Hello everyone.

I just starting watching a brand-new series on Netflix, the entertainment streaming service, based on a video game I used to play - called Dragon's Dogma. I also watched an interesting horror-type film and novel-adaptation called I'm Thinking of Ending Things last week.

There are several series and movies that I have yet to get around to watching and I would love to know what my fellow Plaza members have watched on there.

Any shows or films that you would recommend?

I'm still debating whether or not to keep Netflix (I'll explain why on our Discord chat, Sur) but I still have it at present. These are som of the shows and movies I watch on the streaming service (there's plenty more I still need to see though:

The Office
Supernatural
Gotham
Sherlock
Merlin
Mary and the Witch's Flower
Hell on Wheels
The Magicians
When Calls the Heart (Probably not going to finish this because of the lov triangle in season two, the ultimate fate of Jack, and what happened to the actress Lori Loughlin)
Arrow
The 100
The Worst Witch
Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance
The Witcher

I also have Hulu with the HBO app, Starz, and Disney Plus.

my all time most streamed show is "The West Wing" which is still very valid despite being almost 15 years old. Its the one show i can listen to while working, especially since 90% of the show is in an office, there isn't much to watch action-sequence-wise.

I keep the big five streaming services (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Disney+ and Apple+) and either alone or with my cable package i get HBOMax, Showtime, Starz, and Epix

I mostly keep them all for the promise of original material - Netflix comes out with tons of it, but Amazon prime is promising the new LotR series, and Apple+ is promising Foundation, and Disney+ is the home of all of marvel, star wars, and disney/pixar. I've loved HBO shows since I was a kid, and Starz has the White Queen/White Princess/Spanish Princess series as well as American Gods and Outlander.

The series that got me to sign up in the first place (thank goodness they sell Netflix gift cards) is called Camp Cretaceous about a group of teens attending an adventure camp on the other side of Isla Nublar that have to band together to survive when dinsaurs wreak havoc on the island (which basically means when the Indominus Rex breaks loose, since it's set during the events of the first Jurassic World movie). I quite enjoyed the Lego Jurassic World series entitled: The Legend of Isla Nublar, so I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy this (I'm the type of person who accepts things as they are instead of tearing them to bits, which is probably why there are very few TV shows and movies that I actually dislike. Are there things I don't like about them? Sure, but I don't dwell on those, and try to focus on the positives rather than the negatives, or else I wouldn't like them very much either). It begins tomorrow and has about eight half-an-hour episodes (I set a reminder on my phone).

And Aigronding Mordagnir, I can't stream Supernatural on Netflix in my neck of the woods, so I'm streaming it from the beginning on Amazon Prime. I'm almost finished with Season 11 (I've never actually seen it from the beginning, I've only been watching it since Season 11 or so. The rest of Season 15 will air on the CW starting Thursday, October 8th). :headbang:

I LOVE Outlander, The White Queen, and The White Princess, @corlisswyn !! I still need to see The Spanish Princess and to read all those books (I'm a few hundred pages into the first Outlander novel though).

I'm way behind on Supernatural, @Lady of Shadow ! I'm on season five... . Just past the part when the Winchesters discover that SPOILER the Trickster is Gabriel END SPOILER...

@Aigronding Mordagnir the first outlander book really pissed me off, but the series was better at handling what annoyed the crud out of me.

The White Queen is one of those series I can just put on while doing other things and just LOVE it. And by the time Henry VIII comes to power, my 14th great grandfather joins his court as legal counsel, so when I see shows during that time, I get to see Gramps (he was in the Tudors and Wolf Hall)

@Aigronding Mordagnir In my opinion, Supernatural starts to go downhill after Season 5, mostly because I think it was originally planned to end with Season 5, but then the popularity of the show kept it going. I finally stopped watching somewhere around Season 11 or 12, though I do plan to watch the final episode whenever it airs simply because it's the final episode and I want to know how the show as an entirety ends.

