Gazing into the Abyss - The Sacrilegium Archives

Taking a cue from Moriel’s “Tavari Tales” thread, I’ve decided to start the arduous (some may say Sisyphean) task of compiling all the major arcs of the characters I’ve created here on the plaza. The past few weeks I’ve taken to cataloguing how many of them actually exist and the list is well over 50 at this point there seems to be no slowing down. While having so many characters has never been an issue for me (it’s like writing a book after all), having a repository where I can catalogue, detail, and collate their stories is invaluable.

How do I plan on organizing and filing everything away you ask (because of course you asked)? Each character (or groups of characters) will get their own post where each post is linked to the corresponding story arcs. Also, I’ll include a Spotify playlist I’ve created for each, the image serving as inspiration and the icon I use for them, and a brief bio. Some characters’ stories will intertwine (Walpurga and Vipsania) so all of their story arcs will appear in the same post. Sometimes multiple characters will appear in the same arc so instead of linking multiple times, the arc will be found in the “lead character’s” post.

So without further ado…

Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!

Frost

First up, we have Frost (also known as The Man in Black and Mr. Spider) the Black Númenórean. Born to mildly affluent parents, Frost showed an interest in the arcane from an early age. He was sent by his mother a politician in the upper echelons of power in Umbar, to live with the Snowmen of Frozen Wastes. There he lived for many years, learning the subtle magics of the hard, cold people. It was here that he was given the nickname Frost, after he stayed out all night on a hunt and came back to the village with his hair covered in frost and ice. While there, he also met a man who called himself Gætir, the Mountainkeeper. This man, if man he be at all, was a cultist and worshiper of the Witch-King. He showed Frost the many avenues of power that the Witch-King offered, and Frost was easily swayed to join the mystery cult with his strange mentor. He was given tattoos, powerful markings that lent him power and connection to the ancient Lord of the Nazgûl. While living with the Snowmen, Frost met Iduna and the pair fell in love. Frost was forced to return to Umbar though, barely learning she was with child. Seeing his determination to go back and bring the woman and her squalling babe to Umbar, his father delivered him a forged letter, saying that both mother and child had perished. Broken by grief and anger, it was then that Frost began to search for a way to stave off death and even bring people back from beyond the spheres of the world. His searching led him to become a pirate, much to his mother’s distaste who wanted her son to enter the world of Umbarian politics and rise through the ranks of the Great Houses, particularly that of her own, House Castamir. For a time, he was able to stave off the ambitions of his mother, the Witch-King, and even the Web, living in Dale with a woman he planned on marrying, however the call of the Shadow was to great to be ignored. He was able to win renown through his many ventures and expeditions into lands unknown to many in the Black Lands. On one of his trips, he found out about a sect of elves that are utterly disconnected from any of the elves still remaining in Middle-Earth. Ancient, unscrupulous, and unknowable, he sought them out through the use of a dangerous spell that sapped his lifeforce. In the end though, he found one, a creature that called themselves “The Everdusk”. He made a deal with the elf and was granted knowledge and wisdom for a price that would be named later. Despite his connection to the Witch-King and the powers he offered, Frost has recently found himself more and more drawn to a different Nazgûl: Adûnaphel, known as the Quiet Lady and the Knight of Umbar. To what end their partnership will go Frost can only guess, though he knows he is in the middle of some power struggle between the two Númenórean lords. He has also opened (or reopened) the old Necromancer’s Guild and turned it into a proving ground for perspective recruits for the Black Host, further ingratiating himself with the movers and shakers of the Black Lands. He has also been touched by a thing known only as "The Web" a force of nature, or perhaps outside of nature, that has granted him certain abilities, spiders and webs and a more persuasive talent for manipulation and control. He and his partner and companion, Zôrzimril, have recently begun a journey together, learning to shift their forms from one gender to the other, adding another layer of complexity to already complex individual.

The Frostdóttirs as they have come to be called colloquially.

