Rangers are welcome to show up at the actual Houses of Healing if they wish right? It is those who don't do anything and write as if a wound never happened that should be a concern.

Karis - of course they are, everyone is. :-) I just thought (if my memory serves me right) that for this campaign you had NPC healers with the rangers and that most injuries will be treated on the field, and only the most seriously injured will be sent back to the Houses of Healing.

Nessa, yup! They ARE a ways removed from the City after all...

But don't worry. You'll have at least one person coming to visit the HoH I think. *plots*

Sorry @Silmarë (you sneaky sneaky), @Arnyn ! I've been engaged in a very frustrating game of I email with questions and try to get set up for classes starting in a few weeks, and then get no response, or told to email the next person, and set up a meeting with someone else who also won't answer their email. It's been a bit draining and has rather stolen my focus.

Tara, feel free to get some miniony strikes in on Zev, I give you permission to do some godmoding (Eru help me). That ought to be suitably dangerous and I'll get up a response to whatever you throw at me sometime this week. XD

@Pele Alarion If you're a Ranger, you can get a room, of course! We don't really have a barracks master or anything, I think - the OP mentions there IS one, but not who. We could re-adopt Lieutenant Brian if people want to keep him? The OP doesn't specifically mention him, though, so it's up for grabs!

And, okay, looking at the Ranger Commons OP, there are a few things that need tweaking. A lot of mentions of 'soldiers', which isn't right anymore, and in the ranks structure 'Captain' is set underneath 'Lieutenant' while it just needs to go.

If you ask @Burnt Toast for a room here, I'm sure he'll update the Commons OP to reflect it!

Hey, everyone! I was just thinking we could use an official Ranger Roster, yeah? Not just with the info the LT wanted in the RPG, but the whole shebang!

Therefore, I'm interesting in the following information for each Ranger:

Name:
Armor:
Weapons:
Primary specialization, if any:
Secondary specializations, if any:

MORE INFO:

Name: full name

Armor: full description of their standard armor

Weapons: All weapons they would regularly carry as their standard equipment

Primary Specialization, if any + Secondary specializations, if any:

By "specialization", I mean "being extraordinarily good/excellent" at something. So, being an actual expert. Not just "being better than most".

Contrast and compare the following example:
Thûllir is an expert bowman = specialization. After years of training with the sword, he is also a very good swordsman. However, he is not yet an expert swordsman. Therefore, the sword is not a specialization for him, even though he has gotten very good with a blade over time.

Most Rangers will only have one actual specialization for now, or might even still be working on obtaining their first specialization. You don't need to be an expert at one specific skill to already be a skilled, well-rounded Ranger. If your character is not quite yet an expert in their chosen first specialization, then please put for ex. a dash.

As of now, no Ranger has an official specialization (formalized by rank), even though they might have already obtained one (or more) actual specializations.

Let's return to Thûllir as an example. He has listed healing and scouting as two "advanced" skills. From what I know of his character, it is perfectly believable and fitting for scouting to be another skill he is an expert at. Therefore, Thûllir might have two specializations as it is: the Bow, and Scouting.
Then he will have to choose between the two for his Primary Specialization. If his primary specialization is formalized in rank, he will be promoted to either Tirdinen (if he chooses Scouting as his primary) or "Cuner" (if he chooses the Bow as his primary).

***

Available PRIMARY specializations:
- bow
- spear (also covers polearms for ex.)
- axe (also covers mace for ex.)
- sword (also covers knives for ex.)
- scouting
- healing
- weapons and/or armor crafting
- logistics

Available SECONDARY specializations:
- all of the primary specs can also be secondary specs
+
- unarmed combat
- mounted combat
- throwing weapons
- ... (talk to me if you wonder what you have in mind would count as a separate specialization)

Name: Pele Alarion

Weapons: longsword, dagger, recurve bow
Primary specialization, if any: healing
Secondary specializations, if any: sword

@Pele Alarion Yeah! I can update the OP to reflect your room. You can even request whatever you want since you're the first. XD Well, minus the officer quarters at the moment, I suppose.

Of all the characters I have created since coming back here, Hirluin is the one I am actually struggling with the most. When I started playing him, I had a very clear idea of what I wanted him to be like. But right from the word 'go' he hasn't behaved! He constantly stirs my writing towards the ridiculous. I can't help but poke fun at him, and he's turning out to be quite the man who takes himself so seriously that everyone else around him does exactly the opposite! (At least, those who know him...) In other words, I have no clue what Hirluin is like... :googly: So, @Arnyn I need a little more time into the RPG to figure Hirluin out, and then maybe I could fill in this detailed form?

@Allafyrefleorhtlig The above might help you a bit in fleshing out Lanneth, if you like.

