Position=1
Was the LOTR world real? 2 -- The same fellow made both threads, but in the first one he had a wizzie icon, and now he has a minion icon. Also, it's word for word the same opening post. These two facts encapsulate the entire plaza experience.
https://web.archive.org/web/20031023225 ... Position=1
This next capture is from August, and the forum has officially been renamed Basic Lore instead of Beginner Lore
Stowaways to Valinor -- halfir provides a link to a near-identical thread, which loads. I provide both links below.
https://web.archive.org/web/20030826105 ... Position=1
https://web.archive.org/web/20030901031 ... Position=1
Isildur (and heirs) rulers of Gondor and Arnor? -- Cool Varda icon!
https://web.archive.org/web/20030826105 ... Position=1
Basic Lore Help 20 (bring your questions!!) -- tbh this thread is kind of the blind leading the blind
https://web.archive.org/web/20030826104 ... Position=1
All about Elves... -- Whoa, someone uses HoME in this thread! Actual lore!
https://web.archive.org/web/20030826110 ... Position=1
LOTR in the future -- There's a funky "modern" map of ME provided in this thread. I say "modern" because it's labeled 1999.
https://web.archive.org/web/20030826105 ... Position=1
Where did Eru come from -- Shoutout to the username "Uhhh", I feel that in my soul.
https://web.archive.org/web/20030826105 ... Position=1
Fays Pixies Brownies -- The discussion is going fine enough, and then in comes "Hobbits are called halflings in Rivendell, so they are a cross between men and some other race, of which I currently believe to be Dwarves."
https://web.archive.org/web/20030826105 ... Position=1
Older? -- The rare actually interesting question and thread, although nobody seems to know what they are talking about.
https://web.archive.org/web/20030826105 ... Position=1
Gollum saved ME on purpose? -- A fun thought exercise, too bad everyone in the thread was kind of dismissive.
https://web.archive.org/web/20030826110 ... Position=1
The ’Orders’ of Eä -- Almost nothing here, thread was cut short.
https://web.archive.org/web/20030826110 ... Position=1
Horses or wargs? -- Not quite as exciting as nazgul vs balrog tbh, but The Two Towers had come out recently so you can understand the question's existence.
https://web.archive.org/web/20030826110 ... Position=1
Redheads in ME? -- "This is probably a very stupid question or at least very strange, probably somewhere along the lines of "Can Ents float?"" Now that's the thread that SHOULD have been opened.
https://web.archive.org/web/20030826111 ... Position=1
Felarof and animals who... -- "Hey guys! Remember The Hobbit?" Nah Beserker, nobody remembers.
https://web.archive.org/web/20030826110 ... Position=1
sam vs. frodo -- "to me, sam is the hero of the story, not frodo." Fun topic, too bad a lot of the posts can be summed up as "wow they both have their strong points idk"
https://web.archive.org/web/20030826110 ... Position=1
Elrond’s Bro -- "why would he choose to be human??!!! No point really! I’d be an elf and a champion elf at that!" Sure you would buddy. You're a champ in my heart.
https://web.archive.org/web/20030826110 ... Position=1
S is for Sauron! -- T is for Thuringwethil! U is for Urwen! And so on.
https://web.archive.org/web/20030826105 ... Position=1
Also I said I was breaking these posts up by year but holy moly there are so many threads that load from 2003, and almost nothing from a lot of later years, so instead I'm breaking them up by "wow I just spent more than an hour I need to feed a toddler or something".
@Aduchil, congratulations, you were called out as one of the top 5 most helpful in Basic Lore Help 20 (so I guess you did a lot in Basic Lore Help 19?)
Also big shoutout to Vanwa Inarion, who asks "What got into Fëanen to act the way he did? Was it Melkors power? or was he foolish?", which is pretty much the million dollar question of the Silmarillion, huh?
2003 still continued, yeesh.