Walpurga

Next is Walpurga, a young Rohir. Born to a single mother in a small village, speculation never stopped about who her father was and where he was now. Walpurga was not like many of the people in the small village of Benton. She was tall, taller than most of the denizens with midnight black hair and blue eyes, gifts from her absent father. One day she found a book in her mother’s things, a strange thing as her mother could not read. Walpurga used the book to teach herself the slow, arduous process of reading and writing by herself. Isolated as she was, Walpurga befriended the animals of the farm, the pigs, the horses, and the wildlife that lived around edges of society; skunks, badgers, raccoons, weasels, and the like. Finally though, things came to a head when her mother found the book. She berated Walpurga and said many things that a mother ought to never say to her daughter, especially when her daughter’s only crime was to be curious and want to better herself. A rift formed between mother and daughter that never healed. When she came of age, Walpurga set out to Edoras in hopes of joining the legendary Cavalry and start anew. However the fabled military life did not fit Walpurga and soon she found herself even more isolated and alone than before, with only a trio of skunks kits and a baby badger. Random chance, though, saved Walpurga's life. One day whilst out exploring the city of Edoras, she came across a man that, inexplicably, she assumed could be her father. Surviving the ensuing embarrassing encounter, she was invited (more she blurted out the request) to join Kamion, a Ranger from Minas Tirith, on his journey north, freeing her from the suffocating confines of Rohan.

Finnbarr Galedeep

Finnbarr Galedeep was born before the rising of the moon. He lived with his mother and father in Alqualondë as simple fisherfolk. That changed with Fëanor and the Ñoldor arrived. His family was killed and young Finnbarr, barely nine years old at the time, was left alone. He was found later that night by Davos Seaworth and taken in as his adopted son. It was with Davos that Finnbarr learned the art of freediving, quickly gaining renown for the depths he was able to reach as well as the treasures that he was able to find. However, with the rising of the sun, Finnbarr decided it was time to track down the person that killed his family, disregarding Davos’ pleas to let that Valar’s judgement stand. Finnbarr swore his own terrible oath then, vowing that no one would stand in his way to finding justice and that he alone would administer this justice. Separating from his adoptive father, Finnbarr set out in the wider world of Beleriand, acting as a wanderer until he came to the courts of Thargelion. He lived there for many years all the while investigating and searching, rising in favor of the king, Caranthir and earning the trust of Tavari. That paradise was brought low though, by the designs of Morgoth and Thargelion fell, despite Finnbarr’s attempts to stand and face the unnumbered hordes. Here he met the man that would become his best friend, Verco. They stood valiantly against the orcish and trollish hordes, but they were overwhelmed and Thargelion was lost. They traveled then, to Hithlum and entered the service of Maedhros, Caranthir’s older brother. Many of Finnbarr’s exploits during the First Age are shrouded in mystery and he is loathed to tell even his closest friends. Something did happen though, and as a result of his oath, he has been banned from setting foot on Aman ever again until his fëa should pass to the Halls of Mandos. After the War of Wrath, he and his father reconciled, but his friendship with Tavari fractured when he called her a coward for refusing to the seas. At the advent of the Second Age, Finnbarr was amongst those ferrying people across the sea to the newly risen island of Númenor including Tyelpelfindis with whom he developed a rapport. Years down the line, Finnbarr came to care for a young boy, Númenyraumion, a boy not much older than he when he lost his parents. The lad’s parents had sailed west, leaving their young child to fend for himself. Finnbarr, in an attempt to repay the debt he owed to Davos for raising him, attempted to do so with Númenyraumion, but after a few years it became apparent that Finnbarr was not the kind of parent that the boy needed. Instead, he was taken in by Tyelpelfindis. Finnbarr was present at the destruction of Númenor, piloting one of the last boats of refugees back to the mainland as the island was swallowed in the tumults. He did not set to sea for another hundred years, terrified by all that he'd seen that day. He journeyed with Númenyraumion for some time until it was clear that the younger elf wanted to travel on his own. In the year 1087 he met and rescued Saererys from a sinking ship, soon a romance bloomed between them.