@Nen Sounds good to me :) Figuring him out through RP is probbaly the most fun. But when it comes to weapons and armor it's also more a preference of what you like to write, maybe? Sword, axe, bow - all different kinds of battle writing... And the armor would at least in part coincide with his preferred main weapon. Good luck figuring him out!

I have also been enjoying people's battle posts immensely. XD
Get em in while you can, updating soon! Then Chapter Two will begin!

Name: Arnyn Dealedwen
Armor: All black armor: Reinforced leather jerkin (with steal plates inserted between two layers of leather to protect vulnerable organs), carrying the emblem of The White Tree, with detachable (and blackened) mail sleeves, worn over a linnen shirt. Lamellar, hard leather pauldrons. Fingerless, leather gloves, with matching leather bracers. Tall, supple leather boots, with reinforced leather greaves on top. Long black cloak with hood and silver clasp.
Weapons: Gondorian crafted hand-and-a-half sword with a ruby incrusted on both sides of the hilt, possible to wield one- and two-handed (weapons belt). Short bow with a quiver of 35 arrows (back). Dagger (boot/greaves). Two throwing knives (weapons belt).
Primary specialization: Sword
Secondary specializations: Unarmed Combat, Scouting

Name: Kaylin Maethyr
Armor: Light plate cuirass with a lamellar plate tasset belt, worn over a layer of brown/black cloth (and optionally leather). Plate pauldrons and matching bracers + couters. Armored gloves. Brown, hard leather boots. Plate greaves and poleyns.
Weapons: Shortsword and shield (worn on her back), two long knives (worn at her weapons belt), a set of 6 throwing knives (worn on a leg strap, also attached with a strap to her weapons belt to keep it from sliding down), and a few smaller knives (hidden about her person)
Primary specialization: Sword
Secondary specializations: Unarmed combat, Throwing weapons

So... I have a thing for swordswomen who are also skilled at unarmed combat. :D Still funny how Arnyn is clearly the ranger and Kaylin is clearly the soldier. :fence:

Weapons: short sword, parrying dagger, and a brace of throwing knives
Primary specialization, if any: scouting
Secondary specializations, if any: swordsman (hand-to-hand combat)

Part 1 of 2 posted up in the RPG. Because I dearly wanted to manage some violence before Ilisys is rendered incapable of such, and I missed a lot by dragging heels so this is 'catchup'. Also I am tired of trying to edit the entire thing down into one post. The first part; my Ranger gets to play, in the second part, she will absolutely pay. Apologies if it is too gory/long. I am used to writing AoA combat with NPCs. :embarrassed:

Ercassie Edit - And the second part is now also posted up. The previously aforementioned apologies remain in effect. :googly: I should also point out that the crossbow bolt which took out one of the two NPC'd Orcs in my last post could have either been the only worthwhile contribution of Unalmis to this entire skirmish (from offscreen) or else the amazing good fortune of that crossbow bolt that Kaylin saw capably away from targeting Hirluin in an earlier post by @Arnyn. I leave it entirely up to the GM to decide.

@Karis Ziranphel, @Almarëa Mordollwen, @Silmarë, @Frostbite : Just an FYI about timing: I'll be posting my update and wrap up of Chapter One either late this evening/night or tomorrow late morning (BST+1).

I am so glad you guys were good with the gore ! :grouphug: The length is something I still may have to work on, perhaps even by trying several small posts rather than just one long stand-alone admission. Regardless, because the deadline was extended, something rather long but not at all gory (I didn't assume any outcomes) has been flung into the thread. Practice helps, or there so is the motive.

Weapons: Quarterstaff with steel tips. Dirk.
Primary Specialization: Weapon and armor crafting (Intentionally thinking a jack-of-all-trades at this point, due to his background on the frontier. Can narrow it down if needed)
Secondary Specialization: Polearms (Proficient with quarterstaff, relies on strength and stamina to leverage its reach more than skill or finesse)

Arnyn, deepest apologies for the B2B (back to back) post. I'm just trying to get my head around the time line since Udan last swung his axe for Gondor! What do you think (and I will go by your judgement) 1, 2 , 3 years?

Re: Ranger Headquarters (OOC)

Posted: Mon Aug 10, 2020 10:55 am
by Arnyn
No worries, Udan, the atmosphere is a bit more relaxed!

Honestly, timelines are going to be messed up anyway... Everyone is sort of making their own choices. There are people with fourth age MT characters who are pretending that many years have passed, there are people pretending about two years have passed (me with Arnyn) since she left the ERC, while the ERC was set in a later FA timeline than we are playing in now (Fourth Age 2-5 ish)... :googly: So whatever you do, it won't make complete sense...

So I would say: don't get hung up on specifics, just think of something that works for you, and everyone has agreed that we either won't get into specifics in character, OR if we do, that we will just go with the flow and ignore what doesn't really add up.