Trolls -- Not the internet kind! Cool Este icon in there.
https://web.archive.org/web/20031004202 ... Position=1
aragorns lineage -- One of those "just read the book" questions
https://web.archive.org/web/20031004212 ... Position=1
The Balrog that fought Gandalf -- Not the earliest thread about Balrog wings, but the earliest one I could find. @Elenhir with his wizzie icon in here.
https://web.archive.org/web/20031004182 ... Position=1
Hobbit Elves and Movie Elves.. -- Tinw in there, I miss her.
https://web.archive.org/web/20031004212 ... Position=1
What is Sauron? -- Darn I already made a "how is Sauron" joke
https://web.archive.org/web/20031004181 ... Position=1
Nazguls -- Nazgul is already plural though...
https://web.archive.org/web/20031004212 ... Position=1
Ents -- Of course @Mojo was around to help answer a question on this particular topic.
https://web.archive.org/web/20031004205 ... Position=1
Other races (W. Creatures) -- "I am assuming it [the Watcher in the Water] was somehow captured, conjured, or otherwise subdued by Balin or one of his kin or underlings" Yeaahhhhh maybe make a different assumption
https://web.archive.org/web/20031004182 ... Position=1
Uruki and Orcs -- Not sure why the OP consistently called Uruks "Uruki"
https://web.archive.org/web/20031004203 ... Position=1
Sudden Flame? -- Some weird uninformed speculation based on misreading in there. I guess that's not a surprise.
https://web.archive.org/web/20031004202 ... Position=1
Years -- A nifty little question, but doesn't make for deep discussion. Short thread.
https://web.archive.org/web/20031004205 ... Position=1
What happened to the Easterlings? -- DudeofGondor asking the important questions. His sig is great too.
https://web.archive.org/web/20031004210 ... Position=1
Basic Lore Help 23 (bring your questions!!) -- webdesigner13 in this thread, I have to wonder, is it a 13 year old web designer?
https://web.archive.org/web/20031004181 ... Position=1
Noldorin Rebellion: a bad thing? -- Maybe the end DOES justify the means though you guys. Sometimes you gotta slay a few kin to save the world in the long run amirite?
https://web.archive.org/web/20031004205 ... Position=1
Books -- There's no summarizing this thread, you just have to read JadeMara13's thesis for yourself.
https://web.archive.org/web/20031004182 ... Position=1
How old is Legolas? -- MeaghanB!
https://web.archive.org/web/20031004203 ... Position=1
Should Frodo have taken the Ring? -- I think this question is really more of a "why did he go on this journey", not "Frodo should have given the ring away"
https://web.archive.org/web/20031004204 ... Position=1
1st King of Rohan -- " *suddenly notices sig* I hope you’re not askin’ for help on your cavalry exams!" -- Tinw :lol:
https://web.archive.org/web/20031004182 ... Position=1
Wild Men -- Cut short? Or nobody answered.
https://web.archive.org/web/20031004183 ... Position=1
Which Balrog? -- Imagine a witch balrog, yikes
https://web.archive.org/web/20031004210 ... Position=1
Well, wayback is being weird atm, but I think that's actually all that will load from 2003 regardless, the December capture threads are not playing nicely.
@Aduchil I'm sure I would have been the same -- if I'd been older than 4 in 2003 :lol:
also -- maybe "Uruki" is a misheard "Uruk-hai"? They certainly do throw that word around in the movies.
Oh boy, some of those early lore threads are downright cringy. I'm curious how much of the early Plaza population was made up of teenage Legolas fangirls. I guess Lore wasn't always the "scary serious place" that I remember.
I just want to take the time to appreciate the fantastic defense of the representation of women in LoTR, reproduced in full here:
Now that you bring up the subject,there is a serious lack of female charecters in the book.But I,as a female,know I would be often wearing the ring so I looked nice,so I wouldnt be any good owning the ring,I dont think men though,would have this problem!!
Beautiful.
Okay, that's at least half of 2004. Gotta take a break before the internet eats this really long post.
Basically every thread on the August capture loads, but it has become my self-imposed fate to summarize and link each individual thread because it really feels pointless to do otherwise "here's a capture, go look if you want" doesn't even feel worth a post. Still, ughhhhh so many threads! :party:
2004, cont.