Númenyraumion

Númenyraumion, the Son of the Western Storm, (or Anadûrohin in Adunaic) was born to parents who would have been better suited to have a pet rather than a child. Within a few short years of his birth, his parents decided it was time for them to sail west, leaving their nine-year-old son on the island of Númenor by himself. He was fostered for some years by Finnbarr Galedeep, an elf of note who visited the island often. However, his time with Finnbarr was tempestuous and tumultuous. His life was on the great island, not on the shores of Middle-Earth. He was fostered, then, by Tyelpelfindis who taught him to harness the power of his voice, a talent he had shown an inkling of at an early age. He learned to sing, to tell stories, and to listen to the tales of others and weave them into music the way it had been done in the elder days. Númenyraumion flourished on the island, despite the growing distaste for his presence. As the mood of the island changed, so did he appear in public less and less, still unwilling to leave his home. During a masquerade, he met Anárion and fell in love. Their friendship and relationship was a rare one, but one that still flowered in the midst of the decay of Númenor. On the day the world changed forever, it was Númenyraumion that dragged Anárion to their ships, lest they drown. He was separated from his friend and lover when he decided to stay in Lindon with his family while Anárion went south with his to found the kingdom of Gondor. His time in Lindon was a happy one. His foster mother gave up her spirit and his foster sister was taken from him to travel south the lands of Umbar, a place Númenyraumion was very unwilling to go. It was in the closing years of the Second Age that the tragedy of The Sun and the Storm came to an end. Anárion was killed in the siege of Barad-dûr. Númenyraumion coming too late to save him. At the dawn of the Third Age and in the throes of despair, Númenyraumion contemplated suicide, ultimately unable to commit to the act. He forsook a stable life and began to wander, learning and hearing tales from everyone he came across. Occasionally he would re-enter civilization and transcribe the tales he heard, but never divulging his own stories. Recently, after having a prophetic dream, he had come to Ost Halatir and enlisted as a member of the army, fearing what is to come.

Fleeg Phlegmson

*sigh*
Up next, we have Fleeg. Fleeg is a goblin with a royal lineage. You wouldn’t know it to look at him though, or hear him speak, or smell him. Fleeg is middle aged for a goblin (however old that actually means is anyone’s guess), the son of Phlegm Fleegsdottir and an ignominious father who has been all but forgotten in the mists of time. Through his mother, Fleeg (and his older brother Mig), are direct descendants of Fleeg the First, the first goblin and absent rule of all goblinkind. Fleeg is likely the most disappointing of all the descendants of the cruelest goblin that ever struck fear into the hearts of his foes. Fleeg fancies himself a businessgoblin but in reality is often bailed out by his brother Mig who is often in-between bouts of wanting to kill his brother and wanting to beat some common sense into him. He was temporarily in service to a vampire called he simply called “Master” but the vampire’s continued absence from the Black Lands soon led Fleeg’s mind to wandering. Having failed at creating a United Bank of Mordor (largely because the scheme was poorly executed) he decided to use his talents to create a murder hornet apiary. Whether or not this idea was merely stupid or in fact disastrous still remains to be seen. Fleeg and his best friend/worst enemy/CHaOSBro, Reg, have recently gone into business together. Much to the chagrin, bafflement, and utter annoyance of friends and family, they worked together to build and run the “Uhhhhhhhh Spa”, the first of it’s kind in the entire history of Mordor and evil in general. Having sunk most of his fortune, the part that Mig allows him to use anyway, into this venture, he is desperate for it to work. Somewhere in the midst of all of these business ventures, Fleeg and Reg have found time to travel, going as far south so far as Umbar and as far north at Angmar, including a detour the Bruinen for a fishing contest. He also recently become enraptured with another goblin, the wondrously bureaucratic Búbosha, someone his uptight, unfriendly, and unhappy mother might approve of. It remains to be seen, though, if anything should come of such an enrapturement because of all the debt he has accumulated, both in terms of finances and in terms of social debt. It is unknown what will kill him first, the murder hornets, Reg, Búbosha, or Swiltang, but it is likely that the goblin’s days are numbered if he doesn’t stop acting like an idiot. He has also been made aware quite recently of the existence of a Fleeg Fan Club, what he plans on doing with this knowledge or if he understands the implications of this remain to be seen.

Jorgy Underash

Jorgy Underash, perhaps the strangest hobbit that ever hobbited. Jorgy was not born a hobbit. Indeed, the oddest (and most adorable) hobbit in the Shire was born a lava snake in the black lands of Mordor. Through circumstances beyond his control, let’s be honest it was out of everyone’s control because the will of the die is too strong, he was transformed first into an orc then covered in ash a la Captain America and emerged a strange, very confused hobbit. Feeling the natural pull of the Shire, Jorgy then made his way there. There were many things he needed to learn in order to fit in as a hobbit, like what second breakfast was, what elevensies actually was, how to wear clothing (preferable before actually reaching the Shire) and how to walk properly. Many of these things, aside from the clothes wearing, he learned from his new best friends in the entire world: Pearl Brockhouse and Silas Hardwick. Without Pearl and Silas, Jorgy would be a hopeless mess instead of just a mess. Together, they’ve taught him to read and write, how to cook (nothing more complicated that muffins at this point), and how to set up a house (which Jorgy is still getting a hang of). Each day, Jorgy hopes to learn more about what it means to be a hobbit and how to fit in better with his new community. Elsewise, there isn’t much to tell about Jorgy, he gets lost very easily (and when he gets lost, he gets very lost), and loves the idea of racing. Despite having raced against his will while he was a lava snake, running and hopping and skipping are some of Jorgy’s favorite activities. Also, he recently attempted to join the Shire Detective Agency but his attempts at solving crimes as been somewhat limited (mostly due to the fact that the first crime he tried to solve was his own, accidental crime). Still, he hopes to learn more and have as good a time as any, this includes buying a goat from the Market.