As for what I tend to watch, TV hasn't happened much over the past few months (mostly thanks to this lovely space coming back!). A few shows on Netflix I enjoy:

Arrow
Flash
Legends of Tomorrow
Supergirl
Black Lightning
Sherlock
Series of Unfortunate Events
The Crown
Agents of SHIELD
Broadchurch

@corlisswyn , what irked you in the book? Is this about SPOILER Claire's Loch Ness encounter END SPOILER? Wolf Hall is on my list.

@Dimcairien Luiniel , most people tell me the same thing, that the show has been forced to continue for too long. What bothers me is how loosely they use the Bible as means for the plot...I can be impressed by that in some ways, like with Narnia, but Supernatural does some crazy things with Scripture. I rather they would have just stuck to supernatural creatures from the mythologies of the world but I do love the Winchester Boys and Castiel so I'll most likely finish it but not in a hurry. I need to watch Series of Unfortunate Events (should I read the books first?).

@Aigronding Mordagnir Supernatural gets way worse in regards to using Scripture as a means for plot. I didn't mind the Lucifer arc too much (mostly cause it was good storytelling), but I'll just say "god's sister' and leave it at that, which was the main reason I stopped watching.

As for Series of Unfortunate Events, I haven't read the books in at least 12 years. It helped having a few vague ideas of where the plot was going, but it's a well-done show and you should be able to follow without intimate knowledge of the books. It has a unique sense of humour that at times qualifies as dark humour and at other times is just weird, but I think you'll enjoy it. Neil Patrick Harris makes for one excellent villain.

I thought Supernatural lost it at the end of S2, tbh. But the boys were pretty so I stuck around until S4. I likewise enjoyed S1 of The Good Place, but subsequent seasons are ... reaching.

A series of unfortunate events is EXCELLENT. I even like the ending better than the books'.

I definitely concur with the Merlin recommendations. Good series and great special guest actors. Guest appearance by Charles Dance was probably my favorite episode and introduced me prior to playing Tywin.

The other one (I'm in the process of watching)...The Frankenstein Chronicles. Follows Sean Bean playing an inspector and inspired by Mary Shelley's classic. Unfortunately it's 2 short seasons and Covid kind of put it on stand still, keeping fingers crossed Netflix picks up another season.

@Aigronding Mordagnir I think I know exactly what it is you are referring to when you say you are considering canceling your subscription. I have weighed this controversial matter in my own mind as well.

I also enjoyed The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance and I am very much hoping that Netflix will renew this series for a second season. I have yet to watch Mary and the Witch’s Flower and When Calls the Heart but I certainly plan to in the future. Have you by chance seen any episodes of the series Cobra Kai? It's the follow-up series to the Karate Kid movies and it's awesome. I binge-watched the entire first two seasons in a matter of days and couldn't be happier with the announcement of an upcoming third season.

@corlisswyn The West Wing sounds like a series my mother would enjoy. I think I’m going to recommend this show to her and I may even watch it myself.

@Lady of Shadow How have I not heard of Camp Cretaceous?! I have watched every Jurassic Park film at least several times and was never even aware of this series.

So I finished watching Dragon’s Dogma yesterday, and while it was much better than I expected, the ending was poorly executed and quite unsatisfying. Oh well.

I heard that Netflix in Canada has all three movies of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. If this is true, I envy you guys. *pouts*

Camp Cretaceous is actually quite good. I watched it twice yesterday (once on my phone, and once on my laptop. It looked better on the latter, since bigger screen and all). Don't believe the rumors that the reason some people aren't giving it a chance is they think it's just for kids (it's dark enough for adults to enjoy, but not too dark) or that nobody gets eaten, since it is a Jurassic Park/World themed show (even if it is aimed at children, or more accurately, the child in all of us). There's a good chance there will be a second season (which may get released along with the final movie in the Jurassic World trilogy, even though I'm not big on the dinosaurs on the mainland plot idea, but that doesn't mean I won't go see it). I've already bought a 24 x 36 fabric poster (which I'll also have to buy a frame for).

I haven't read the books but I enjoyed watching A Series of Unfortunate Events. Anyone see the unfortunate movie? I saw it back in 2005 but I think the tv-show is so much better than the movie. I liked Neil Patrick Harris Count Olaf better than Jim Careys.