Boromir and Faramir: Elf Blood? -- Eönwë tribute rank just chilling in here.
https://web.archive.org/web/20040824061 ... Position=1
Uruks, Uruk-hai. -- posted by the joe-ker. Ugh. Also, Denethor II has this Pallando rank at the time! And his sig says he's the one and only, bit ironic seeing as how he's Denethor TWO. And to cap it off, we have DancesW/Bunnies as Beechbone LOL
https://web.archive.org/web/20040826141 ... Position=1
Children of Rohan: Forgoten Edain? -- Speculative questions often get few answers, when they aren't hot-button topics anyway
https://web.archive.org/web/20040826141 ... Position=1
Saruman - spirit and body (and other Maia points) -- Sir drinksalot is my new spirit animal
https://web.archive.org/web/20040826141 ... Position=1
Tom Bombadil -- One of the many endless speculations on old Bomby. halfir doesn't even bother appearing in this thread.
https://web.archive.org/web/20040824061 ... Position=1
Is Gandalf really an Elf? -- If Gandalf is an Elf then he CAN have an Elven ring!!!! UNCHECKMATE LORISTS (shoutout to gandalfkevin)
https://web.archive.org/web/20040826141 ... Position=1
The Valar -- A legitimate complaint phrased as a question.
https://web.archive.org/web/20040826141 ... Position=1
Elf vs. Dwarf -- No really, this isn't some sort of comparison of culture or philosophical musing, we want to know about HAND TO HAND COMBAT
https://web.archive.org/web/20040825214 ... Position=1
Legolas Really a Woman [CLOSED] -- I am leaving the CLOSED in the title because it explains why the opening post (and all subsequent posts too) from the thread opener are just GONE.
https://web.archive.org/web/20040826141 ... Position=1
Frodo/Gollum -- no capitalization, multiple colors in bold, smiley spam, yep, gonna be a good post
https://web.archive.org/web/20040826141 ... Position=1
moria ocrs and balrog -- Uinen icon on display here.
https://web.archive.org/web/20040825213 ... Position=1
Oliphaunts -- Direct from History? -- "I was wondering about where JRR Tolkien got the idea for Oliphaunts (besides, of course, their remarkable similarity to elephants" ummmmmmmm, the man in the moon? idk what else could it be besides elephants?
https://web.archive.org/web/20040825214 ... Position=1
Isengard -- "When Gandalf goes to Isengard, who opens the door for him?" @Azdiur think I've found you!
https://web.archive.org/web/20040826141 ... Position=1
Luthy’s Trivia Thread 125 -- She didn't even open this one, must have wanted a long vacation after 123 reposts.
https://web.archive.org/web/20040812234 ... Position=1
Valar relationships? -- I thought the icon in this thread was the Old Took, but it's listed here as Harry Goatleaf, whose name I don't even recognize. Also I was prepared to make a sex joke but this is an actual question.
https://web.archive.org/web/20040812235 ... Position=1
Prince Imrahil -- Thread kinda meanders, no real point.
https://web.archive.org/web/20040826141 ... Position=1
Why singing Music -- A very valuable question, one that gets at the heart of things, but since it's not about Legolas or something very few people respond.
https://web.archive.org/web/20040825214 ... Position=1
Saying things? -- Another good question, with even fewer responses. Possibly because of the TERRIBLE title. People really hadn't perfected clickbait in 2004.
https://web.archive.org/web/20040825213 ... Position=1
Aragorn and Arwen’s child - Elf? -- MeaghanB with the Ilmare icon in here. Also, if you enjoy the painful sort of humor, read this whole thread in detail. The last post is a real banger.
https://web.archive.org/web/20040826141 ... Position=1
Where does Galadriel wear Nenya? -- Another AWFUL title :headshake:
https://web.archive.org/web/20040826141 ... Position=1
Gollum Loop Holes? -- hammodius with the Huan icon in here. Also aragorn212121.
https://web.archive.org/web/20040826141 ... Position=1
Information on Berserkers? -- Posted by Berzerker. Worth reading halfir's posts though, especially if you like etymology as I do!