Sarghêst & Horna

Born in the harsh environs of the Dead Marshes, orcish brothers Sarghêst and Horna learned from a very young age how difficult and brutal life could be. Two of seven children, Sarghest and Horna were the only two from their brood to reach maturity. Some of their siblings were killed in raids between clans or territory disputes, others were killed by the grim nature of the marshes themselves. They learned quickly that to live in a world like this, they needed to be better than anyone around them, and that meant exercising their minds as much as their bodies. By sheer happenstance, the two brothers were on a raiding party, a loose collection of orcs and goblins in the territory, that happened on a shipment of scrolls and books bound for the library of Minas Tirith. While there rest of the party were sorely disappointed, these two brothers knew they had found a gold mine. They immersed themselves in philosophy, art, rhetoric, musical and literary theory, anthropology, and linguistics. Within a very short time, due to their persuasive arguments and brutally violent abilities, Sarghêst and Horna found themselves the co-leaders of their ragtag coalition. But their aspirations were greater than being the war chiefs of mud huts and crocodiles. They turned their attentions outside the great swamps. Horna looked north, toward the great and terrible kingdom of Angmar while Sarghêst looked south to the realm of Mordor. While they respected one another, after and orcish fashion, they knew that to truly achieve the heights they wished they would have to find their way separately. So, they set out, each going taking their own path. The brothers still kept in contact with one another and rejoiced in the triumphs of the other, hoping one day to be able to find a way to reunite and rule a true kingdom of orcs together. Horna quickly fell in with the blacksmiths of Carn Dûm, using his knowledge of bog iron and crafting to advance until he caught the notice of Yarltang, who commissioned a new war hammer for the intrepid orc, promising great things should he succeed in impressing the mercurial boldog. Sarghêst found his way into the Black Host, Mordor’s army. There he was tested and approved of by none other than Swiltang, the brother of Yarltang. While moving quickly through the lower ranks, Sarghêst has yet to make the impact he had hoped, but ever the patient brother, he bids his time.

 I meant for everyone to get the reference! The brothers will do a fair bit of crushing, driving, and hearing lamentations once that gets around.

As far as the animals go, Carni will get her own entry, as well as Mokkan and hopefully Osa but the other ones are too small and don't really have a story of their own... yet.

Arioch

Born Felmenar under the light of the Two Trees in Valinor, Arioch was captured during the Dagor Bragollach and turned into a vampire by none other than Thuringwethil herself. As an elf, Arioch was prone to violence, delighting in contests of strength and agility as well as shows of force. While in Valinor, he trained under Tulkas until he determined he could not learn what he craved from the Vala. Instead he began to gravitate toward Fëanor and his sons. While never directly supporting them, he helped convince his distant cousin, Finrod, that going to Beleriand in pursuit of Morgoth was the correct and just thing to do. He showed great prowess and skill during the battles, earning him a valued position in the court of Tol Sirion. After he was turned, the firebrand was shown the delights of leisure and hedonism, things he embraced at full tilt. He stayed in Tol Sirion through it’s occupation by Mairon, one of the members of Thuringwethil’s entourage, but when the castle was thrown down, he fled to the east, forsaking the rest of the war as he began to establish his nest in the northern reaches of Middle-Earth. At some point, the vampire lord was contacted by Mairon, using the name Annatar, and pressed into service again, receiving the same position as his former mistress, that of messenger between Annatar and his newest servants, the Ringwraiths. Still incredibly skilled with the blade, Arioch fought alongside Annatar during the wars to come, even managing to convince Carníheniel to send some of her spawn. When Mairon was captured by the Númenóreans, Arioch’s role as messenger became vital as he was able to move secretly between the Ringwraiths as they coordinated and maintained the vast kingdom their black master had left behind. Upon Mairon’s return and subsequent war of the last of the Free People, Arioch commanded a legion of vampires, many of his own creations, bats, and harpies. When the war was lost, though, Arioch was forced to flee alone back to the north where he slowly rebuilt his power base. In the Third Age, Arioch maintained a distance from any of the powers that rose, preferring to keep to himself. Eventually, Arioch came upon Keziah, a vampire like himself but one that had been born a vampire rather than turned. He pledged himself to her in a terrible ceremony and vowed that when the stars and planets came round again, they would be wed. When the Witch-King rose in strength, Arioch chose to return to his side and aid him in his wars against Arnor, becoming vital in battle and in reconnaissance. When the Witch-King took the city of Minas Ithil and transformed it, he used Arioch as a herald between the still occupied fortress of Carn Dûm and Minas Morgul, acquainting himself with the two elven sorceresses he left in charge. He maintains nests near both cities, decadent manses hidden in rock and shadow. He has few avowed enemies, they’re all dead, and few allies, finding them all too boring. He does, however, have a great ambition: to find, subjugate, and rule all the remaining vampires in Middle-Earth, and he will do anything to achieve that goal.