I haven't seen Cursed but I love shows and movies (Merlin, both the show and both the movies with Sam Neill and the show Camelot) based on the arthurian legends so I hope this one is good too.

Lucifer
New Legends of Monkey
Cursed
Once Upon A Time
Chesapeake Shores
Heartland
Charmed (Original not the remake)

@Rior Laegiel that movie is on the ... questionable list of adaptions that have been loudly criticized by the original author. There was even some production issue, I think, where Daniel Harris (Penname Lemony Snicket) was sort of pushed out of the development process.

Is Lucifer good? I've been meaning to give it a watch.

@Androthelm Lucifer is one of my favourite shows. But I had to watch it twice to find that out. The first time I turned off after just a few minutes dismissing it as somthing that was not for me but after a while I decided to give it another try and watch the whole first episode. After that I was hooked and binged the first three seasons.

@Androthelm Lucifer is excellent. Like @Rior Laegiel it's one I probably would have brushed off as 'not for me' initially, but I had several friends highly recommend it.

For those of you who love documentaries, especially Sir David Attenborough documentaries, his new one A Life on Our Planet is on Netflix (it's a Netflix Original if I'm not mistaken) and it's brilliant! My mum and I watched it last night and it was incredibly emotional and kind of melancholic, but beautifully uplifting. Very Sir David. <3

We also watched My Octopuss Teacher - it was gorgeous, and the story was so moving! I recommend that one too. Oh, I now saw they have Dancing with the Birds, about the maiting rituals of birds of paradise! I have to check that out!

Sounds like something for @Menolly, @Nessa Saelind.

I'm looking forward to seeing The One coming out next month. Sad they lost Hannibal though, always liked a rewatch. Now have to get my dvds out to do so ...

Thanks for the tag @Lirimaer! I haven't seen the Attenborough special yet because I need to hydrate beforehand for all the anticipated crying. I also need to watch My Octopus Teacher, it looks great. Dancing with the Birds was mesmerizing! I feel like there wasn't much documentary substance to it, but the video footage of the birds dancing was very cool.

On a different documentary topic, has anyone seen the Netflix original series Street Food? There have been two collections, one set in Asia and one set in Latin America, and while I typically don't love cooking shows, these were so well done and compelling. There's also a similar series called Taco Chronicles that's about different kinds of tacos mostly in Mexico. The narration is done like the taco is talking and it's a little goofy, but very entertaining.

Oh oh oh - I would like to second the recommendation for David Attenborough's latest documentary!

It's devastating, deeply moving, and fascinatingly informative in equal measure, and showcases with utter class the beauty of our world (I realise all of these things go without saying for a David Attenborough!). For those nervous about sitting through 90 minutes of heart-wrenching upset (and it is upsetting), I don't think it's a spoiler to say that it finishes by offering reasons to have hope.

I watched a documentary on Netflix the other night called Kiss the Ground. It put forth the idea that one of the major factors of climate change that has been widely ignored so far is the eradication of the earth's topsoil and native plants due to industrialized agriculture over the last century. I've casually studied permaculture the last several years, but this documentary is the first time I've heard the term 'regenerative agriculture' and the whole concept is very interesting and very hopeful.

@Menolly - I think you summed up Dancing with the Birds perfectly! My mom and I watched it last night, it was so fun, colourfull and lighthearted :-)

I think we're going to watch Chasing Coral next.

@Resistance is Futile ooh that sounds like it should be next on my list! - not heard about any of that. One of the things I really liked about A Life On Our Planet was that as well as the climate change stuff, it also touched upon biodiversity loss (e.g. for production of palm oil), and the far reaching impacts that can have.

@Nia A Life On Our Planet is definitely one I've been eyeing. Biodiversity loss is such a huge deal that so many people are unaware of.

And Kiss the Ground is definitely one I'm going to have to watch 2-3 more times just to really process everything it brought up. So much good thinking material.

@Resistance is Futile OK, now I have to put Kiss the Ground on my (way too long) To watch list! Thanks! ^_^