https://web.archive.org/web/20040812233 ... Position=1
Clifford episode is almost over, gotta stop here to redirect toddler. :smile:
STILL 2004, you'd think 2004 was 2020 at this rate:
Huan’s spirit -- Only one reply (probably cut off by archive), from Dahak who apparently had 4095 posts in 120 days DANG
https://web.archive.org/web/20041010024 ... Position=1
Decreasing lineage... -- shoutout to telekinetic_elf
https://web.archive.org/web/20041010010 ... Position=1
Sauron’s physical form -- The icons don't load in this particular thread, but Tabi geinan is Pengolodh and Tinw is Melian. Also, halfir dropping knowledge only to be followed up by "Sauron doesn't have got a body. Because he need the ring. If the ring capture the by Sauron He has got a body And he is walking on the middle-earth!" So disheartening.
https://web.archive.org/web/20041013030 ... Position=1
https://web.archive.org/web/20041013032 ... Position=1
https://web.archive.org/web/20041010005 ... Position=1
Luthy’s Trivia Thread - 143 -- A Feanor librarian icon I've never seen before wow. Doesn't make sense to me to make him a librarian of all characters but nice art as always!
https://web.archive.org/web/20050501140 ... Position=1
Also, would just like to mention that the wayback machine is spitting this error at me a lot: ADODB.Field error '800a0bcd' rather than just saying "wayback didn't archive this", not sure if that's a permanent thing or temporary. :cry:
Also also, I would just like to brag that after seeing halfir's sig [I have not fed my readers with straw, neither will I be confuted with stubble] so much, I went and looked up the origin, because I suspected it was a quote and sure enough, it's from:
COELUM TERRAE
Or The Magician's Heavenly Chaos.
By Thomas Vaughan, 1650.
The full sentence is "He that would foil me must use such weapons as I do, for I have not fed my readers with straw, neither will I be confuted with stubble." in the context of proving that magic is real and has existed since antiquity. Very very interesting.
Unfortunately the end of 2004 was merely the herald of the end times. We always knew it would be like this, but it's still miserable to go further in time and have the threads dry up to a trickle.
2005
Basic Lore Help 44 (Bring Your Questions) -- Phil_d_One (I won't even bother tagging him) in here with a Minas Tirith icon :O
https://web.archive.org/web/20050501034 ... Position=1
Saruman -- Was extremely difficult to get this one to open, I kept getting responses at a crawl time into redirect, but I refreshed enough that finally it spilled the beans for me. Thread posted in 2005 but only captured in 2018 so everything looks super weird haha
In 2006 they added some sweet little links to the forum header, and I'm going to list those first (if they load)
2006
The Fanatic Library -- No doubt there's enough here to make a separate thread, but I'll just list the front page
https://web.archive.org/web/20060615205 ... index.html
Realms of Beleriand -- Okay actually this IS a page from the library, not sure why it had its own separate link exactly.
https://web.archive.org/web/20060613213 ... eriand.asp
Frequently Asked Questions About the Lore of Middle-earth -- There's a ton of main forum threads linked here, actually! I'm going to go through them! If they open you will see them linked below! [Later: None of them load, they all spit back the same error I posted about in my final 2004 post!]
https://web.archive.org/web/20060614225 ... s/lore.asp
Guided Tours of Middle-Earth -- I clicked on a bunch of links here and everything seems to load, but the audio, while it still seems to work, is a bit wonky. Maybe that's just how it was on the internet back then, or maybe it's degrading over time, I don't know. But if you want to spend 80 minutes (estimate) on a tour of middle earth, here it is, have fun! Oh and buy our LotR merch TM
https://web.archive.org/web/20060602223 ... m/tour.asp
Lore Post Writing 101 -- If people couldn't even read the posts above them in a thread how do you expect them to read a whole post just about writing posts?
https://web.archive.org/web/20060413163 ... etutor.asp
I have to pause here at the end of the year (since, ya know, no actual main forum threads load apparently) to say that as I head to the actual forum capture, I notice the username in a thread that won't load "Turin's Roommate" hmmmmmmmm @Túrin ?
Also in the December capture you can see two of my earliest threads, much to my current chagrin, one titled Elves's birth rate, and the other Gandalf Vs. Witch-King. I'm kind of glad they don't load.