Ñarmotar

Ñarmotar is the eldest child, and only son, of Penlod of Gondolin and Queen Lirsinry of the Mablui Avari. He grew up in the palace, receiving all the benefits his station allowed him: the best tutors, the best training, and the most freedom to come and go within the city itself. Despite his privilege, Ñarmotar grew up to be a man of the people, often shirking his tutoring sessions in favor of going adventuring in the Encircling Mountains with his “lowborn” companions. His father did not approve of his many activities but never forbad his son from his comraderies. His mother encouraged him, saying that to be the true heir apparent of the Mablui, he must be well known to his people, though she did often encourage him to make more friends among the more wealthy and noble circles. Ñarmotar’s life of ease and luxury came to an abrupt end with the Fall of Gondolin. He and his people were among the survivors of the terrible day, but his father and mother were both killed in the ensuing conflict. He was now the King of the Mablui and Lord of the Houses of the Tower and Frost, two positions he felt woefully unable to fill. Despite his upbringing and the training he received, he was plagued by doubts and indecision after the Fall. He and his folk became wanderers, eschewing the offer to settle at the Mouths of Sirion. In hindsight this indecision was what saved his people from potential slaughter. While many tried to laud him as wise and farseeing, he publicly refuted this, calling his actions delayed and mere chance that they survived. Grumblings began, but for the most part, all his people stayed with him, preferring the known to the unknown in the wake of the destruction wrought in Beleriand. Eventually, they traveled to the Blue Mountains and settled there, with the permission and aid of the dwarves they built Bar-in-Gonagwelu, Home of Stone and Air. When Beleriand sank, the Mablui reemerged and began welcoming refugees. Ñarmotar, more and more, desired to give up ruling and pursue his passion in study and learning. To this end, he appointed a council that would run the day to day inner workings of the city, one which would henceforth be elected on a 10 year term of office, while he began creating the Lindon Guild of Anthropological Studies. He was able to build dozen of libraries and contributed to several universities as far as the island of Númenor and furthered the study of comparative mythology and folklore. At the end of the Second Age, after the fall of Númenor and the return of Sauron, Ñarmotar uncharacteristically lead his people alongside the forces of Lindon, Imladris, and Lórien. His people suffered heavy casualties and even three thousand years have not recovered. Ñarmotar blames himself for this, believing it was his failure to lead that put his people in jeopardy. He withdrew from daily life, leaving all the ruling to the council without any of his input. He stayed isolated for nearly two thousand years, only coming out in public when his duties as Guildmaster demanded it. Only recently has he begun to appear more, occasionally corresponding with Círdan and Elrond. He has renewed his kingship, ruling alongside the council as two heads of government. He has devoted himself to the preservation of his people, at any cost, even if that cost could strain his alliances with the other elven kingdoms.

Ñarmotar is going to be an interesting case, a much greyer character than I've done thus far, not a bad guy, not always a good guy. He should be interesting to write, hopefully he's just as interesting to read!

