Thank you for finding these wonderful threads! I just took a brief trip down Memory Lane in some of them.

One note: The Mullet Pub thread link is incomplete (2004 RP). It’s just missing a couple of characters at the end.
I’ve always had fond memories of that particular pub. Somehow, freshly mulleted, I ended up mud wrestling with Rock and Rohanna. I have no idea how that happened.

@Lailyn, if you go to the page on the Wayback Machine where you found the old Kingdom icons, you can get the url of one of those image files and change the number at the end to 6 or 7 to load the missing icons. Should also work for the region icons. Hope that helps!

I'm talking to Narv in Admin Messages about getting the ability to put images in signatures. Narv says it is possible depending on the size of the images, so hopefully we will have the ability to use them soon!

Here's a challenge for you Shiva; I did actually do an additional cavalry rank badge not yet showing there. A greyed out Marshal one for HCMA, where the symbol was grey and the arrows/spots were the colour of the Eored they had served in. Whoa thanks @Allafyrefleorhtlig (also love the new name)! Added those and found a couple others by altering the URL in Wayback. I was very bad and hotlinked the images to Wayback for now but I'll get them saved & uploaded when I have more time!

The guy listed in Wayback as Theoden I think might be Dunhere. Or is it Theoden? though that seems a bit odd.
The white horse in the SCR post I made up above I think is Hasufel, anyone know?
The last guy in my line of SCR icons I've no idea but listed 3 possible candidates. Leaning toward Guthlaf, but I really I don't know.

@Bereth in a diplomatic attempt to explain to anyone curious while hopefully avoiding a debate;-

By around 2008-2009 the plaza numbers had consistently declined but there was a hope that the plaza could get a new influx of new activity following the release of the Hobbit films. The decision was made by the admins at the time to change the plaza to the Third age (hobbit timeline) and bring remaining players together by merging kingdoms into a four or five new forums called a ‘region’. The hope was that bringing active players together would benefit everyone by giving us all someone to play with, that different kingdoms could be brought together to create new friendships, and that regions would enable new ‘Hobbit’-themes to be added.

Rohan joined Isengard and Fangorn and became “Western Mountains”, whose icons were wolves.

So why don’t people talk about it? Why is it not even referred to in most discussions.

It was a difficult thing to facilitate; at least one ruler respectfully stepped down because they couldn’t wholeheartedly back it when they weren’t enthusiastic about it, and others (myself included) did their best to make the best they could out of an exceedingly difficult challenge.

Another tense topic is the fact that in line with usual Valinor practices of the time, the major change was kept secret until the last minute, meaning people did not have time to emotionally prepare themselves for the big change. When it was revealed in an almost fanfare “isn’t this exciting” way by the people who had been hard at work for over a year, to some it felt insensitive and callous. Some didn’t agree that is was necessary, or wanted to discuss other options.

Truth told when it went live we lost a lot of members; the objective idea of putting everyone in one place and changing the appearance of everything was well-meant, but also removed the familiarity, nostalgia and loyalty found in some forums. Most people appreciated that the attempt was done to try and keep the plaza alive and some were able to adjust and adapt, but for others it was the final nail in the coffin that drove them away.

It is also perhaps one reason so many members are excited about the return of this forum - a turning back of time to the old-style plaza pre-regions. And likely also another reason the current membership are pushing for a more transparent, member-led admin team who engage in consultation and communication before making big changes.

Apologies for the long read, but I appreciate a lot of people may be curious and I figured someone may as well explain.

Also - thanks for the neutral historical explanation of the Region era.

I don't want this thread to become a debate ground for Plaza history/politics/etc. but I also agree we're preserving history and its good to have some background info for those who were not around then.

@Bereth - if you're curious, I know that one of the regions had bird icons for a bit (Eriador, I think but I won't attempt to list which kingdoms were part of it). You can check them out in the Rivendell archive thread.

@Elarith I found an earlier version of the Who Would You Be thread that I started back in 2004. Unfortunately, that link also doesn’t work. I’ll see if I can find one that does, but it’s hit or miss to find the right day that may have actually captured the archive.

I also found a KP that listed SCRs as well as who received them. The names loaded, but the pics did not.

If you find any threads that load as text without images let me know. I've got a bunch of Meduseld/Riddermark threads saved as html on my PCs.

They span Sept 2005 to 2009 (with some gaps due to me not being around).

I also have some threads from 2010-2014

I've retrieved quite a few SCR and Special Award icons.
Working on a web page as that's seems the easiest way (for me at least) to get them to you.

@Aodh Hammerhelm I'd love to peruse the threads you have saved. Any cavalry threads or Dragon Rooms or Throne Rooms with assassination attempts? Or pubs which burned down?

@Allafyrefleorhtlig It's rather sad that we have to reference multiple pubs that burned down. I'm sure it's been at least three. We are either a nation of arsonists or very clumsy!

@Eléowyn Interestingly I was never in a pub when one burned down, I always arrived just in time for the aftermath (it wasn't me, I didn't do it, it was like that when I got there). I was often however around during the multiple attempts to assassinate Eowyn; I'm sure on at least one occasion someone came in to kill her and the whole thread response was something along the lines of 'take a ticket and wait your turn, we're still dealing with the last one'. I always loved it when a newbie came into those threads to pledge fealty all serious-like without reading the earlier posts and poor Eowyn would have to respond as patiently as possible while simultaneously holding off a Wight or Nazgul or ambitious minion.

Things Rohan is known for; horses, badgers, Dr Pepper, badger-burgers, the cavalry, endless assassination attempts against Eowyn, spontaneously combusting pubs.

I'm going to work on restoring them to cyberspace via my website. They can then be transferred to the Plaza Server.

I've had success with 2006 Tub Race as a test thread. It works but at 11 pages long overloads my phone.

The older threads in htm should be a doddle.

Later ones were in secure MHTML, so far these fail to show after being uploaded. I may have to convert them?

@Eléowyn I found the earlier thread after my last post here, but yes, can’t get in. WBM is just taunting us. Didn’t know about the KP version though, I’ll keep a look out for that one.

Also I don’t know if anyone else is finding this, but I seem to have more success going into older threads via the WBM’s Plaza archives section on the old site rather than trying to go directly back to, say, 2004.

Also also I will keep an eye out for Cav and pub arson threads for @Allafyrefleorhtlig