Weirdly enough, in 2007 they removed the library links from the forum header, but other than that it pretty much looks the same. I wonder why. The formerly pinned thread saying no games, surveys, etc from 2004 is also gone.
Oh dear, you've made it to 2008. I'm scared if any of my dumb newbie lore posts made it in. I can't recall much of what I said in there, but I know I got schooled by halfir at least once (as did many of us, I'm sure).
Thanks for all your work searching through the Lore forums. It saddens me how much has been lost, but I'm happy that there have been some gems discovered.
And in answer to your question about Valithon's icon, that is Norbert the Norwegian Ridgeback from Halloween. Fangorn was various dragons in either 2007 or 2008.
Some of these threads started in basic lore but were moved, but I'm not yet sure I'll be able to find them in those other places, so I'm listing them here.
2009 et al.
It's Elemental, my dear Watson... -- Awesome thread, lots of names I've listed previously appear here. Thread eventually moved to Advanced Lore, and for good reason. One of the threads most worth reading even now. Only problem is halfir's archive links still never work.
https://web.archive.org/web/20090214075 ... TID=230499
Mouth of Sauron -- These samey threads are making me think I've already opened them, but nope, this is new to me. I'm still checking every link provided in-thread, but I've yet to find one that loads.
https://web.archive.org/web/20090214075 ... TID=231311
mike's Mirkwood Military Analysis -- A fanfic? imaginative project that was moved to the locations forum.
https://web.archive.org/web/20100210112 ... TID=230836
Name Translation Into Sindarin and Quenya -- Got moved to Languages, unsurprisingly.
https://web.archive.org/web/20100209123 ... TID=231408
2010
Tom Bombadil -- An evergreen topic. halfir summarizes his massive thread with a Letters quote. I notice he had expanded his sig to include the full sentence I looked up above. Also, annoyingly, the thread is presented in reverse order. Also, it got moved to People and Races, I guess because Bombadil is a person?
https://web.archive.org/web/20100201071 ... TID=236531
Tragedy of the Ents -- Both pages load. The reverse sort order also reverses the pages, SUPER obnoxious. I have linked them in the proper order. Also moved to people and races, I guess because Ents are a race.
https://web.archive.org/web/20100201071 ... TID=235553
https://web.archive.org/web/20100206013 ... fellowship
what would happe to gollum if he didn’t die -- Only the 2nd page preserved again. Alcarinaro as Nazgul, since they renamed the Khamul SCR I think?
https://web.archive.org/web/20100221022 ... rsquot-die
Basic lore gets an Amazon link in the header in 2010 at some point. I clicked it out of curiosity, took forever to load but it finally gave me a capture of the Amazon frontpage in April 2009, which is presumably when the plaza as a whole added an affiliate link (the affiliation link was not preserved, naturally). That capture is its own bit of nostalgia, but not really relevant to the plaza, so I'm not linking it here haha.
Just For Fun... Finish the Quote -- This one loads with posts in the correct order, thank goodness. @Dimcairien Luiniel guessing you already have these, but in case not, appears to be a thread full of Halloween icons. All 5 pages load, but I'm only linking the first one, it's easy enough to click through if you want.
https://web.archive.org/web/20101031165 ... TID=237913
2011 ( the Amazon link is already gone again :confused: )
Have you made a Tolkien pilgrimage? -- A necro'd thread, originally from 2009 but resurrected to the front page in 2011. The 2nd page (out of four) is the only that does not load.
https://web.archive.org/web/20101031192 ... TID=232070
Kill count -- Another thread that takes a lot of patience to load, I think because the capture is so much later than the thread, to the point that the code visuals are messed up. halfir's emeritus icon loads though. And someone who was around would know better than I, but I think geordie and Dorwiniondil have like lore Maiar icons or something?
I'm going to pause here because I'm (re)discovering one of the oddities of the archive--what you can see depends on when you try to see it. The wayback said there was one more capture in 2015 or 2016, but couldn't load it. Approach from 2015, though, and there appear to be many more captures. So I'm going to go digging before posting more.