Yoshiyo

Yoshiyo, the daughter of a weaver and a tollgate keeper, was born in the waning years of the Eldar. Her parents were Sindar that were born after the fall of Sauron at the end of the Second Age. She has spent nearly her entire life in Lindon, more accurately, Yoshiyo has spent most of her time in the libraries of Lindon. From a very early age Yoshiyo was a voracious leaner and avid reader. She devoured book after book on hundreds of subjects. Her parents, while not wealthy by any measure, managed to acquire her tutors, books, and schooling to satisfy their daughter’s appetite. Despite Yoshiyo’s love of learning, she had great difficulty in finding her specialty which resulting in her losing out on several opportunities to study at universities or on behalf of several of the guilds throughout Lindon. In what could only be called a meet cute, Yoshiyo met Milarcia whilst out people watching and sketching. Soon, the pair began to court. Yoshiyo believed she had found her muse and tried to enter the art guild. This ended in failure, however, when the guildmasters found her sculpting techniques derivative and formulaic. Yoshiyo was discouraged but refused to stop trying to find where she fit in. Another chance encounter with Ñarmotar on one of his rare trips out of Bar-in-Gonagwelu helped her gain entrance into the Lindon Guild of Anthropological Studies where she found her passion for linguistics. She spent more and more time in the libraries of Lindon after this, so much so that she began to consider Nyárener as a second father, who often made sure that Yoshiyo was taking care of herself. Sadly, her devotion to studying and research took on a toll on her relationship with Milarcia who felt like she was being ignored more and more once Yoshiyo had given up pursuing the life of an artist and poet. Eventually, she left Yoshiyo, deciding it was best for her in the end. Yoshiyo was devastated and, despite still attempting to present a thesis to the guildmasters, ended up putting herself in harms way by refusing to eat or sleep. It took the combined will of her parents and Nyárener to pull her out of the manic state she found herself in. She decided to take a sabbatical from study for a time and travel. She visited the Shire where she was exposed to the Hobbit way of life (being very, very fascinating by the food and the language), after the Shire, she traveled south to Dunland were she learned all she could from the Dunlendings and the language they spoke. Finally, she arrived in Rohan when she received word that a ruin had been found not far from where she was. She raced back to Lindon and wrote a thesis based on the languages she had encountered on her trip and their potential connection. She was accepted into the Guild at long last and was even chosen to lead the archeological expedition.

Some of you might have noticed, but I have done some extra work on icons (I went down a rabbit hole and never really came back up) for certain characters and the characters that share their story but won't be getting an archive entry themselves.

Frost: Added Young Frost and Frost's persona as "the Man in Black", also added a new story arc called "A Skin for Dancing In" and added two guest posts to "A Study in Ivory"

Finnbarr: I feel like Finnbarr needs some extra explanation here. Finnbarr started off as a normal sailor type elf. I gave him tattoos and a heavily muscular appearance in the start of Numey's "L’appel du Vide" story arc but didn't think too much of it. Later, during the masque, I decided he was old enough, and had had enough stuff happen to him, that he had earned a very thick beard. Then, during Moriel's Lhûn Boat Racing, I determined he could talk to sealife. See where this is going? A heavily muscled, tattooed, bearded guy who spends most of his time in the water and talks to animals? It dawned on me after I watched the newest edition of Justice League that I had essentially created Aquaman and had to create some icons for this new discovery. Also newly added under Finnbarr is Verco, Delynna, and the mysterious, yet-to-appear Saraerys

Númenyraumion: Added Young Numey, around the time his parents abandoned him and sailed West (can't think many were too happy with them when they got there)

Fleeg: Added Fleeg the First and the yet-to-appear Fleeg the Alchemist, turning Fleeg's entry into an entry for the entire goblinoid line of Fleegs

Sarghêst & Horna: Added good boi Hoppla, not sure when or if his icon will be used much, but it's there in all the derpy glory

Added a few (hahahahaha) icons to the OP, just to show off my poor iconing skills

Taking a pause from the myriad story arc updates to talk about something that is very personal to me and my characters. A bit of background first, yesterday was the first International Asexuality Day and I, myself, am ace. It was wonderful to finally have a bit of a spotlight placed on a part of my identity that often gets overlooked or ignored by the media and the world of literature at large. Noting this, I wanted to come out and say something that has always been true behind the scenes of my characters here on the Plaza. It’s well known, I hope, that my characters run the gambit of sexuality from Frost (pan/poly) to Walpurga and Vipsania (lesbian) to Numey (gay). I’ve always like playing characters within the LGBTQIA+ community because we are so under represented and I have a massive playground to play in and people to interact with (some that might have never thought playing a character whose sexuality differs from theirs). Also, I want to be the change I want to see in the world. I want to help shine a spotlight on characters that don’t subscribe to the whole patriarchal, cishet norm because we deserve to have as rich a fantasy world as we do real one.

I can now announce with confidence and pride that instead of the heteronormative assumption that unless noted otherwise any given character is straight, all of my characters, unless otherwise noted, are ace. In fact, the only character who is identifiable as straight is Finnbarr Galedeep. It is important that we have diversity amongst our characters here on the Plaza and continue that trend in the world of fantasy/horror/sci-fi/etc and beyond. I’ve mentioned this to a few trusted others, but I believe it is time that I announced it here and give myself the confidence and courage to continue.

Asexuality is perhaps one of the most ignored and misunderstood identities within the LGBTQIA+ community. Instead of a single identity, asexuality is a spectrum ranging from demisexual to asexual and potentially dozens and dozens more. It is often ignored because “how do we portray a lack of sexual interest or desire?” or because people outside of the spectrum (known collectively as allosexual) believe that asexuality is the same as celibacy. It isn’t. I am still attempting to discover where exactly I fit in on the spectrum, it’s a lot of trial and error and navel gazing, but I have confidence I will get there. So why is diversity important, as it relates to asexuality? If I can portray a dozen or more different variations of the ace identity, normalize it so that it’s not so alien or strange or ignored, perhaps other people out there can see themselves and will have a less difficult time understanding who they are and if they can see themselves in the things they read/listen to/watch then they will be more encouraged to be open and curious.

I hope this adds depth to my characters and that their struggles are more understandable, more recognizable and more enjoyable.

Hey @Call of Bearthulhu I just want to say this is a really good little post. Ace folks are grievously underrepresented and as another queer RPer I just want to throw clear support behind your glorious, newly established, asexual hegemony.

Much love :smooch:

Yes!! I love this! Thank you for making this post and for all your efforts to write characters that are real, whole, and representative of more than the binary and "default". I can with confidence and happiness say that your doing so has helped me explore more identities in my own characters, whether it be aspects of them that were always there but I didn't feel I could explore or would be allowed to explore/show openly, or digging deeper into a character to think how expanding my idea of who they are in this way would in fact make them truer to themselves.

Pokeing in to throw support hugs and support for this in general and cookies too, because everyone loves and needs cookies. :smooch:

On a side note, usually, I tend to assume that everyone's characters' are somewhere on the LGBTQIA+ spectrum unless otherwise indicated. Hope this sentence made sense, my brain is out of focus.

Eldûrien/Krakzun

Sometime close the reappearance of the Nazgûl in the Third Age, a young Mablui elf named Ahyinde went missing from her home. Her kin searched for and wide for years but eventually came to realize their search was fruitless and were forced to give the maiden up for dead. In reality, she had been kidnapped by agents of one of the Nine (there are many differing theories as to which one of them it was because outside of the Witch-King almost nothing is known of their movements and activities) and brought to Mordor. There, in the black lands, experiments were performed on her and she endured hundreds of nameless tortures until finally her spirit broke. Once this was achieved, an orc with a hint of magical prowess, going by the name Krakzun was brought in the torture chamber. The pair were forced to bond if either of them were to survive. During the months, years, or decades they spent together a bond did form. They hated each other (as elves and orcs are wont to do) but came to value the skills and abilities of the other. Finally, the finally stage of the experiments began. Of old, there were a race, or subrace, or orcs called the boldogs, orcs of supreme power, both physical and magical, but most of that species had passed into myth and legend. Hoping to curry favor with the Dark Lord, this Ringwraith hoped to recreate one. They did not use the blood of Ziltang, the progenitor of Swiltang and Yarltang, as a binding agent for the procedure. Again, there are many differing theories as to why this was. Either the boldog sire could not be found, refused to cooperate, or the Ringwraith believed he could create a race of boldogs independent of the monster it is not known. The experiment failed, predictably. Ahyinde and Krakzun both died in the process. But something was created. A nameless entity that was both Ahyinde and Krakzun at once and altogether something else. The Mablui elf changed her name, choosing the name Eldûrien, Lady of the Dark Stars as her new name. The new entity, being both people simultaneously, could only allow one of them to occupy the space the being inhabited at a time. When Krakzun was out and about, Eldûrien only existed within his mind, and when Eldûrien was out and about, Krakzun only existed in her head. They were two beings, two minds, two bodies, and two skill sets, crammed into a single, much more powerful and much more vile creation. Rather than serve their creators, the pair destroyed everything around them, cutting a swath of fire and compulsion through the southlands through Rhûn and into the far north, bend on killing or controlling anything and anyone they could until they came on Frost, a ship captain who also possessed a unique source of power. Like recognizing like, they agreed to work with the mortal to further their mutual goals. Together they became wealthy and feared: the corsair and his witches. However, through all the destruction and manipulation, the goal of the entity that bore the names Eldûrien and Krakzun remained the same: find and destroy the Nazgûl that bungled their creation.

Also a little note here, if anyone sees a story arc (one that's begun or one that hasn't yet) that they'd like to take part in please feel free to ask. There are only a few that I'm planning on being completely private so anyone is welcome to tag along with any one of my characters

And while we're at it, updated Fleeg's "A Spider's Account..." arc with entries 5 and 6 as well as giving the arc a fuller description the idiocy to come

I'm just stumbling in to say that the first association to the title Havohej Pantocrator were the many, icons and mosaics of Christ Pantocrator, but especially this one from the Hagia Sophia. Now you simply have to insert a mosaic in this story

Well, you would not be wrong. The title comes from this song (CW: the lyrics could be very offensive to some so click at your own peril) a favorite of mine by Behemoth which in turn was 100% inspired by the images of Christ Pantocrator (just inverted). Mosaics could very well come to play a role in the story.

So I finally looked in here again and saw your post about your characters (which is sorta old news now? Sorta not it's plaza things move slow) and I have to say I absolutely love it and honestly I love that even though characters are pan/poly etc that they can absolutely be ace and I look forward even MORE than I did before to reading your characters.

I am honestly super excited to see more LGBTQA+ representation here on the plaza in stories and I'm also interested to see how the entity you came up with plays into that as well they sound like an exceptionally interesting character.

@Fuin Elda ace is definitely a wide spectrum isn't it? Hopefully with more recognition and more appearences in film, literature, music, etc. it can become better understood by everyone (both within and without). I, too, am very excited to see more LGBTQIA+ representation of the plaza because change starts with us, right? If the fans demand it and create it on their own, others will take notice and we can finally get some much needed diversity. Not to say there isn't an increasing amount in the last decade or so, but still, we want MOAR.

Meanwhile... updates!

Gísli

Deep in the forests and prairies of the Wilderlands there lives the Beornings. Solidary people, they often do no intermingle with other men or, even, themselves. Gísli is one such man. Nearly his fifties, Gísli prefers spending his time in the form of the bear, the gift given to all skinchangers by the grace of Yavanna. He is more solitary than most, having been raised by a father and mother that did not see the point of sending their son into the wider world of humans, elves, dwarves, and orcs. They taught him all he needed to know, the ways of the forest, the ways of the mountains, and the ways of the fields. While dealing with people is inevitable sometimes, Gísli has made avoiding his brethren an art form. He was perfectly content with his life, a simple existence of hunting, fishing, foraging, and hibernating. Nothing and no one could challenge him for dominance in his chosen domain. The day a loup garou entered into his home and began killing indiscriminately, Gísli knew his quiet life was over. Despite wanting to stay in his home and let the humans deal with the abomination, he knew it was his duty to take on the beast. Now, having entered the world of humans once more, Gísli is forced more and more to find the line between beast and man in a world getting increasingly dangerous and hostile toward his simple way of living. Monsters, men, and natural problems force him to grow and learn who he really is.

Story Arcs

Fenris Kindir: the story of the loup garou, a werewolf is loose and on a killing spree

Trollhammaren: the story of the troll, a marauding beast comes out of the haunted forest and Gísli is forced to deal with it

Johnny Guitar: the story of the bean sídhe, a ghostly spirit is haunting the fells of Gísli's home, who is it singing to?

@Winddancer :heartrainbow: It's a shame that a lot of people weren't able to or didn't feel safe, likewise I am so glad that NuPlaza has become a place where we can be free in our expressions of ourselves and write characters that reflect all aspects of who we are or what we're interested in. I hope (I know) this place will continued to be a safe space for all of us to be who we were meant to be

In the meantime

Updates abound! Far, far too many for me to mention them all here. Sufficive to say there have been a lot of additions to existing stories as well as new arcs added for Frost, Ñarmotar, Finnbarr, Numey, and Jorgy