Okay, I see why. There's a post (that won't load) from Faldras about the New Plaza on December 8th 2012. So just like on Jan 1st 2007, you have to load the wayback from after that point to get the threads from after that point. So this first capture is from December 13th, 2012:
Wizards and Love -- Appearances by @Aigronding Mordagnir and @Almarëa Mordollwen (the first time I saw a post from her in lore)
That "Top 10 Characters" thread was fun, we should bring it back (just like we did the Rank the Valar thread)
Anyway, my Top 10 has changed slightly, I'll say I've cooled on Feanor as I've gotten older so I don't think he would hold my #1 spot any more.
Old Ranking: 1. Feanor, 2. Fingolfin, 3. Turin, 4. Turgon, 5. Mandos, 6. Finrod Felegund, 7. Beren, 8. Aragorn, 9. Tuor, 10. Fangorn
New Ranking (without giving it much thought): Fingolfin, Turin, Finrod, Beren, Mandos, Aragorn, Tuor, Fangorn, Turgon, Faramir
Apparently they were Lore Stewards - I didn't know the dates, so 2012 till whenever you tell me you stop seeing them, yes?
You should see Pengolodh, Old Took, Hugo Bracegirdle and Luthien.
@Lirimaer 2012 is too early, while the threads are listed as 2012, the actual thread captures where they appear with such icons is much later. The earliest I have noticed with those icons is from 2015, but I'll keep an eye out as I go through 2014 here. (Edit: so basically as far as I can see there are no captures between like August 2013 and December 2014 with those four posters, so the icons must have appeared sometime in that very broad range)
2014
Was Melkor neccesarily evil? -- This thread is the perfect example, the thread is from January 2014 but the capture is on May 15, 2015, and reflects the icons on that date. Pengolodh and Luthien steward icons present.
Alright kind of lame to make a separate post but the edits would have gotten confusing. I'm triangulating information as best I can. To review, I had already noted the earliest appearance of the Lore Steward icons in December of 2014, but the archives hadn't captured any threads in 2014 earlier than that, and those caught in August of 2013 had no Steward icons. I think I can narrow it down further though. There are several captures in 2014 of the lore forum as a whole (of course, I was grabbing threads off of them). The earliest forum capture that lists those four stewards as moderators is February 13th, 2004. The previous capture was December 2nd, 2013. I think we can take a safe guess that they received the icons when they were first made lore moderators (although that's not 100% certain, I suppose), so it is likely the icons date from in between those two times. I would be willing to wager further that it was the beginning of 2014, but I have no proof of that, short of doing the easy thing, and, you know, asking one of those four people. They've all been tagged here already so I won't do it again but if any of you lore Stewards remembers more specifically, it would be nice to know.
Good hunting! I appreciate the effort, Ducky, thanks.
My question now is did they last until the plaza's demise?
The stewards held their ranks till March of 2018 (aka just before the Old Plaza went down), if I recall correctly
@KingODuckingham Thanks for blast from past - I don't recall being that active in lore threads. This may have been a one off :confused:
My top 10 list is... baffling. No, I no longer think that Bill, Bert, and TOM, whose name I couldn't remember, deserve positions in the top 10, and the others have shifted substantially. Bombadil, Aule, and Boromir are probably still top 10 though.
Oh my thank you for this archive thread KingODuckingham. I don't know whether I should laugh or cry that I've spent most of the morning and into the afternoon now looking through the years I was active. Back in the years when I could remember where just about everything was in the books. Those threads asking about 'laws' and 'just/unjust,' and I still recall a fantastic thread about Gollum's psychology always fascinated me. If I only knew then what I realize now...10+ years of watching the movies whenever I caught them on TV (which felt like all the time) would turn my Tolkien memory into mush. I'm hoping it doesn't take 10 years to shake off the rust and make those kinds of posts again. :lol:
@merSILess :rofl: Thank you for that memory too, I felt so honored. If I recall correctly, there was a question someone asked about who would be more powerful with a the Ring, a balrog or an Ent? And my immediate reaction was, wait, why would an Ent want the Ring?
An Ent would want the Ring to procure a delicious cheeseburger, of course! :shrug:
